Rabbi Weissman: The Root Cause of Heresy and Blindness

The Root Cause of Heresy and Blindness
Plus hishtadlus for severely misguided Jews, and more

"Should your brothers go to war while you stay here?"

This pasuk from this week's parsha is frequently hijacked and used as a bumper sticker to pretend that there is a moral/Torah obligation to "serve" in a kefira army. Since Torah cannot and must not be reduced to propaganda slogans, in this week's Torah class we took a closer look at the actual meaning and context of this pasuk. Not surprisingly, it fails to support the agenda of those who hijack it (not that it will make any difference to them).

We then learned about the obligation of one who kills through negligence to remain confined to a so-called city of refuge. Even if he is a general like Yoav, and one might argue that the Jewish people need him to protect themselves from an existential threat, we do not allow him to leave the city. The pikuach nefesh argument isn't a get out of jail free card, and this is just another clear lesson that a Jewish army has its battles fought by Hashem, not according to the rules of "experts" and actuaries.

We segued from there to the main part of the class, which is a fundamental essay from Rav Elchonon Wasserman, Hy"d, which addressed the following questions:

1. How can the Torah command people to believe in Hashem? If they already do, they don't need a commandment, and if they don't, a commandment won't help.

2. How can the Hashem expect simple children after their bar and bat mitzvah to fully believe in Him, when the most intelligent philosophers and others don't believe in Him at all?

3. How can Hashem punish simple gentiles for not keeping their commandments if they never even heard of them?

4. Being that the Torah commands us to follow the majority, why don't Jews follow the majority of the nations of the world?

Why are so many people blind to the truth, no matter how obvious it is? How is it that so many intelligent, learned, and even righteous people are so easily duped?

The answer cuts to the very nature of the human mind and why people believe what they believe. I hope you will learn the lessons and share them.

Exhibit #1: Hishtadlus for severely misguided Jews in galus:

https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/412114

A bunch of fat European rabbis go through the motions of learning self-defense while joking about it, and others stand around bored and distracted. (I feel bad that I laughed so hard during the three weeks.)

Yeah, that will put the fear of G–D in them.

Exhibit #2: Hishtadlus for severely misguided Jews in Eretz Yisrael:

https://www.jfeed.com/news-israel/szskjo

A mother from Israel is reeling after all three of her sons, who serve in IDF combat units, were wounded in the ongoing war in Gaza...Her second son, Yedidya, was also wounded in combat but bounced back after a long rehab at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. He’s now back in action as a deputy battalion commander. She described Yedidya as a fighter who “never whines, just keeps pushing for the next mission.”

Obviously what they went through is horrific, but what's also horrific is that they are so damn proud and pushing for more. Even Molech didn't entail sacrificing ALL of one's children.

Idolatry eats its own.

The Israeli Government's [Erev Rav's] Plan to Transform [Destroy] Chareidi Society.

It is not the job of a government in a so-called "democracy" to engage in social engineering, prevent a certain demographic from increasing its numbers and influence, or otherwise research, infiltrate, and transform [destroy] a demographic.

I am not "charedi" nor a charedi apologist, and I don't believe there should even be such labels. However, if you rationalize this sinister evil when it comes to "charedim" (for the greater good), then you cannot object when they do the same to you and your demographic.

And don't fool yourself; they are. You're nothing more than a lab rat and a commodity to them.

All decent people must put aside their differences and unite against this great evil. No excuses.
