Winter storm 'Barbara' made landfall on the Israeli coast Monday morning, bringing with it torrential rains and winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour.
The strong winds have already caused substantial damage. In Bnei Brak, a metal plate fell from a tower, causing traffic to be closed off on several streets.
In Or Yehuda, a 13-year-old girl was lightly injured by a tree which fell on her due to the strong winds. Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedic Yuval Malek said: "When we arrived at the scene, we saw the victim was conscious. We gave her medical treatment and evacuated her to the hospital while she was in light condition.”
In Ashdod, a scaffolding collapsed onto a group of parked cars. In a residential neighborhood, a tree was knocked over by the wind and crushed a car and struck the wall of a house. No one was hurt in either incident.
In Tel Aviv, a 23-year-old cyclist was injured when she was struck by a glass window that fell on her due to the winds from a building. The woman suffered head injuries and is in moderate condition.
In addition, first responders were rushed to an apartment in Tel Aviv following a report of an 81-year-old man who fell in the street due to the winds and was brought into a home by a citizen to get out of the cold and high winds. "He was conscious and suffered minor bruises on his upper limbs. We evacuated him to a hospital, where he is in light condition," shared an MDA medic.
In addition, a government environmental protection agency warned that there is a danger that certain beachside cliffs could collapse as a result of the storm and called on the public to exercise caution.
The storm is expected to last through Wednesday and peak Tuesday night into Wednesday, when temperatures will be low and snow will fall on mountains over 1,000 meters in elevation.
