How NOT To Solve The Negev Crisis

Naomi Kahn, Director of Regavim's International Division, spoke to i24 about why creating "new communities" the same way that Abu Talul was legalized in 2006 is a bad idea.

In a comprehensive 2017 report, Regavim outlined a Plan for the Regulation of Bedouin Settlement in the Negev. This is what a sensible, practical, Zionist solution looks like.

Abu Talul: A Case in Point

Abu Talul, a Bedouin town in the Negev recognized by the State of Israel 15 years ago, still looks like an illegal squatters’ camp. Why? And what's the way forward?

Naomi Kahn, Director of Regavim's International Division, explains in the video.

So what’s the solution?

A) To utilize land resources better in already-existing Bedouin communities. It’s ridiculous that sometimes two-thirds of recognized, legal settlements are empty because of land ownership claims! Israel must solve land disputes by reducing compensation packages if people don’t settle, and by initiating ownership clarification procedures in court.

B) When necessary, to create new communities where there are no ownership claims, and where sensible, reasonable, long-term planning can be made.

Instead of rewarding illegal activity, propagating a poor quality of life, and allowing for more lawlessness and violence, the State of Israel should take responsibility, and exercise effective solutions for the regulation of Bedouin settlement in the Negev. Everyone will benefit.
