Reb Neuberger: Entering With Tallis and Tefillin

ENTERING WITH TALLIS AND TEFILLIN

Our return flight from New York was scheduled to land in Tel Aviv at 6:50 a.m. I was pleased because it meant that I would not have to put on tallis and tefillin on the plane, which is difficult at best, especially if one has to daven in the middle of the night, a few hours after takeoff.

But no! It did not work out that way. “Rabos Machashavos …. Many thoughts are in man’s heart, but only the will of Hashem prevails.” (Mishlei 19:21)

About forty-five minutes before landing, I noticed a Yid davening intensely, wearing tallis and tefillin. I looked out the window and saw that the sun had just arisen on a beautiful dawn.

Why am I not davening now?

I thought about zerizus for mitzvos. I thought about Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l, who always performed mitzvos at the earliest opportunity. I ran back to my seat, reached for my tallis  and tefillin and started to daven. There was just enough time before landing.

Granted that I was davening without a minyan, but this was one of the most powerful  tefillos I can remember. I looked at the interactive map on the screen in front of me and I realized that this was the first time in my life I had entered the Land of Israel wearing  tallis and tefillin! This was huge! This is the way to enter Israel!

At precisely the moment when the plane crossed the border into the Holy Land, I was saying the words, “Uva l’Tzion goail … a Redeemer will come to Tzion!” (Yeshiah 59:20)

Amen! Amen! Amen! May it be soon in our days!

My friends, it is time to reassess our outlook. Baruch Hashem, we have returned to the Land of Israel. Since the founding of the modern state, there have been many well-meaning political leaders, some of whom have loved the Jewish People and the Land of Israel. Some have been brilliant and some idealistic. Many dedicated Jews have contributed to the development of this State.

But there is something that we are just not understanding. And because we are not understanding this basic truth, we are in terrible trouble throughout the world. In country after country, city after city, they are attacking us. A tsunami of hatred is rolling in. When it reaches the shoreline, it will be unstoppable by all the normal, logical plans of rational mankind.

This is not a question of “bad PR.” This is a question of teshuva!

It is clear to me that, unless we enter Eretz Yisroel “wearing tallis and tefillin,” we are not going to be able to survive. There is no plan or strategy, however logical or brilliant, which can prevent us from being overwhelmed by our enemies. The haters comprise an army which cannot be counted and, this time, they are determined not to fail in their plan to make the world “Judenrein,” G-d forbid. There is only one way to stop them, and that is to develop absolute trust in the King of the Universe and to live with that trust.

The following may seem a bit controversial, but I want to tell you a story. As a teenager, I was far from Yiddishkeit, but I yearned to be on a high spiritual level. At that time, I was enamored of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. I remember listening to a recording of one of his speeches which made a huge impression on me. Here is a paraphrase: “I was sitting alone in my home in the middle of the night. I could not sleep. My wife and children were sleeping peacefully, but I sat up, thinking about all the threats against my life and the life of my family, how they would bomb my house. As I sat there alone, I suddenly realized that there is only one thing which could save me: G-d had to become real to me! Yes, that was the only way. G-d had to become real, otherwise I could not go on and we could not survive!”

My friends, we can learn from everyone, and those words of Dr. Martin Luther King still ring in my ears: “G-d had to become real to me.”

Today, as the Children of Israel face the onslaught of millions, perhaps billions, of enemies whose entire desire is to destroy us, G-d forbid, we are totally unable to stand in the path of this tsunami and say “stop!” All our brilliant schemes are nothing if G-d is not real to us!

“Al tira … Do not fear sudden terror or the holocaust of the wicked when it comes … for G-d is with us. Even until your old age I will endure … and rescue!” (Tefillah)

We have to enter the Land of Israel with tallis and tefillin.

We have only one Friend in the world. “Hu Elokainu! Hu Avinu! Hu Malkainu.” He is the King and nothing can stand in His way. In Parshas Bamidbar a beautiful picture is presented of Am Yisroel standing in its holy formations around the Mishkan. My friends, our eyes have to be directed toward our Father in Heaven. He will save us, but we have to discard the empty designs of man and give total allegiance to the Torah which was revealed to us on Har Sinai.

The association of Aharon, and of all later High Priests of Israel, with the task of the daily lighting of the menorah/candelabra in the Temple is significant. In our current technologically advanced era, turning on the lights in a home or a room is hardly considered to be a difficult or especially meaningful event. The flick of a switch floods the area with light and illumination.

However, when light is sourced from candles, wicks and oil it is a more complicated matter. To produce this type of light requires a modicum of motor skills, patience and great attention to detail. Many problems, even fatalities, may be caused by improperly lighting the candelabra such as the one in the Temple, with its imposing size and dimension.

Because of the care and attention that was needed to light the candelabra in the Temple, and to emphasize the holy nature of the task and of the candelabra itself, caring for it and kindling it was assigned to the highest priest of Israel, Aharon. He and his successors symbolized light. They represented hope, optimism, holiness, purpose and peace. This physical representation of Aharon’s general role in Jewish society served to remind all of the purpose of the Temple, its laws and rituals and infused the Godly spirit into Jewish society generally.

The Torah characterizes itself as light and radiance. The commandments are the candles and the kindling, and the Torah – its study and its observance – becomes the source of light itself for all generations of Jews. It became the personal task of each and every High Priest of Israel to see to it that this light was kept eternally burning and refreshed daily.

It is interesting to note that the light of the menorah was not seen generally by the public, as not everyone had access to the area of the Temple where the menorah stood. But, it was seen daily by the High Priest himself and the radiance emanating from the menorah inspired him to be the constant disseminator of light, Torah, social justice and tranquility within Jewish society.

This essential societal task naturally entailed the same type of precision, persistence and attention to detail, coupled with loving care and innate skills that was present when the High Priest serviced the physical lighting of the menorah in the Temple daily. The Talmud teaches us that the clothing of the High Priest was not to be soiled when he appeared in public view. Lighting the menorah can be a dirty job if one is not careful, as can any societal activity, no matter how well intentioned it may have been at the outset.

The process and commandment of lighting the menorah served as a constant reminder to the High Priest of the important role that he was to always play in the furtherance of Torah and holiness in Jewish society.

Shalom Pollack – Joshua's altar tour 6/16

 TUESDAY JUNE 16

Return to ancient roots and current blossoms 🌷🥀💐🌹🪻

The great return is underway, BH!

In a protected bus and with full military coordination and escort, we will scale biblical Mount Eval and behold the altar that  Joshua built upon entering the  Land, overlooking biblical  Shechem.

Here, the twelve tribes reaffirmed their allegiance to God and Torah on Mount Gerizim and Mt Eval

The site was discovered in the 1980's by Professor Zertel, but until recently, it has not seen many Jewish visitors due to security concerns  (the  Oslo Accords).
Recently,  efforts have been made to encourage Jewish visitors

There are plans to build a major museum around this unique biblical site,  a must-see site for millions of visitors.

Hopefully,  future VIPs will be brought there rather than whisked off to "Yad Vashem" where they are told we returned to our homeland because of anti-Semitism.
Joshua will provide the original and correct understanding as to why we returned to our land and why we will never leave again.

We will have a specially chosen English-speaking guide from the local Shomron field school.

In 2005, the area of biblical Israel, the northern Shomron, was declared "Judenrein"  by the Israeli government when they razed four Jewish villages and expelled the populations.

The  Northern Shomron, home to flourishing Jewish villages and few Arab neighbors, met the same sad fate as the larger Jewish settlement area in Gaza.
Prime Minister Sharon never explained why he  "threw it in " along with Gaza as yet another gift to our enemies, but he was determined.

Chomesh saw the first heart-wrenching destruction and expulsion in 2005.
They were the first Jews to return last year, and once again, a thriving community

Our group had the honor of being one of the first visitors to celebrate the restoration of the pioneers to their village.
It is an experience not to be forgotten

Recently, its neighbor up the road is welcoming its people back, too.
The ruins of Sanur are being rebuilt by the same enthusiastic pioneers who never stopped dreaming of a return.

We will, please God, be the first English-speaking group to visit these special Jews and celebrate with them in the midst of the rebuilding.

(Hopefully, we will do the same for the remaining two)

The connection between Joshua's entry into the promised land to reaffirm the covenant and today's pioneers in the same area is clear and breathtaking.

We will meet at the Inbal hotel at 9:00. Return approx 6:00
320 shekels
Bring lunch

Limited seating.

🫵 Facing the Hate Campaign: Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Schlesinger Goes Above and Beyond in a Public Stat...

Maran Rosh Yeshiva "Kol Torah" and member of the Council of Torah Elders, Germi Schlesinger Shlita, speaks out against the draft decree, and supports the rabbinical emissaries, representatives of Degel HaTorah, who are working to regulate the postponement law: "In politics, what they are doing is very serious. But it is obligatory, there is a mitzvah to regulate it. Just shouting does not bring about a solution. In our community, there are avrechims, there are those who, if they are not taken care of, do not know what will happen. I have already heard some bad things about this. According to the words of Maran Rosh Yeshiva Germi Schlesinger Shlita, a number of essential points can be made that emphasize the importance of an informed and practical approach to the issue of the postponement law: 1. The obligation to bring about a "solution" and not just a protest The Rosh Yeshiva emphasizes that "just shouting does not bring about a solution." In Judaism, and in particular in the leadership of the Torah world, the goal is always the final result - preserving the ability of Torah students to continue in their studies without interruption. Shouting and protests that are not accompanied by a practical plan or dialogue may do more harm than good, since they do not solve the essential problem with the state authorities. 2. "There is a mitzvah to sort it out" This is a firm statement that the regulation of the status of yeshiva students is not just a political or technical matter, but a religious obligation and mitzvah. The responsibility of the public leadership is to ensure that every young man and woman can sit and study in peace. The aspiration for a regulated postponement law stems from the need to protect the "ark of comfort" of the generation - the holy yeshivahs. 3. Concern for the individual and prevention of "spoilings" The Grami Schlesinger points to a real spiritual danger: Protection of the weak: Within the public, there are those who need a supportive and regulated framework. Without a clear law, those individuals may find themselves in situations of uncertainty that lead to spiritual retreat. Preventing long-term damage: The yeshiva head notes that "malfunctions" have already been seen as a result of the lack of regulation. When there is no law, the pressure and confusion seep in and harm the quality of learning and the stability of the Torah world. 4. A matter-of-fact approach versus a populist approach While there are extremist elements who choose the path of loud opposition without solutions, the approach presented here is one of public responsibility. Politics can indeed be "very serious," but precisely for this reason, shrewdness and decisive action are required to achieve an arrangement that will ensure the continued existence of the Torah world for generations. In conclusion: The importance of the postponement law is not only on the legal level, but also as a necessary tool for preserving the spirituality of all yeshiva students and preventing dropouts or harm to those who need the protection of the Torah system. Lamdeini Event Strengthens the Next Generation of Lomdei Torah

A powerful evening of inspiration and chizuk was recently held for the talmidim and families of Lamdeini, bringing together leading gedolei Yisroelto strengthen the next generation in the importance and sweetness of limud Gemara.

Nearly 150 talmidim and fathers gathered for the organization’s annual event, which focused on encouraging children to develop a lasting connection to Torah and Gemara learning. The program was arranged by Lamdeini, an organization dedicated to helping talmidim succeed in learning through personalized guidance and one-on-one support from specially trained avreichim. Working together with the mosdos Torah across the country, the organization has become a valuable source of encouragement and direction for many children navigating the challenges of learning.

The evening opened with an engaging educational program and special Avos u’Bonim learning session, as the kol HaTorah filled the room with warmth and excitement. The talmidim participated enthusiastically in interactive activities centered around Gemara and Chag HaShavuos, creating an atmosphere of genuine ahavas HaTorah.

A highlight of the evening was the arrival of the Gedolei Yisroel, including:

The Gedolim addressed the gathering with heartfelt words about the greatness of Torah learning and the responsibility to pass the mesorah on to the next generation. Maran HaMashgiach, shlita, spoke passionately about the eternal value of Torah and praised the tremendous work being done to help talmidim connect to learning. Rav Yitzchok Kolodetsky, shlita, emphasized that true happiness and fulfillment can only come through dedication to Torah.

One of the most emotional moments of the evening came during the recitation of Pirkei Tehillim, led by Rav Yitzchak Berkovits, shlita, followed by the moving amiras Tefillas HaShlah. The atmosphere reached another level during the heartfelt Kabbalas Ol Malchus Shamayim led by Maran HaMashgiach, shlita, with the entire crowd responding together with deep emotion.

The Rishon LeTzion, Rav Dovid Yosef, shlita, encouraged the tzibbur to remain steadfast in strengthening Torah learning and transmitting its values to future generations, while expressing gratitude to the Ribbono Shel Olam for the gift of Toras Emes.

The event’s impact remains deeply felt by the talmidim and parents, many of whom left inspired and uplifted by the warmth, encouragement, and powerful messages shared throughout the evening.

Illegal Arrest…..subterfuge?

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A yeshiva student, considered one of the prominent students at Yeshivat Darchei Ish in Moshav Tirosh was arrested Tuesday night in what was described as a planned police ambush.

The student, Meir Sabag, encountered a surprise checkpoint around 2 a.m. that had been set up by the civilian police on the road between Beit Shemesh and Moshav Tirosh.

Sabag, who was returning to the yeshiva after visiting his parents to help them, reportedly that he had no suspicion that the routine trip would turn into what the article describes as a nightmare. The vehicle he was traveling in was stopped for a document check, and when police entered Sabag’s details into their system, officers discovered that he was listed as a draft evader. His travel companion, whose information was also checked, was released after the system showed his status was  legally arranged.

According to testimonies from the scene, the forces allegedly used deliberate deception to prevent escalation or calls for assistance. Police reportedly calmed the students and claimed that the military police who had been summoned to the scene did not intend to make an arrest, but only to deliver an official summons to the military recruitment office. Because of this alleged misleading information, the students did not rush to contact emergency support networks.

Within about fifteen minutes, an unmarked vehicle reportedly arrived, from which three plainclothes detectives and a soldier emerged. They handcuffed the student, placed him in the vehicle, and quickly drove away.

Sources connected to the yeshiva issued an urgent warning to yeshiva students and avreichim: “Do not be naïve, the system is operating in every possible way.”

The incident comes amid reports that the Israel Police refused to allocate thousands of police officers and Border Police personnel for a broad arrest operation targeting yeshiva students in charedi cities. According to the report, the military police requested major manpower assistance from the Israel Police for a proactive operation, but the request was denied.

At the same time, the Ministry of Construction and Housing has reportedly begun implementing automatic computerized synchronization with the IDF Human Resources Directorate databases. Under the system, any citizen defined by the military system as obligated for enlistment who has not arranged his legal status will immediately lose eligibility to participate in government housing programs

Is Israel Finally Waking Up to Who the Real Enemy Is?

In this deeply personal and important discussion, Avi Abelow shares his experiences speaking with young secular and left-wing Israelis across the country, and why these conversations leave him both hopeful and deeply concerned about the future battle for Israel’s identity.

After October 7, many Israelis expected the country to unite around the reality of the jihadist threat facing the Jewish people. Yet Avi explains how parts of Israel’s media, academia, schools, and cultural institutions continue shaping young Israelis to feel more discomfort toward religious Jews, settlers, and Jewish nationalism than toward Hamas, radical Islam, and the enemies openly calling for Israel’s destruction.

This video explores: the growing divide inside Israeli society, the influence of Israel’s secular elite, media indoctrination and education, the battle over Jewish identity, Judea and Samaria, the post-October 7 awakening, and how many young Israelis are beginning to reconnect to Jewish pride, Zionism, Torah, nationalism, and Israel’s Biblical destiny.

Avi Abelow explains why these conversations matter so much, why dialogue between different types of Israelis is critical, and why he remains optimistic despite the polarization, protests, media hysteria, and political division dominating Israel today. Most importantly, this video highlights the powerful Jewish awakening happening among Israel’s younger generation — a generation increasingly reconnecting to Jewish identity, Jewish history, the Land of Israel, military service, faith, resilience, and national purpose. Watch this important conversation about Israel, Zionism, October 7, Israeli society, the Israeli left, Jewish identity, Judea and Samaria, media bias, secularism, nationalism, Jewish awakening, and the future of the Jewish state.
