Only hours after the shooting attack in Huwara on Sunday, which left American citizen David Stern severely wounded, IDF Samaria Regional Commander Shimon Sisu issued a closed military zone order on the junctions near the site of the attack in an attempt to prevent protests by local Jewish residents.
The order comes after widespread calls among the area's communities following the attack to hold demonstrations at central junctions in the area against the passivity of the defense establishment and the Israeli government in dealing with the growing terrorism. In footage filmed by one of the residents, a Border Police officer can be heard telling those present: "The area that you are in was declared a closed military zone for security forces only," as he read the order that was issued by the regional commander, which states that vehicles are also prohibited from passing through the area.
"There are no words to describe this disgrace," said Yitzhar resident Yosef Goldberg. "For weeks and months, we have been screaming from every stage that our lives were made worthless and the writing was on the wall, but the defense establishment and government just don't care.
Today, we again experienced a serious terror attack in the exact same place, but instead of learning a lesson and beginning to do its job, the defense establishment chooses, of all things, to fight the demonstration residents who go out to fight for their lives and security. The system has officially lost its direction," said Goldberg.
Last month a terrorist murdered brothers Hallel and Yagel Yaniv in Huwara near the site of Sunday's attack. Following the murder, protesters gathered in the Arab town to protest the attack and the town's support of the terrorists. During the demonstrations, confrontations occurred between protesters and local residents, and several fires were set.
