What is a Political Revolution?
The definition of political revolution is a movement within a country to reform the structure of a country based on political justifications. Political revolutions have significant effects on the nation in which they occur, but they also have been significant aspects of world history. They are not always successful, but they are always symbolic of movements within a country that will not easily go away, even if they are not legitimized by a new government structure.
The main purpose of a political revolution is to drastically recreate the government of a nation to a form that will easily create desired policies. They can be connected to economic, religious, or social movements within a nation as well. Notable political revolutions include the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, and the Chinese Revolution of 1917.
The main characteristics of political revolutions include:
- Liberal influences pervade the entire revolution.
- Revolutions are fought against rulers or government officials, and they often end in the death of these individuals.
- Revolution typically begins among the common people, the lower classes of society.
- Revolutions are usually violent in nature.
How do Revolutions Start?
There are many different contexts in which revolutions have occurred. Still, all revolutions have similar characteristics and phases. One of the most characteristic factors at the beginning of revolutions is public unrest. In political revolutions, public unrest is felt toward legislators or others who have major impacts on a country's policies. For instance, the Bolshevik revolution around the beginning of the twentieth century was an anti-monarchist revolution. In addition to seeing the monarchy as a symbol of oppression, the communist Bolsheviks were dissatisfied with the policies of the government of Tsar Nicholas II.
The American Revolution in the British North American colonies, which resulted in their independence from Great Britain, was instigated by the dissatisfaction of the colonists with what they viewed as oppressive policies. When these policies were strengthened and added to, the anger resulted in physical manifestations such as the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre. Eventually, tensions exploded in the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775.
The beginning of the French Revolution has similar elements, but the physical distance between oppressor and oppressed was much smaller. This resulted in much more violent uprisings and demonstrations. The royalty and nobility of France had long been fiscally irresponsible, and the burden of these decisions often fell upon the poor citizens. Eventually, the people rose up and established their own form of government known as the National Assembly. This form of government would change throughout the revolution. In one of its incarnations, the National Convention, it arrested Louis XVI and beheaded him in public using the guillotine.
Types of Revolution
There are many different types of revolutions, and these can be separated into different categories indicated by the typologies of various scholars.
- Revolution according to Marx
- Marx believed that the most effective revolution was that waged by the proletariat working class against the bourgeoisie factory owners who were oppressing them. Only through a political revolution that resulted in labor reform could workers gain what was rightfully theirs. Maintenance of these rights required the establishment of a communist government.
- Revolution according to Tocqueville
- Tocqueville's theory of the origins of revolution is essentially the exact opposite of Marx's theory. He states that when the situation of the general populace has improved, they become apathetic. This allows incendiary forces, such as the liberal politicians whom Tocqueville feared, to pass liberal policies such as welfare and influence individuals to become increasingly dissatisfied with the current government. When these policies were not passed easily, the populace become angry, demand the policies, and foment into a revolution. Thus, a new government is created.
- Revolution according to Tilly
- Charles Tilly advocated a theory of revolution in which revolutions were primarily used as tools of a society that viewed an election or transfer of power as being illegitimate. These revolutions did not involve different ''levels'' of society, but two factions that were fighting each other. An example that supports this theory is the Chinese Communist Revolution of 1949. Tilly himself noted that the Russian Revolution could be interpreted through this theory, viewing the Bolsheviks as one political group and the Monarchists or Imperialists as the other. Under this theory, revolutions do not have to be lengthy (although they often are). Any dramatic shift in power, even if it was bloodless or strifeless, could be viewed as a revolution.
- Revolution according to Katz
- Katz connects macro to micro in his theory of revolution. He states that individual changes and regional changes in government combine to create new political situations in the entire country. Revolutions that are effective in some countries are ineffective in others. Furthermore, some revolutions can create significant changes while others prevent change. It can also create change that is felt in some regions but is not felt in others or affects certain aspects of life but not others. Essentially, Katz's theory is that there is no one definition of a revolution. The central aspects of most revolutions, however, are harsh leadership, inequality that leads to resource imbalance, and a decrease in cultural unification or pluralistic tolerance. […]

I saw a report that Soros has turned everything over to his son. Does anyone know anything about his son? You are right, this "battle for the soul" of Israel has been going on since the late 1800's. But, actually it was the secular Jews who came and drained the swamps, plowed the fields and built most of the settlements. Sadly, we, religious Jews, had a golden opportunity to purchase the entire Land of Israel from the Sultan, money in hand! truly a neis, but it was determined that the time of Moshiach has not yet arrived. So, Hashem gave the task to the secular, communists. They threw away the Tanach and replaced it with Trotsky and other communist manifestos. Then, as religious Jews arrived, the battles began. There was been a long lull, so to speak, but ultimately this battle must be fought because it really is about the "soul of Israel." Our task now is to be foot soldiers for HKBH and to hold on tight to the rope!

My take on this is that either he’s been “charged” and needs to stand trial (mil. tribunal) or he’s ill and knows the end is coming, so he gave it all to his LEFTIST son. Somewhere between the two is the reason. In any event, his days are numbered.

True Neshama, and thank you so much for posting my comments. You are right, frum Jews did come and settle the land. But they also skipped an incredible opportunity to create an entirely Torah-true Israel when they had the money in hand and then voted against using it to buy Israel from the sultan. Eim HaBanim (I think that's the correct title) covers this topic in depth. In any event, if you ever read Holy Woman, you have some sense of the huge fights that took place between the secular "zionists/communists" and the religious Jews who arrived later. And I do believe it's the same fight we face today. Thank you for saying I'm busy! It's somewhat true, but Hashem should please send me more business so that I am even busier! It's true, the frumme Jews came in the 1800's but were usually the real pious and many poor came with no push nor understanding of how to really maintain the Land, as for 2000 years exiled out of the Land, they weren't allowed to own land in the galut and so didn't have much knowledge of how to work it.
They studied the Torah, tried to open up some yeshivot. Reminds me of a story told by one who was descended from these righteous Jews when he said that these secular Jews who came more towards the start of the 20th century and some were real bolsheviks and discarded Torah altogether, that was the reason for their coming to do the hard work of building up the Land. That was their mitzvah! I believe also that there is much truth in that.

There was a group of pious frum yidden who did an apprentiship in the “old country” on how to farm and work the land = they did this before they settled just outside of TA, near Jaffa. They knew how to work the land and did so. Please read about Mazkeret Batya in one of the above comments.

I’m not surprised that the info about the early religious Jews that came to settle the land has been “revised” and/or made “parve” in order to make the early zionists/socialists the main show in town.
