SHIN BET DISCLOSURE

Police Commander Avishai Moalem: Shin Bet Persecuting Jews Selectively

Commander of the Judea and Samaria police district Avishai Moalem is suspected of leaking classified information from investigations to National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, in exchange for a promise of promotion. During his interrogation at the Police Internal Investigations Department, Moalem denied the accusations and claimed that this was a personal persecution directed against him by senior Shin Bet officials due to his professional views.

“The Shin Bet selectively persecuted Jews and ignored attacks against them time and time again,” Moalem stated on Tuesday. “When I decided to take care of these events myself, they marked me as a target.”

Commander Moalem is suspected, among other things, of bribery and breach of trust in a case in which the Commissioner of the Prison Service was also questioned with a warning. The Shin Bet, Israel’s clandestine police which includes an extensive “Jewish department” targeting Judea and Samaria settlers, went after Moalem for his having refused to obey the Shin Bet’s demand to arrest right-wing activists, suggesting the police commander was looking to find favor with Minister Ben Gvir to gain a promotion.

The Shin Bet also suspects Moalem of allegedly leaking intelligence information to the Office of the Minister of National Security through unconventional means.

This is the second time in less than three months that the army and the clandestine police are penalizing their officers for revealing concealed information to the prime minister and to ministers.

Last Thursday, after Moalem returned to his office and had a conversation with his aide, the Police Investigations Department requested a two-month extension of the restrictive conditions imposed on Moalem. According to them, this was a crime of obstruction and abuse of official authority, and thus they asked the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court to ban Moalem from police stations, prohibit his contact with Judea and Samaria police officers, and ban him from using police computers and other systems.

However, Judge Zion Sahrai ruled that there was no reasonable suspicion of obstruction on Moalem’s part since the aide with whom he interacted was not on the list of individuals with whom he was not permitted to communicate. At the same time, Judge Sahrai ruled that Moalem’s restrictive conditions be extended until Thursday this week.
