'Diaspora Jewry still struggling with coronavirus'
Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu says Diaspora Jewry still struggling with coronavirus.
"Now is the time to encourage them and give them strength.”
Tzfat Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu called on Sunday morning to show support for Diaspora Jewry, which he said was still struggling against the coronavirus.
"There was no time when our Diaspora brothers did not help the State of Israel," he said, and called for taking action of "unity and love" on their behalf.
"Rosh Hodesh Sivan is the day on which we stood at Mount Sinai as one man with one heart," he wrote on Facebook. "Our brothers abroad are in great distress. It is a mitzvah to strengthen them at this difficult time. Not to be confused, Israel has seen a loosening in restrictions but abroad funeral homes are still full. "
Rabbi Eliyahu added, "Hundreds of thousands have lost their relatives to coronavirus, which is still spreading in the US, France, England, Spain, South and Central America and more. The hospitals are full and no one knows what the day will bring. All this aside from the hundreds of thousands who have lost their jobs and livelihoods."
"We must remember that there was no time when our Diaspora brothers did not help the State of Israel," he wrote. "There is no yeshiva that was not built with their help. There is no military unit that was not fostered by them. In every free-loan fund, school, community, you will find their donations, in any hospital or university. "
Rabbi Eliyahu noted what could be done for them. "Our sages say that a good word is stronger than money. And a good word can also be sent via phone or video. You can also make a list of family or friends abroad. Write them something in Hebrew or in their language."
He added, "Someone told me to organize a prayer for them and sent a video to his family. They passed the video on to all their community members who cried with excitement. There is no doubt that even more ideas and activities of love and unity can be generated. Now is the time, don't miss it. Now is the time to encourage and strengthen.” arutzsheva
