Otzma Yehudit Statement

Otzma Yehudit MK: 'If we can't fulfill our promises, we'll leave the government'

"We haven't seen genuine policy changes," says MK Almog Cohen.

Following recent clashes within the government and between the National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai, MK Almog Cohen of the Otzma Yehudit party stressed that the warnings issued by Ben-Gvir, his party leader, that he will dismantle the coalition, should be taken at face-value.

"We're fighting to achieve national security," Cohen told Radio 103FM on Thursday. "If we aren't given the necessary and proper tools to fulfill that task, then we won't be able to be part of the government."

Cohen added that, "Of course we don't prefer a scenario of a left-wing government, but our feelings are understandable. We didn't enter government for the prestige of cabinet positions. We're here to make a difference.

"I've been forced to conclude that this government is still in its infancy, and we're not liking what we're seeing at present. We haven't seen true policy changes in line with what we agreed upon when we entered the government, in order to form a broad coalition. At the end of the day I'd have to say that this isn't what we were hoping for," Cohen admits. "We want to bring about national security with a public consensus, and if the government won't give us the ability to do that, we won't be able to continue as a part of it."

Cohen also stressed that, "We were elected with a large majority from a broad swathe of the population that knows exactly what it wants. It wants personal security, governance, and equal enforcement of the law. If we're prevented from delivering on those promises we made to our voters, then there's no reason why we should be here.”
