Reb Neuberger: ZOS CHANUKAH – New Moon in the Sky

A NEW MOON IN THE SKY!

So here we are the Eighth Day, and a New Moon is shining in the night sky!

We have conquered darkness and depression and we have found a path to escape from the tyranny of our feelings, which mislead us constantly. There is hope where we thought there was no hope. There is Shalom Bayis where we thought there was only darkness.

Look at the light of the menorah, or – if you are the husband – look at your tzitzis or your Gemora. Daven to Hashem that the flame of Torah should surround you and protect you and guide you. In that flame, you will find the strength to overcome the Yetzer ha Ra.

The snake in Gan Eden was OUTSIDE Chava! Sin entered only when she listened to the snake and swallowed the fruit. But in fact, the snake is still outside. The Yetzer ha Ra is intrinsically outside us. That negative voice is really not me and I don’t have to listen to it.

Looking at the menorah is not a magic formula. It’s an understanding that we have to work on ourselves to hear the voice of the Torah. Look at your husband as a Holy Jew who is trying to elevate himself by the Torah. Look at your wife as an Aishes Chayil who is trying to elevate your home.

We all have challenges; the world is filled with obstacles. If we help each other fulfill our spiritual goals, then the light of the menorah will permeate our home and we will B”H merit a Bayis Ne’eman b’Yisroel. Not only that, we can hope to see the Light of the Menorah in the Bais Hamikdosh!

May Hashem have mercy on us and send our Righteous Redeemer soon to save us all.

“May the Light of the moon be like the light of the sun and like the light of the seven days of creation, as it was before it was diminished, as it is said, ‘The two great luminaries.’ And may there be fulfilled upon us the verse that is written: ‘They shall seek Hashem, their G-d and Dovid, their king.’ Amen!” (Kiddush Levana)

A Freilichen Chanukah! May we merit to see a world filled with light!

With all our blessings! -- Roy Neuberger
