BEIRUT: A small earthquake that struck South Lebanon early on Wednesday sparked widespread panic as residents ran from their homes barefoot, with many saying they “feared for their children’s lives.” The 4.3-magnitude tremor, the latest in a series of minor quakes, hit the coastline near the southern city of Sidon shortly after 8 a.m., further terrifying Lebanese still recovering from the shock of twin earthquakes that devastated large areas of Turkiye and Syria over two weeks ago. Earlier, a 6.3-magnitude quake centered 20 km offshore struck northern Lebanon on Monday night, followed by two others off the coast of southern Lebanon, near Sidon, on Tuesday. Experts joined caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati in appealing for calm.

Headline: "Lebanese panic as tremor strikes, sea retreats."

I grew up in Polynesia, and I just want to take the opportunity to underscore to your readers: if you ever happen to be at seaside and you see that the sea is pulling way far back (areas that are "always" underwater are now exposed) evacuate to high ground as quickly as possible. The sea's retreat MAY be the prelude to an incoming tsunami. The arabnews article quoted some official saying that such was not the case this time. But as my parents of blessed memory always said as we drove up into the hills in response to tsunami alerts, "Better safe than sorry." Pikuach nefesh!

In 2004 December, tsunami occurred in South India, friends who lived not far from the beach said, how the waters receded and then came back as a big vast wave. Many lives were lost.
Here a video of how it happens..
