HEATWAVE GETS TO GALLANT … before moving eastward

"Whoever is merciful on the cruel, in the end is cruel on the merciful."

DM Gallant Orders Administrative Detention of 3 More Jews

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant (Likud) on Monday signed three administrative detention warrants against Jewish youths, Hakol Hayehudi reported. This brings the number of Jewish administrative detainees to a record number of eight concurrently. A total of 12 Jews were arrested since the establishment of the latest Netanyahu government in January, surpassing the record set under Rabin’s Oslo government after the 1994 Baruch Goldstein killings of Arabs in the Cave of the Patriarchs.

The orders were signed for periods of three, four, and six months. One of the detainees was arrested two weeks before his wedding. Another detainee is a soldier on pre-discharge leave. A third detainee is an honorably discharged soldier who is the grandson of Rabbi Zvi Tau, head of the Har Hamor yeshiva.

The Honnu legal aid society reported that two of the detainees were released by the court two weeks ago after the court had rejected the police’s request to extend their detention and determined that they must be released. The three were detained once again on Monday morning for interrogation, and then Gallant signed their administrative detention.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention focuses on the determination of whether detention is arbitrary or not, which is murky in cases of administrative detention, as opposed to criminal arrests. The group has proposed guidelines to help such determination, suggesting that any deprivations of liberty that violate the freedom of association must be deemed arbitrary. Based on these guidelines, the group has condemned countries that have used long-term administrative detention when the detainees were held for the mere fact of belonging to an “illegal organization.”

Essentially, this means that arrests based on testimony by Shin Bet agents who were present in a gathering of a suspected group where the detainee was present is illegal on its face and may constitute a violation of international law.

MEANWHILE HUNDREDS OF ARRESTS NO *CONVICTIONS

Anti-government protesters attempt to disrupt train operations, block roads, cause accidents and perform their rituals disturbing the greater Israeli public.

The anti-government protests on Tuesday morning began with what the protest leaders are calling "a national day of opposition."

Instead of blocking highways and Ben Gurion International Airport, as they did last week, Tuesday's protests will focus on five central train stations: Haifa Merkaz Hashmonah, Binyamina, Herzliya, Tel Aviv Hashalom, and Lod.

The protests began on Rothschild Boulevard, with a few dozen protesters who arrived at Habimah Square. From there the protesters went to block one of the entrances to the Kirya base in Tel Aviv, and pushed into the securities stock market to hold a protest there as well.

At the same time, protesters blocked Route 2 for a short time, near Ma'agan Michael and the Nahalal Junction.

The headquarters for the "hi-tech protests" announced a "National Day of Disruption in the Digital Sphere," but did not explain exactly what this entailed. "In the times of emergency we find ourselves in now, the protest needs to be felt in the digital sphere as well," they explained.

Israel Police have prepared for the protests, and thousands of police offices have been posted around Israel. As per instructions from Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, the police officers will allow protests, while enforcing the freedom of movement for civilians. Israel Police have also clarified that they will not allow the train movement to be halted, and if there is such an attempt, the officers will act to allow the trains to operate as usual.

According to Israel Hayom, supporters of the judicial reform will hold a counter-protest, "a journey to put the brakes and to block kibbutzes and towns in which the 'princes of democracy' live.”

In an announcement, the group said, "We will go out on a country-wide journey to halt this. What does that mean in practice? We - the people of the nation, will go out in all our glory towards the gates of the kibbutzes and the towns were the 'princes of democracy' live - and we will prevent them, in practice, from 'disrupting' the State of Israel."

The protests are expected to take place during the morning, and again between the hours of 4:00p.m. and 6:00p.m., in various locations across Israel.

"Last week, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara was summoned to a stormy session of PM Netanyahu’s cabinet, where she was questioned on the accusation that Israel Police employ selective enforcement in demonstrations – harsh and even violent against Haredi, Ethiopian, settler, and Arab protesters, soft and inclusive when the highways are blocked by leftist, largely Ashkenazi Jews. The meeting was called by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who believed the AG should explain to the public why the enforcement is not uniform and how the decisions are made regarding different protests.

Maybe its time to “sack the AG”! who also suffers from "disproportionate discernment”?
