Arabic broadcaster calls the Galilee "Occupied Northern Palestine"on Israeli TV
Are Public Broadcasting Corportation Kan's Arabic language programs undergoing "Palestinization" under the Israeli taxpayer's radar?
The Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation Kan’ 11 Arabic language news site Makan on August 3 presented a story about a car accident in the Upper Galilee involving an IDF vehicle, saying that it took place in "Occupied Northern Palestine."
Kan11TV is an Israeli state-owned television channel
paid for by the Israeli taxpayer..
After much public outrage, the website removed the wording and changed it. The original can be seen in the Hebrew tweet below by Middle East expert Dr. Eli Cohen: Cohen, who has been following the public Arabic broadcasts, sees this wording as part of a process he calls creeping "Palestinization" of Israel's public broadcasting in Arabic, the clearest example of which is this description of the traffic accident as occurring in "occupied Northern Palestine.”
The purpose of free air time in Arabic is to encourage integration of Israeli Arabs into Israeli society, he says, but as of late, it has been doing the opposite. There was a special broadcast for anti-Israel Nakba Day and there are attacks on the government made by Arabic broadcasters, which have never occurred before.
In fact, Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi sent a letter to Kan broadcasting over a month ago about the increasing "Palestinization" of its Arabic broadcasts.
The B’Tsalmo human rights organization sent a letter to the Kan’s management demanding that an investigation be opened and the employee responsible for this alleged mistake be fired.
B’Tsalmo CEO, Shai Glick, wrote in his letter: "I expect a thorough investigation into this incident making sure that lessons are learned. In addition, until the end of the investigation, all those involved in this serious incident should be suspended, and if it the “Occupied Palestine” wording is found to be deliberate, they should be fired at once. Firing a person is not an easy thing, and I’m not demanding it lightly. However, in this case there’s a clear crossing of a red line and it must be handled with the utmost severity.”
Glick added: “Anyone who calls the State of Israel an 'occupied' country has no place in the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation but should find employment on Al Jazeera or on Hezbollah’s TV channel.”
"This is not a one-time mistake. Previously, the Kan Arabic language website refused to call a Palestinian Arab murderer of women and children a 'terrorist'. It's time to cleanse the Augean stables - immediately.”
Kan 11 responded to the complaints, saying that "the sentence was changed as soon as we received the complaint and the issue is under investigation by the corporation's ombudsman. When his work is completed, we will inform the public.”
