Seder Night Attack

Elderly Jew attacked in the Old City on Seder night - and arrested

67-year-old man arrested for drawing his gun after an Arab youth beat him with a metal rod shortly after the Passover Seder.

An elderly Jewish resident of the Old City of Jerusalem was attacked by a terrorist with metal rod near his home overnight, shortly after the conclusion of his Passover Seder.

The 67-year-old victim was struck in the face before he drew his pistol to defend himself. Several dozen Arabs surrounded the attacker and victim and shouted words of encouragement to the terrorist.

Magen David Adom medics provided medical care to the victim.

Following the attack, police arrested the victim, to the shock of his family. He is scheduled to be brought for a hearing at the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court tonight. Attorney Adi Keidar of the Honenu legal organization will demand his immediate release at the hearing.

Residents of the area said that despite their warnings about the lack of security and threat level in the neighborhood, there were no police officers on the streets at the time of the attack. In addition, after the attack, hundreds of Arabs gathered in the street, chanting cheers for the terrorist and incitement against the Jewish residents. They also blocked the street so no Jewish person could pass.

The victim's family said: "At the end of the Seder night, about half an hour after midnight, our father, who is 67-years-old, was on his way back home. Just before he got home, he was attacked by a young Arab terrorist who was about 16 years old - he was pushed hard, attacked with fists and beaten by the terrorist with an iron rod. Our father was hit in the face and bled. During the attack, our father, who has a heart condition, warned the terrorist to stop the attack, that he was armed, and to stop attacking him. When the terrorist did not stop the attack, with many dozens of young Arabs around them, our father pulled out his personal weapon, for which he has had a license for decades, and defended himself. Almost thirty years ago, his father was stabbed in the back a few meters from the scene of the current incident," they said
