There was always rivalry between Yosef & Yehudah. Yosef was a tzadik but had a bit of 'innocent' arrogance in him and his descendants did inherit that also. The chutzpah of Yeravam Ben Nevat to try and steal the royalty from Shlomo HaMelech's son, Rechavam was proof of that. Truth is that Yeravam was on a much higher level, Torah wise, than Rechavam but he did not have the right to do what he did, and, of course, not only did he take the ten tribes with him, but he descended into idolatry, etc. In fact, Chazal tell us that when H' asked if he would join with MBD, the answer was 'who will go first' (i.e. who has the top billing), Hashem answered Dovid (Moshiach Ben Dovid). I think his answer was 'I'm not interested'.
