Army Chief Kohavi: IDF reports only to defense minister: […] Aviv Kohavi denounced the government’s plan to restructure military authority in the West Bank … rejecting the authority of the second minister appointed a role in the Defense Ministry — Religious Zionism chief Bezalel Smotrich.

Smotrich reacted angrily to Kohavi’s criticism, accusing him of “populism” and laying the groundwork for a future in politics.

“If Kohavi wanted to understand and not just attack with populism in preparation for his entry into the political field, he could have talked to me and understood that the goal is not to harm the IDF’s chain of command but to remove the Civil Administration from the IDF and make it civilian,” Smotrich tweeted Friday.

“The IDF will deal with security and a civilian system will manage civilian life. Good for the citizens and good for the IDF,” he said. Kohavi is confused and forgot that Israel is a country that has an army and not an army that has a country. The responsibilities were transferred to me by law and I am convinced that his successor and the rest of the IDF commanders will act in accordance with the law,” Smotrich said.

SUPREME COURT HAYUT UNIMPRESSED:

"This is an unbridled attack on the judicial system, as if it were an enemy that must be attacked and subdued. This is a plan to crush the judicial system. It is designed to deal a fatal blow to the independence of the judiciary and turn it into a silent authority," she said.

The Israeli Deep State is in disarray

On Friday, senior officials in the Likud said that the plan presented by Levin is not final, and that "there will be changes in the reform”.  According to the same sources, the plan was not intended to pass as is, and there is room for maneuver.

The comments by the Likud officials are also in line with what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday afternoon about the process being a lengthy one, and that the Knesset's Constitution Committee will discuss the reform and hear all the positions for and against it. While there will be very significant changes in the judicial system, the Likud officials said, they do not have to be radical.

HOWEVER: Levin later fired back, saying that Hayut’s criticism was proof that his proposed reforms, planned over a lengthy period of time with legal experts, are necessary. "I am obliged to hold a comprehensive dialogue with the representatives of all sections of the people in order to reach the best and most balanced result. Millions of citizens, and I am among them, are determined to restore the balance between the government's branches and restore trust in the legal system in Israel," he declared.
