"SAVING THE PLANET BY KILLING IT"

SAVING THE PLANET BY KILLING IT

By Yonoson Rosenblum in Mishpacha Magazine | DECEMBER 4, 2019
What fuels the climate change activists — science or politics?

Alarge group of Harvard and Yale students occupied the field during halftime of the annual Harvard-Yale game on November 23 to celebrate their virtue by demanding that the two universities divest all fossil fuel stocks. I assume that not one of the 40 or so students arrested by the police, who took an hour to clear the field, has any substantial knowledge of even one of the 20 or so disciplines subsumed under climatology or the history of climate change throughout human history. (That is also true, incidentally, of myself and well over 99 percent of those who write confidently about climate change.)

If pressed, the students would have simply cited the alleged "scientific consensus" on anthropogenic global warming and shouted down anyone who challenged the existence of such a consensus. For good measure, they would likely have accused the challenger of "threatening" them.

No such consensus exists. In September, 500 scientists and professionals in climate-related fields sent the Secretary-General of the United Nations a "European Climate Declaration," in which they noted, inter alia, that the computer climate models upon which the predictions of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports are based have consistently failed as predictive tools. They therefore "are not remotely plausible as policy tools" and further ignore that enriching the atmosphere with carbon dioxide (CO2) is beneficial.

A little over a decade ago, environmental scientists Dennis Bray and Hans von Storch polled 530 colleagues from 27 countries and asked them to express their agreement with the statement "climate change is primarily the result of anthropogenic causes," i.e., human behavior, on a scale of one to seven. The average, 3.62, came down almost exactly at the middle — not that scientific issues are determined by majority vote.

Such consensus as exists refers primarily to the IPCC and the allocation of university research funding. Guy Sorman of City Journal reports that in a 2005 conversation with Rajendra Pachauri, the director of the IPCC, the latter told him that he recruited only climatologists convinced of the carbon-dioxide warming explanation.

Dr. Judith Curry, former chair of the department of earth and atmospheric sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology, left academia and the world of government-funded research, she says, because "climatology has become a political party with totalitarian tendencies. If you don't support the UN consensus on human-caused global warming, if you express the slightest skepticism, you are a climate-change denier [i.e., akin to a Holocaust denier]... a quasi-fascist who must be banned from the scientific community.... Those daring to take an interest in possible natural causes of climatic variation — such as solar shifts or the earth's oscillations — aren't well regarded in the scientific community, to put it mildly."

But why ignore natural causes? The earth's temperatures have been at various times much warmer than today. Climate change alarmists point to rising sea levels as proof of impending doom from anthropogenic warming. But as Professor Richard Lindzen, the Albert P. Sloan Professor Emeritus of Meteorology at MIT, notes, sea levels have been rising since the end of the last ice age.

Dr. Curry points out that from 1910 to 1940, before the dramatic increase in carbon emissions, there was a warming trend, and from 1940 to 1980, the earth experienced a sustained cooling period, even as carbon emissions jumped, giving rise to "consensus" predictions of an impending ice age.

And we may well be entering a similar cooling period. NASA satellites have recorded a heat loss from the thermosphere (the upper layer of the atmosphere), which is consistent with observations that we are entering a period of low sunspot activity, similar to that which coincided with the period from the mid-17th to early 18th century known as the Little Ice Age.

Even the raw data of temperature upon which Global Average Temperature (GAT) is based is highly questionable. Seventy percent of the earth's surface is water, and most of the measurements are based on interpolation between stations. And the recording stations are too frequently in places that inflate the temperature — e.g., near airport landing strips or in built-up urban areas. Aware of the problem, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration set up a network of 114 pristine temperature stations in the lower 48 states in 2005. The recorded data since then show no warming.

BUT EVEN IF ALARMISTS were right about anthropogenic warming, their policy prescriptions are economically and practically insane. Nor do they believe their own hysteria. Former president Obama is famously pronounced his 2008 nomination "the moment the oceans began to slow their rise and the earth began to heal." Yet he recently put down $15 million on a mansion on Martha's Vineyard, a coastal island that would be a prime candidate for submersion by rising sea levels.

If the alarmists believed their own 12 years to doomsday scenarios, they'd be pushing the rapid expansion of nuclear energy — the only non-carbon producing form of energy. Yet almost all reflexively oppose any reliance on nuclear energy, despite dramatic recent advances in developing cheaper, smaller, and safer nuclear plants.

Not one Democratic presidential candidate openly repudiated Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's proposed Green New Deal, and several have endorsed it, even though it would bankrupt the United States and end all industrial development, without making a dent in overall carbon emissions. By far the largest polluters — China, India, and Brazil — would still do little to reduce their emissions. A brilliant strategy if we all want to end up in Chinese re-education camps.

Indeed, American capitalism has proven the best engine of carbon emission reduction. The fracking revolution has simultaneously enabled America to reduce carbon emissions more than any other country, by switching to natural gas from coal and petroleum, and to achieve the once-deemed-impossible goal of energy independence. Diogenes had a better chance of finding an "honest man" than one would have of finding a Democratic supporter of fracking.

Unrealistic "green" mandates drive energy prices through the roof. In 1992, Germany committed to reducing carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2020. It will not come close. But electricity rates in Germany, as a result of its Energiwend (energy transition) commitment to wind and solar power, have reached nearly three times the US average. The Minnesota-based Center for the America Experiment did an economic study of the cost of a proposal to use 50 percent renewable energy sources by 2030. It found that doing so would cost the state $80 billion on infrastructure by 2050, increase the average family's electric bill by $1,200 annually, and reduce the state's "GNP" (gross national product) by $3 billion per annum, while costing 21,000 jobs.

Too frequently, the obsession with renewables only results in higher carbon emissions. Federally mandated ethanol requirements for gasoline proved a boon for corn farmers and led to skyrocketing world food prices. But the process of producing ethanol, it turns out, releases more CO2 than it saves. Sir John Beddington, former chief science advisor to the British government, notes that to meet European Union renewable directives, countries increasingly have to burn wood, which releases four times as much carbon dioxide as electricity or natural gas per megawatt-hour and 50 percent more than coal. And in cutting down vast numbers of trees, the world is deprived of forests that serve as vast carbon sinks.

DR. CURRY EXPLAINS the elites' devotion to climate change alarmism. It serves their opposition to capitalism and industrial development, and their preference for world government, run by experts, over democratic nation states. That strikes me as right. To that indictment, I would add one other charge: hatred of human beings. Population control frequently ranks at the top of the climate alarmists' agenda.

Danish statistician Bjorn Lomborg long ago argued in The Skeptical Environmentalist that with the $150 billion dollars that enforcement of the Kyoto Treaty (predecessor to the Paris Accords) would have cost annually, and which would have resulted in, at most, a .2 degree reduction in world temperature by 2100, we could purify all the water in the world and save tens of thousands of lives annually.

I wonder if the virtuous Harvard-Yale demonstrators thought of that?

A DAY'S WAGES: Farms "Like Lambs To The Slaughter" - Grand Solar Minimum

An excellent and soulful video by Christian of Ice Age Farmer

As damages from the flooding in US Midwest surpass $5.3 billion -- affecting farmers across the nation -- and more flooding is expected in 2020, it is time to step back and take stock of what is happening. The war on farmers -- the war on our food -- is a silent war with quiet weapons, meaning we must work to SEE what is going on: farm after farm lost.

COMMENTS:

#I want to tell you a true story. Me and my wife went grocery shopping. We went to Costco then we went to Vons for our meat. It has been probably 6 or 7 months since I personally went shop with my wife? she normally does the grocery shopping for the house and I go every once in a while. When I walked into Costco I was simply amazed at the amount of food but really surprised at the low prices. I was thinking to myself how could the producers of this food sell this food for such a low price, especially when the crops last year was completely wiped out? and this year they were decimated along with the cattle? It really made me think, and really made me realize we are in big trouble, I mean big big trouble. Because I know the farmers and ranchers can not sell all this produce and meat for this low price, they just can't. they have to be losing billions of dollars overall. It really suprises me that there is still so much food on the store shelves. It even made me think? It there really a problem? I personally know farmers and ranchers, I have family in California and the mid-east they crow crops of vegetables and in California they grow citrus, nuts, and avocados and all if them are in financial trouble. They are hurting bad, and it can't continue, they will be out of business in the next year 2020 unless they raise the prices alot or get help from the State they have their farm or ranch in or the Federal government. Period, in not they will be bankrupt for sure 100%. Some of my family have been farmers for over 100 years and I personally was raised on a small ranch until I was 14 years old, so I know about ranching and farming. My late uncle. My dad's brother. His family has two cattle ranches, the big one is in Oklahoma and the smaller ranch is in north Texas. The ranch in Texas is more of a breeding ranch, were they insinuate the heffers and raise premium bills and they do DNA stuff. The ranch in Oklahoma is just a pure cattle ranch, were they take the cattle from Texas to live and graze until they are taken to market. My uncles family cattle operation is a small one compared to the big ones out there, I'm thinking 25,000 head of cattle, in the last 8 months they are down to about 12,000 head, they lost more than half their cattle, most drown in a big flood they had this last spring and the ranch is in big big trouble financially????? sure they had insurance that paid from some of the losses but much more than cattle was destroyed and sure they had some insurance for that also but with raising anything it's the time and bredding cycles you can't get back no matter what you do. Anyways this comment totally depresses me. We are in high trouble, I mean BIG, BIG trouble. This stores might be packed this years end with food and meat at cheap price. But only because the government and their price setting, the government is 100% screwing our great farmers and ranch, it's sad and makes me want to cry and totally pisses me off at the same time. I'm also "SCARED" because I know what's coming to our Country and the World. I have Children and Grandchildren and that is who I'm scared for. Screw myself, it is what it is, but my kids, my grandkids, what does the future hold for them? They will not have the same life we all have had, it's going to get nasty, not just a little inconvenience, but all out mad max. Think I'm exaggerating??? Think again, take a real hard look at the evidence, no food? What would you do to feed your starving child that is crying because he or she is hungry. GOD I hate writing this. But this will be the reality of things to come. So, please if anything prepare yourself and your family for what is coming. God Bless you and your family and may God Bless the United States of America.

#Many thank-you's go to you for mentioning Bosnia, which like other war damaged countries is, along with all other European Nations, now facing agricultural collapse due to heavy out of season snows, horrific winter snows, frightening hailstorms, flood rains & a commonality of life threatening winds + deliberate & malevolent government decisions leading to disaster after disaster. Many of our leaders seem hell bent on collapsing their countries while at the same line lining their own pockets..

#When you talk to the older Germans they will do almost anything to keep the farmers in the black and it's because they've seen starvation. They know the true value of growing food and what happens when you can't. When I see the farmers in Canada growing canola it's such a joke to me. I don't consider that's real food. The nutritionist will tell you that when you hydrolyze canola oil you mess it up compared to olive oil. Farming is big business. There are people here farming 60+ quarters of land. They don't really care about the land they're renting or the glyphosate in the food chain.

#Frightening news, so many unaware! Our parents' generation who lived thru WW2 see the signs in climate plus farming & food/media nazis AND a repeat of signs & signals before WW2.

#and still on a daily basis in the good ole ussa they throw out thousands of pounds of food a day at every grocery store in every state. perfectly good food. due to a bruise, or a nick or anything. meat, dairy cheese ewggs vegies fruits. thousands and thousands of pounds of food goes in the trash. people need to wake up. soon when there is nothing left, maybe then they will be up in arms on how this should have been top priority - horse feed went up 5 dollars a bag in less then 5 months. hay shortages everywhere. some bales are 7-9 dollars for a small sq bale. folks wont be able to afford it. so they will end up at slaughter for human consumption in europe. we are in trouble folks.

#If I remember my history correctly, this is the exact same set up as in the late 1920's. The farm economy had fallen off a cliff well before the stock market crashed.

Parshas Vayeitzei – Climb the Ladder

Climb the Ladder
By Roy S. Neuberger

My friends, I don’t think we are allowing ourselves to understand the gravity of world events. If we would contemplate what is happening, then our davening would be different and every thought would be directed toward personal, national and world survival.
Several weeks ago, we read, “Yitzchok entreated Hashem opposite his wife” (Bereishis 25:21). These tefillos concerned life itself, the very future of our nation. Obviously, they were deep and passionate. And “Hashem allowed Himself to be entreated,” because “Hashem desires the prayers of the righteous” (Yevamos 64a).
Today it is appropriate for all of us to daven with the understanding that our lives are at stake. I want to emphasize here that my davening is far from where it should be; I am not satisfied with my tefillah. It is frightening to me how often I make a brocha without thinking about what I am saying. This needs constant attention and awareness. If we want to survive into the age of Moshiach, we need to cry out to Hashem “bechol levovcha uvechol nasfshecha … with all our heart and soul.”
The foundations of the world are shaking. Orange juice! We take for granted that this American staple will be available plentifully for our breakfast. Is it an accident that a microscopic organism that has traveled from China is destroying the Florida citrus industry?
Okay, that’s just one industry. There are many more.
My friends, we must open our eyes. The way of life we have come to know and expect is shaking and trembling. Years ago, I remember Rav Moshe Shapiro zt”l writing that we cannot expect a “normal” existence anymore until Moshiachcomes. To bring home this point, our people are under siege around the world.
In this week’s parsha, Yaakov Avinu sets out from the home of his parents, bereft of all possessions (see Rashi on Bereishis 29:11). He is totally alone, under attack by dangerous enemies who want to destroy him. All has been taken from him, except his connection with his Father in Heaven. Who could be more alone than this heroic man of destiny?
In the utter darkness, he sees a ladder ascending toward Shomayim.
This is our one hope. This is the story of Am Yisroel.
We are alone in a hostile world. All we have is our connection to Shomayim. This is everything, but we have to hold on to it with all our strength. We have to daven like Yitzchok and Rivkah. We have to dream like Yaakov. We have to climb the ladder. It is all we have.

Rabbi Winston – Parshas Vayaitzei – Antisemitism, We’re All The Same

And he heard the words of Lavan's sons, saying, “Ya'akov has taken all that belonged to our father, and from what belonged to our father, he has amassed this entire fortune.” (Bereishis 31:1)

I WAS “TREATED” last week to a video clip of some right-wing church newscaster commenting on the upcoming impeachment proceedings in the United States. The caption read, “Schiff and friends have given ammunition to the Jew haters!” And it was not exaggerating in the least.
A “Jew coup” was what the talking head called it. He blamed the attacks on President Trump as being Jew-originated, and then warned his “fellow” Americans to prepare. “The Jews are coming for you,” he said, “and wherever they have, millions of Christians have always been killed.” A classic falsehood and misrepresentation of history.
As I finished the clip, I wondered if the guy had since been arrested, but doubted it. I also wondered how many hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Christians have watched this masterful presentation of age-old church-generated vicious anti-Semitism, and bought it. “Guys like that still exist?” I asked myself out loud.
And then I turned my attention towards the subjects of the videos. I wondered if they had ANY inkling of how much danger their high profile and want-to-be-future-president tactics were endangering the Jews in America. I doubted that too, because people in such positions usually look at themselves as Americans much more than as Jews.
And when I was told about another American Jew who had been living a despicable life until his recent death, and all the negative publicity it created, I gulped a second time. He harmed so many people and his crimes involved so many high-ranking officials, for and against him, that his Jewish affiliation must have come up negatively on many occasions.
An anti-Semite doesn’t really care if a Jew believes in G–D or not, or holds of Torah from Sinai or rejects the idea. A Jew may take note of this with respect to another Jew, and a religious one may look at a non-religious one as being “almost gentile.” But a non-Jew, especially an anti-Semitic one, puts ALL Jews into one and the same category called “Jew,” and ascribes all the conspiracies and plots against the Christian world to the WHOLE lot.
Then my mind went to the next level, the G–D level. We all know the only way to get many Jews to leave exile, comfortable OR painful, is through excessive anti-Semitism. At least that is the way it has worked for the past 3500 years or so, going all the way back to Ya’akov Avinu in this week’s parsha:

And he heard the words of Lavan's sons, saying, “Ya'akov has taken all that belonged to our father, and from what belonged to our father, he has amassed this entire fortune.” And Ya’akov saw Lavan's countenance, that he was not disposed toward him as [he had been] yesterday and the day before. (Bereishis 31:1-2)

The truth is, this was not EXCESSIVE anti-Semitism. It didn’t have to be. Ya’akov was one of the few people who understood it, what it was and where it came from. He knew that as much as Lavan and his sons couldn’t stand him, and had to restrain themselves from harming him, it was really G–D Who had His hand on the valve of anti-Semitism.
In fact, that was EXACTLY how Ya’akov knew that it was G–D Who controlled the flow of hatred towards him. He was never fooled by the civil behavior of his father-in-law and brothers-in-law. He had no pretenses about their motivations and plans, which is why he knew that G–D was the One who had been keeping them at bay for the past 20 years.
Therefore, when Ya’akov Avinu saw that civility begin to dissipate, he knew it wasn’t just Lavan having a bad day. It was Lavan being himself, which meant that G–D was stepping back somewhat, from overturning Lavan’s inherent hateful nature. Ya’akov comprehended that it meant that history was at a turning point, and that it required a change in his own plans as well.
This is why on a dime, he decided to leave Lavan’s home with all that he had. Anti-Ya’akovism meant that G–D was saying that his work was coming to an end, he had no more business there, and therefore no longer required any special Divine intervention to protect him. If he stayed, Ya’akov understood, he was on his own.
It is incomprehensible how, as a nation that has experienced so much anti-Semitism since its inception, that we do not spend time on this part of the Ya’akov story. The Talmud says that Mt. Sinai is called what it is because sinah—hatred of the Jewish people began there (Talmud 89a). Should we not spend some serious time understanding what this means, and how it can affect us throughout history, especially since the Torah tells us to (Devarim 32:7)?
How is it possible that a people with such a tortured history can take that history so lightly? One of the main lessons of the Holocaust is how man can be so “civilized,” and yet so murderous when it comes to the Jews. How can we turn our backs on such an important survival message?
Even secular Jews. Just take a look at history. Secular Jews may distance themselves from their religious brothers and sisters, but the anti-Semites of history haven’t. A Jew is a Jew is a Jew, they continue to say. When the Christian reporter called it a “Jew coup” against President Trump, he did not make a point of distinguishing which Jews he meant because in his mind, we’re ALL the same.
He’s not alone. We’re also all the same in G–D’s mind, so-to-speak. In terms of halachic culpability, it will depend upon what a person could have known about Torah but didn’t. But in terms of who belongs to His nation, it is all of us, and we really have no way, short of prophecy, to know who belongs more than whom.
This is why when they have come for us, they have come for ALL of us altogether. They don’t come on behalf of themselves, as much as they think they do. G–D will deal with them for who they are and what they do, but let that not cloud the absolute reality. Anti-semitism is not a form of racism. It is a means of Divine communication. When it happens, we’re best to give an ear to G–D, not to the anti-Semites. When it gets to the point that we have to watch out for THEM, it’s because we didn’t turn an ear to G–D when we should have, as Ya’akov did in this week’s parsha.

For those who might be interested, “In Discussion” is a series of books on the weekly Torah portion. However, as the title makes clear, discussion is the means to make the point. The facts are true and the insights are real and fascinating. But the “cover story,” though often based upon true accounts, has been imagined to hold the interest of the reader while teaching about the weekly Torah portion. Based upon the feedback of readers, the idea works well. You can now purchase the entire softcover set of five books, Bereishis through Devarim, at 20% off the retail price (softcover: $70.75 less 20% equals $56.60 plus $15.00 shipping) or in PDF format ($29.75 less 20% equals 23.80). Rabbi Kahana – Vayaitzai: Polar Opposites

Polar Opposites

ויצא יעקב מבאר שבע וילך חרנה וגו’

AND Ya’akov DEPARTED FROM BEER SHEVA AND WENT TOWARDS CHARAN
The report of Ya’akov’s departure from Beer Sheva is seemingly superfluous when the important factor in the now developing episode is that Ya’akov went to Charan. Rashi explains that the Torah is informing us that not only does the arrival of a tzaddik leave a deep spiritual impression on the environment, but so too does his departure leave a deep spiritual abyss in the people. Ya’akov’s departure from Beer Sheva and Eretz Yisrael left a gap which would not be filled until his return 22 years later.
The leader of the Williamsburg Satmar community, as apart from his brother, the leader of the Monroe Kiryat Yoel Satmar community, arrived in the holy land. Ten days later he departed. The only newsworthy item being that he distributed five million dollars to organizations that claim that they do not accept Zionist government funding (I am skeptical).
There was no spiritual message that this leader of many thousands of anti-Medina Chareidim delivered on his arrival to anyone outside of his limited flock of adherents; however, on his departure he left a deep impression on those who, for a variety of reasons, are far from Torah observance. They were plunged even deeper in the negation of anything that smacks of kedusha and Yiddishkeit.
Everything and everyone that Hashem brings into the world serves a purpose, significant or not. So, what does the anti-Medina and anti-Zionist message of Satmar (a town in Hungary which means Saint Mary) accomplish to serve our generation?
I suggest:
The episode of the Meraglim (scouts) who refused to enter Eretz Yisrael seems a bit bizarre to be true. These 12 men were the best that Am Yisrael had, at the time. They were the tribal leaders who personally experienced the wonders of Hashem at the ten plagues; the splitting of Yam Suf; as well as the death of the entire Egyptian army that was about to pounce on the newly freed slaves but ended with them at the bottom of the sea. The scouts stood at the foot of Mount Sinai listening to the call of Hashem in the first two commandments. Nevertheless, when they returned from scouting the land, there was an about-face that affected six hundred thousand of the nation’s men between the ages of 20 and 60; convincing them to rebel against Moshe and Hashem.
It seems implausible that such a departure from the truth could come about with men who were so spiritually gifted and maintained such venerable positions in the national hierarchy. It was totally irrational that men who were looked upon with reverence and saw before their very eyes that Hashem was with the nation at every turn, could suddenly deny the reality of life that was theirs.
Similarly, the Satmar point of view is bankrupt; but the followers are blind like in the story of the “King’s clothing”, when the little boy called out “look, the King is naked”.
The Satmar and others who share his views, cling to the debunked idea that the Jewish people are prohibited from raising even a finger towards what is known as “auto-emancipation”; but must remain in galut until Hashem calls for us to return. No Medina, no mass aliya, no political activity towards self-rule. Just eat, drink, be happy and make money until Hashem sends his emissary to whisk us off to the holy land, or until the goyin send us up the chimneys of their death camps – whichever comes first. And preferably we should lie on our backs and hand the land over to those who would continue the Nazi mass murder of our people.
Hashem did not send a miracle maker to the generation of Ezra, yet they returned to rebuild the second Bet Hamikdash, which stood for 420 years.
Jews became politically active towards the goal of national independence towards the end of the 19th century, and the Medina was established in 1948. Had we begun our trek towards self-rule 100 years earlier, the Medina would have come about in 1848 and we would be today not 10 million in the world, but 100 million Jews!
Medinat Yisrael with its 7 million Jews and its unprecedented military victories and scientific, economic and spiritual development could never have come about without the hand of HaShem at the helm. Never has a nation returned to its ancient homeland after thousands of years of being away, as we have. The great tragedy of the Satmar and their influence in the Chareidi world is their inability to admit that they erred. They will continue to oppose even the Mashiach if he comes without a shtreimel, speaking Hungarian Yiddish.
I often speak to people who follow the Satmar dead-end and I go away with a sick feeling. When bringing up the agony of the Shoah and the almost immediate establishment of the Medina, how many times have I heard from them that there is no reason to discuss the Shoah nor the Medina, because it was clear that the Shoah was decreed by Hashem, and the Medina is the will of the Satan.
Indeed, these people confirm that the episode occurred.

An Unbridgeable Wedge

The Chareidim who long to see the negation of the Medina take me back to the mindset of one of my rabbis at the Rabbi Jacob Joseph Yeshiva High School, in New York.
The leading yeshiva high schools established a basketball league. For three of the four years I studied there, I was on the RJJ team and enjoyed every moment – win or lose.
This particular rabbi opposed our yeshiva being part of the league and was especially unhappy with me. He claimed that the league was fargoyisht (for goyim) and every member on the team was a “loser”. His problem with me was that I was a “player” and also a “learner,” and upon graduation even received the Talmud award.
We played once every two weeks. That rabbi who I really liked and maintained a relationship with far after I left the yeshiva when we both made aliya, he to Bnei Brak and I to Yerushalayim, was always informed as to the league’s progress. Whenever we won a game, he would start out the morning class by saying “the yeshiva lost it”, and when we lost, he would say “the yeshiva won it”.
Back to the anti-Medina Chareidim. They rejoice at the Medina’s failures and are saddened at its triumphs. I am happy to report that they are much more saddened than joyful, for the Medina’s successes far outweigh our failures.
In conclusion: Rav Nachman of Breslaw said, “The entire world is a very narrow bridge”. Our Jewish world is even narrower: where with one false move one can find himself suffocated by the obsolete dogmas of yesteryear which history has long ago passed over, or by the intoxicating freedoms of super liberalism which incarcerate the conscience and equate immoral unnatural behavior on the same level as the great ethical ideals of Yehadut.
Our parasha reveals a lesson in human behavior: brothers, even twins can be polar opposites, apart in the world of ideas. Unfortunately, the realities of life often create an unbridgeable wedge between them. Case in point: Nine Satmars (and some other Chareidi groups) would never include a religious-Zionist talmid chacham to complete their minion of ten. Nine religious-Zionists would always invite them, but they would not come.
Shabbat Shalom,

Israeli Student Scores Fall in International Test, While Arabs’ Scores Drop the Most

The gaps between Jewish and Arab students were particularly glaring, with the Arab failure rate more than double the Jewish one

The above "Haaretz" newspaper headline is at the top of the news today particularly in Leftists print and electronic media. At first glance, this is yet another example of institutionalized Israeli (Jewish) discrimination against Israel's Arab population. How is it that the Arab sector is so far behind the Jewish one?

That is indeed a very interesting question.
The obvious accusation would be discriminatory funding for Arab education in Israel.

Well, that is not it. Budgets for Arab education has been conspicuously very high - higher than Jewish students per capita.Arab participation in higher education had risen much in recent years. The Arab enrollment in the Technion and Haifa University is indicative of this trend; around thirty percent of the students are Arab. Other universities are similar.Remember, the Arab population of Israel is around twenty one percent.

Contrast this with the ‘blazing’ headline in the JPost:
“Deficient education and demographics —Massive reform - with no more exemptions for Haredim - is urgently needed
(Skewed opinion, prejudicial?)

Indeed they are given preferential consideration in order to raise the number of Arab students and to maintain their performance.

In other words, they are pushed into the universities. So why indeed do the Arab children fall behind their Jewish counterparts in Israel?

Israel as a country falls in the middle range of the eighty countries in the "OECD" group - the more advanced countries of the world.Israel would rate much higher on this list if not for the Arab sector that brings down the average level of Israeli academic achievement.

Let us take a look around the Arab world. None of the many Arab countries come close to Israel's ranking and achievement even with the Arab sector weighing it down. One wonders, is there something about Arab society as reflected in all the Arab countries that do not lend themselves to academic achievement.Perhaps the various political structures or investment in education or physical facilities in the Arab lands may shed light on the answer?

There are some poor and there are some super-rich Arab countries where funding is not an issue; similar to the huge budgets allocated in Israel for the Arab sector.Yet the Arab world lies at the bottom of the scale of academic achievement as do Israeli Arabs.

Isn't it interesting that in every part of the world, Jews are at the top of academic achievement?
Percentages of Jewish success in every population (if allowed to compete) is simply off the charts. This is truly a unique phenomenon today as it is historically. Simply some parts of the world are known for intellectual ability while others are less.

The case at hand is the Arab world but there are others.

Repeated studies have shed light on the IQ levels of different ethnic groups. Jews are always on or near the top.

This is what research has found. It simply validates what is clearly observable in our daily lives. The "People of the Book" are indeed just that. Studies validate it.

Maybe a part of the huge amount of money is being misspent in the Arab sector. This would not be an exception to the rule. Perhaps the famous patrimony, clan interests, and corruption are where some of the funds disappear?

Maybe?
Perhaps the culture of a zeal for learning for which the Jewish people are famous is less pronounced in Arab culture.

Maybe the Jewish parent has something to do with results?
Or maybe Jews are just smart?

Did I really say that?

Mosque Being Renovated at Entrance to the OLD CITY

'Muslim Provocation in the Jewish Quarter’

arutzsheva: Jewish residents of the Old City of Jerusalem are protesting the renovation of a mosque in the Jewish Quarter which has been out of use for nearly a century, calling the decision to put the mosque back into use a deliberate provocation.

The Sidna Omar Mosque was built in the 14th century, next to the Ramban synagogue, which was built in the 13th century, on Jewish-owned property, after the owner converted to Islam. The mosque has been out of use since the early 20th century.

Last month, however, the Jordanian-based Waqf, or Islamic trust, which maintains Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, began renovation work on the Sidna Omar Mosque, prompting fears among Jewish residents that the Waqf is looking to reopen the mosque after nearly a century, despite the fact that there is no Muslim population in the vicinity of the mosque.
  • This will create such tension and terror especially when Jewish attendance at the HURVA might coincide with “their” activities in said ‘mosque’ next door!
  • Can you see the thousands and thousands of arabs emptying into the courtyard?
  • Imagine the kosher eating places being pelted with rocks after “their” war-shiping!
  • Watch when both edifices empty out at the same time! Clashes predicted!
  • Why does the Jerusalem municipality and the Old City representatives get together to PREVENT TERROR? (this spells the end of this mayor’s reign)
  • No one dismisses this as nothing more than a PROVOCATION to DISRUPT Jewish residency in the OLD CITY!
  • Can one imagine the loudspeakers daily blasting at 5 am?
SOMEONE HAS TO PUT A STOP TO THIS

(w/out explosives)

Speaking with Arutz Sheva, Efraim Holtzberg, who has lived in the Jewish Quarter for four decades, called the move a “provocation” aimed at disrupting Jewish life in the area.

“The opening of the mosque in the Jewish Quarter is the most flagrant violation of the status quo,” said Holtzberg. “The Jewish Quarter is the top Jewish tourist attraction in Jerusalem, with two million tourists each year. Why violate the balance in the Quarter?”

“For almost a century the mosque was abandoned and was not used,” continued Holtzberg. “Putting it back into use is a Muslim provocation. Bringing it back into use would draw large numbers of Arabs into the Jewish Quarter on Friday [the Muslim holy day] and especially on Ramadan, and [Jewish] residents of the Quarter would have to get increased security, and there is always the concern that terror could raise its head.”

“Unfortunately, the government and the City of Jerusalem are asleep at the wheel on this. Just recently, a plan was approved for the Waqf to open a big Islamic center at the end of HaKotel Street which would seriously harm the character of the Jewish Quarter.”

But Shoshana Selavan, chairwoman of the Jewish Quarter administration, said that a senior Waqf official had assured her that despite the renovations, the Sidna Omar Mosque would not be opened for mass prayers, and that the renovations were needed after the building suffered water damage from last year’s rains.

The Sidna Omar Mosque is not the only one in the Jewish Quarter to be renovated, however.

Residents of the Jewish Quarter also expressed concern earlier this year over plans to reopen another long-abandoned mosque, this time on Chabad Street, at the entrance to the Jewish Quarter.

Penina Seidel, the wife of the well-known Jewish outreach organizer Jeff Seidel, has lived in the area for 36 years, and also expressed concerns that the reopening of the mosque could make life difficult in the Jewish Quarter.

“Obviously there are mosques everywhere in the Old City of Jerusalem, we aren’t debating the fact that the city is holy to everyone. But this mosque is located right at the entrance to the Jewish Quarter. After so many years of being out of use, the [mosque] is now in the advanced stages of [renovation], all they have left to do is install the speakers.”

“We see this as an infringement on our privacy and the independent life of the Jewish community in the quarter. The authorities haven’t taken any of our appeals seriously, they just direct us from one office to another.”

'We embark on extensive economic campaign after terror operatives all over world.’

Defense Minister Naftali Bennett visited Hatzor Air Force Base today with Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin and with participation of Hatzor Base Commander Brigadier General Brigadier General Nir Barkan and other senior officials.

Bennett spoke of his decision to sign a first executive order of its kind aimed at limiting economic activity of individual terror operatives and carrying out "targeted economic thwarting".

"Activity against terrorists isn't only in the field but also through the pocket," the Defense Minister explained. "Today we embark on an extensive economic campaign after terror operatives all over the world.

"Everyone who harms us, we will chase him, whether it is at the ATM that won't give him money, or at the airport when they won't board, or at the entrance to a country that refuses them entry. We'll chase the terrorists so it becomes unwise to kill Israelis."

The Defense Minister also addressed Iranian establishment in Syria making it clear that Israel would fight against it. "We have excellent fighters, pilots, and soldiers. The State of Israel is determined to face the Iranian effort to build on our borders. We won't accept any new neighbors on the borders of the State of Israel."

UPDATE Bennet Signs Executive Order = Economic Warfare Against Terrorists

Defense Ministry to use Economic Warfare Against Terrorists

[this man means business and its “good for the Jews”. This is leadership quality]

For the first time ever, the State of Israel will use targeted economic sanctions against individual terrorists around the world, the Defense Ministry announced Tuesday afternoon.

Defense Minister Naftali Bennett (New Right) signed an administrative Executive Order Tuesday aimed at restricting the financial activities of terrorists. The order, which is the first of its kind signed in Israel, restricts terrorists’ access to their assets and ability to manage their finances both in Israel and abroad. arutzsheva. The order placed sanctions on Mohammad Jamil, who heads the Arab Human Rights Organization in the US. This will be enacted against other activists.

Knesset Legal Advisor against Bennett's appointment as DM

arutzsheva:  Knesset Legal Advisor against Bennett's appointment as Defense Minister

Knesset Legal Advisor Eyal Yinon believes that the process in which Naftali Bennett was appointed to the position of Defense Minister was flawed and contrary to the Basic Law, the Globes newspaper reported on Monday.

According to Yinon's legal opinion, which was submitted in response to a petition in the Supreme Court against the appointment [who filed the petition?], the government had a duty to obtain the Knesset's approval for the appointment.

Despite the opinion, however, Yinon requests that the Supreme Court not accept the petition and order Bennett's appointment to be canceled, but only apply his interpretation  of the law from here on.  [What exactly does this mean?]

Yinon said that the dismissal of Bennett as Defense Minister should not be ordered because his appointment was based on the Attorney General's interpretation of the law and which approved of the appointment because the issue had not yet been discussed in a legal ruling and "since the appointment relied on previous appointments made in a similar manner.”

[is this not the workings of Shamayim?]

Jew Hatred Has Nearly Reached Pre-Nazi Europe Proportions

Have all of NY's elected officials gone AWOL as Jew hatred soars?
[?where are all those New York’s democrats?]
The stark realization is that Jew hatred has reached the kind of epidemiological proportions that are tantamount to those of pre-Nazi Europe.

As the year 2019 draws to a close in the Gregorian calendar, there is no doubt that it will be remembered as the year that global anti-Semitism dominated the headlines and sent a chill down collective Jewish spines. Suffice it to say, anti-Semitism has been an endemic part of the Jewish experience since time immemorial, as the blood stained pages of Jewish history tragically illustrate.

In the fraught times in which we live, the stark realization is that Jew hatred has reached the kind of epidemiological proportions that are tantamount to those of pre-Nazi Europe.

In 2017, there were more than 200 reported anti-Semitic incidents in New York City, according to the annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents conducted by the Anti-Defamation League, representing a 90 percent increase from 2016. In 2018, most reported anti-Semitic assaults in the city took place in Brooklyn, and in 2019 this same borough has seen an alarming increase in the frequency and aggressiveness of visceral Jew hatred.

In the last several weeks alone, Orthodox Jews have been harassed and assaulted in the Borough Park and Williamsburg sections of Brooklyn, with the latest attack coming on Monday night, November 25th in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.

Two yeshiva students were assaulted by a group of rowdy teens at around 6 pm outside of the Chovevei Torah building on Eastern Parkway, according to the CrownHeights. info web site. One of the two bochurim had his hat knocked off during the incident, which thankfully passed without any physical injuries. A passerby called Crown Heights Shomrim, who were able to track the teens to the Albany House Building Projects just a few blocks away. A police report was filed with the 77th precinct, whose representatives came to visit the yeshiva on Tuesday to speak with the bochurim.

In a separate incident, only a few days ago, an Orthodox man was sucker punched by a 19-year old minority young person in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. This, of course, follows months of reported anti-Semitic attacks targeting clearly identifiable Jews in the borough that boasts the largest Jewish population in the city.

And lest we be reminded that each day the scourge of anti-Semitism is reported at colleges and universities across the city and state. Last week, it was reported that the US Department of Education has launched an investigation of anti-Semitism at New York University, based on the complaint submitted by Adela Cojab, a 22-year old senior. Her complaint mainly centered around a group called Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), an on-campus pro-Palestinian group. According to the complaint, Adela has said that SJP has created a “hostile atmosphere” for Jewish students, and that NYU has allowed “extreme anti-Semitism” to thrive.

On November 24th, JTA reported that a professor at Syracuse University was threatened by an anonymous email containing anti-Semitic language and Holocaust references.

The email was sent to Genevieve García de Müeller, a professor of writing, rhetoric and composition, the campus student newspaper, The Daily Orange, reported. The subject line of the email was “JEW.” It told her to “get in the oven where you belong” and ended with an anti-Semitic slur, according to the newspaper, which did not disclose the slur. Mueller is Jewish and Mexican.

This of course follows a horrifying wave of Jew hatred and racism at the university that boasts a reputation of attracting students the world over.

A white supremacist manifesto was apparently airdropped to students at a Syracuse University library a day after a fraternity was suspended for alleged racism, and multiple instances of racist graffiti have been reported to campus authorities.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo blasted Syracuse University chancellor Kent Syverud, saying that none of his actions to combat hate crimes on campus 'instills confidence" in the community.

"The hateful activities at Syracuse University are most disturbing, not only to the Syracuse University community, but to the greater community of New York," Cuomo said in a statement. "They have not been handled in a manner that reflects this state's aggressive opposition to such odious, reckless, and reprehensible behavior. That these actions should happen on the campus of a leading New York university makes this situation even worse.”

Isn't it interesting that when white supremacism is at the focus of a deluge of anti-Semitism and racism, it commands the strident and vocal indignation of our elected officials, but when the perpetrators and purveyors of anti-Semitism are members of minorities, we do not even hear a whisper of angst in the public square.

While we sit in abject fear each day that yet another form of anti-Semitic harassment or assault will emerge on our television screens or will be splashed across the publications that we read, we must take note when such crimes occur, because a thorough and rigorous investigation is clearly mandated.

And that brings to the role, or lack thereof, of the New York State Attorney General. It doesn't take much to know that the rudimentary function of the Attorney General is to launch meticulous probes in order to root out the pernicious source or sources from which criminal behavior is emanating, to find out who the suspects are and what their motive is.

Suffice it to say that Attorney General Letitia James has been essentially mute when it pertains to attacks on Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn or Monsey and she has done nothing in terms of sending out her cracker jack team of investigators to seek out the perpetrators of anti-Semitism on university campuses across the state.

What Ms. James has been doing however is also quite noteworthy. Last week, it was reported that she announced that her office has filed suit against the landmark B&H Photo and Video Electronics Store in Manhattan. She erroneously alleges that the store withheld approximately $7.3 million in tax revenue from New York State over 13 years.

In a statement issued to the media, spokesman for B&H Photo, Jeff Gerstel, said the state’s lawsuit was without merit. “B&H is not a big box store or a faceless chain; we are a New York institution, having operated here for nearly 50 years with a stellar reputation. The tax department has done countless audits and never once – not a single time – mentioned this widespread industry practice. B&H has done nothing wrong and it is outrageous that the AG has decided to attack a New York company that employs thousands of New Yorkers while leaving the national online and retail behemoths unchallenged.”

For those not in the know, B&H Photo is owned and operated by Orthodox Jews. Its employees are parents of large families and they depend on their incomes to sustain themselves and pay yeshiva tuitions for their children.

Sources who monitor the press releases routinely sent out to the media by Ms. James' office have also taken note of the fact that Ms. James consistently targets Orthodox Jewish landlords. Utilizing the underhanded subterfuge of positing herself as a "champion of the underdog" Ms. James uses her position to spew forth spurious allegations that not only severely tarnish the reputations of these landlords but serve to destroy their businesses and livelihood.

While I ask my readers to draw their own conclusions based on the facts presented, it is quite apparent to me that Ms. James has her own agenda. As the old adage goes, "If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it is duck."

Defense Minister Naftali Bennett on Iran and A New Neighborhood in Hevron

Naftali Bennett Addresses the Persians and the World’s Nations
(It finally rained a little early this morning)

[things are getting accomplished under the new DM.
what was Netanyahu afraid of all these years?]

Naftali Bennett approves new Jewish Neighborhood in Hebron.

(Historic Jewish marketplace to become home to Jews again following defense minister's order)

Defense Minister Naftali Bennett approved on Monday the planning of a new Jewish neighborhood in the wholesale market complex in Hebron. JPost

The market buildings will be demolished as part of the construction of the new neighborhood. New stores will be built in their place, though the rights of the Palestinians to the properties on the ground floors will remain theirs.

The location of the new neighborhood will create a sort of territorial continuum from the Cave of the Patriarchs to the Abraham Avinu neighborhood and will double the number of Jews in the city.

The decision was reached after numerous discussions between Bennett and the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, the Public Service Administration, the Shin Bet and other security agencies.

The market area was owned by Jews until the 1929 Palestinian Riots. The lands were since abandoned and therein taken by the Jordanian king, until 1967 when they were returned to Israel.

The Hebron municipality built a wholesale marketplace on the land, which was active until the 90's. Bennett ordered that all property above the ground-floor marketplace must be "returned to Jewish hands," according to a statement by Bennett's spokesperson.

The Jewish community in Hebron lauded the announcement, saying that it thanked Bennett “from the bottom of our hearts” for a decision which they said “will restore Jewish life to Jewish property in Hebron.”

The community added in its statement to the press that “removing the land of those who were murdered from the hands of the murderous mayor of Hebron” is a matter of “historic justice” for which the Jewish people had been waiting for 90 years.”

(former IDF Benayahu said it would take many, many years . . .. that’s because of the “stalling” tactics of the Israeli inept bureaucracy = the arabs get buildings up in no time!)

These comments were a reference to the 1929 Hebron massacre in which 67 Jews were murdered and the land where the new neighborhood is to be built eventually seized by the Jordanians and used to establish a wholesale market.

The community also thanked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former justice minister Ayelet Shaked, and former defense minister Avigdor Liberman for their help in bringing about the authorization for the new neighborhood.

THE DRIVER SHOULD BE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER ON THE EVIDENCE OF WITNESSES – A CAR IS A WEAPON
(regardless of any motive)

The Otzma Yehudit party called on the police this morning to investigate the fatal accident in which Tzipi Rimmel and her newborn baby Noam Rachel were killed to determine whether it was an Islamist terrorist attack.

According to the party, since the early morning hours, testimonies from various people present at the site indicate that the driver who struck Rimmel, who is an Arab, was traveling at high speed and deliberately did not stop despite the red traffic light and cars waiting at the intersection.

"We urge the police to investigate in depth the motives of the offending driver and examine whether there were no nationalist motives in his unruly leadership and whether he had any intentions of seizing the opportunity of vehicles waiting at the junction for a green light to kill Jews," Otzma Yehudit said.

Attorney Itamar Ben Gvir, one of the leaders of the party, wrote on Twitter: "This is not an 'accident.' It looks like murder! “

One Israeli is dead and two others were injured after they were hit by a bus at around 3:30 pm Friday in Casablanca.
(a reckless is also a WEAPON)

The victim, a student of the Shuva Yisrael Yeshiva, was crushed to death between two buses, according to reports by the Hebrew-language Ynet site and Israel’s Channel 12 television news.

Terrorism has not yet been ruled out; police arrested both bus drivers for questioning in order to rule out the possibility there was a nationalist background to the incident.

The Israelis were on their way to prayers and a celebratory meal for Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto marking the passing of his grandfather.

Former MK Oren Hazan as well as hundreds of other Israelis, including prominent business owners and close associates of the rabbi, were present for the event.

The group was exiting the building and preparing to board the two buses waiting outside when the driver of one of the buses reportedly accelerated and hit the three Israelis who were crossing the road.

Those who were present at the scene told Israeli media,

“It didn’t look like an accident.”

What the Torah Sources Tell us About Mashiach Ben Yosef

Gathered are some writings about Mashiach Ben Yosef and Moshiach Ben David
Taken from Torah MiTzion and Mi Yodeya

It is true, though, that the Rambam, in his description of Moshiach, his prerequisites, accomplishments, etc. (Laws of Kings chs. 11-12) omits the concept of Moshiach ben Yosef. This indicates that he considers this to be one of those aspects of the Final Redemption that are possible but not essential. Which means that if there is a person who fits his criteria for a potential Moshiach ("a king from the House of David who delves into Torah and observes mitzvos like his ancestor David...," ibid. 11:4) - then the fact that there wasn't a (known) Moshiach ben Yosef beforehand is immaterial.

_________________________________

Just to note, Rambam (Mishna Torah; Hil. Melachim 12:2) writes that one should not over-contemplate the events that are to come about with the redemption, for the prophecies are intentionally vague and no one will know for certain their meaning until they come to be realized. Even the Rabbis of the Talmud only said about the redemption and the Messiah what they could glean and derive from the verses of the Prophets, but did not have any sort of absolute knowledge or tradition as to what would happen.

That said, the Talmud (Succah 52a and 52b) does mention a figure known as "Mashiach ben Yosef", and does interpret a couple of verses in Zecharia in light of his existence. (In doing so, it is made clear that he will die in the apocalypse.) Who is this figure? It is not exactly clear.

R' Saadya Gaon (Emunot V'deot 8:6) seems to believe that his existence is only necessary if the Jews are not ready for the Messiah and need to do t'shuva to merit the redemption. [It is a common idea that the Messiah will come either if the Jews are meritorious, or if they are not, at a predetermined "deadline". R' Saadya is referring to if the Messiah must come at the "deadline", and the Jews need preparation to be redeemed.] In this case, the Mashiach ben Yosef will lead the Jews back to God's good graces allowing them to be worthy of redemption, and later he will die in battle (of Gog and Magog), allowing for the succession of the "real" Messiah, Mashiach ben David.

Abarbanel and Malbim, in their commentaries to the Prophets, treat the existence of Mashiach ben Yosef as a "kabbala" (tradition) known to Chazal from the prophets themselves. (See Abarbanel to Ezekiel 32 and Malbim to Ezekiel 37:19.) In their opinion, he will be (as indicated by his name) from the tribe of Yosef, or at least from one of the ten "lost tribes", who were exiled by Sancheriv. He will be instrumental in uniting the ten tribes with the rest of the Jews in exile, as well as uniting the Jews in exile themselves, and leading them in the final war leading to the Redemption, thereupon dying in battle.

________________________________________

It is worth noting that according to the Vilna Gaon, as suggested by his students in the book Kol HaTor, Mashiach ben Yosef will not die in the final battle, rather he will live in the merit of his significant role in the gathering in of the exiles and rebuilding Jerusalem @jake If you are interested in how he learns the Gemara in Sukka.

From Chabad.org [footnotes can be found here Chabad.org]

Jewish tradition speaks of two redeemers, each one called Mashiach. Both are involved in ushering in the Messianic era. They are Mashiach ben David and Mashiach ben Yossef.1

The term Mashiach unqualified always refers to Mashiach ben David (Mashiach the descendant of David) of the tribe of Judah. He is the actual (final) redeemer who shall rule in the Messianic age. All that was said in our text relates to him.

Mashiach ben Yossef (Mashiach the descendant of Joseph) of the tribe of Ephraim (son of Joseph), is also referred to as Mashiach ben Ephrayim, Mashiach the descendant of Ephraim.2 He will come first, before the final redeemer, and later will serve as his viceroy.3

The essential task of Mashiach ben Yossef is to act as precursor to Mashiach ben David: he will prepare the world for the coming of the final redeemer. Different sources attribute to him different functions, some even charging him with tasks traditionally associated with Mashiach ben David (such as the ingathering of the exiles, the rebuilding of the Bet Hamikdash, and so forth).4

The principal and final function ascribed to Mashiach ben Yossef is of political and military nature. He shall wage war against the forces of evil that oppress Israel. More specifically, he will do battle against Edom, the descendants of Esau.5 Edom is the comprehensive designation of the enemies of Israel,6 and it will be crushed through the progeny of Joseph. Thus it was prophesied of old, "The House of Jacob will be a fire and the House of Joseph a flame, and the House of Esau for stubble.." (Obadiah 1:18): "the progeny of Esau shall be delivered only into the hands of the progeny of Joseph."7

This ultimate confrontation between Joseph and Esau is alluded already in the very birth of Joseph when his mother Rachel exclaimed, "G‑d has taken away my disgrace" (Genesis 30:23): with prophetic vision she foresaw that an "anointed savior" will descend from Joseph and that he will remove the disgrace of Israel.8 In this context she called his name "Yossef, saying 'yossef Hashem - may G‑d add to me ben acher (lit., another son), i.e., ben acharono shel olam - one who will be at the end of the world's time,'9 from which it follows that 'meshu'ach milchamah - one anointed for battle' will descend from Joseph."10

The immediate results of this war11 will be disastrous: Mashiach ben Yossef will be killed. This is described in the prophecy of Zechariah, who says of this tragedy that "they shall mourn him as one mourns for an only child." (Zechariah 12:10).12 His death will be followed by a period of great calamities. These new tribulations shall be the final test for Israel, and shortly thereafter Mashiach ben David shall come, avenge his death, resurrect him, and inaugurate the Messianic era of everlasting peace and bliss.13

This, in brief, is the general perception of the "second Mashiach," the descendant of Joseph through the tribe of Ephraim.

Quite significantly, R. Saadiah Gaon (one of the few to elaborate on the role of Mashiach ben Yossef) notes that this sequence is not definite but contingent! Mashiach ben Yossef will not have to appear before Mashiach ben David, nor will the activities attributed to him or his death have to occur. All depends on the spiritual condition of the Jewish people at the time the redemption is to take place:

The essential function of Mashiach ben Yossef is to prepare Israel for the final redemption, to put them into the proper condition in order to clear the way for Mashiach ben David to come. Of that ultimate redemption it is said, that if Israel repent (return to G‑d) they shall be redeemed immediately (even before the predetermined date for Mashiach's coming). If they will not repent and thus become dependent on the final date, "the Holy One, blessed be He, will set up a ruler over them, whose decrees shall be as cruel as Haman's, thus causing Israel to repent, and thereby bringing them back to the right path."14 In other words, if Israel shall return to G‑d on their own and make themselves worthy of the redemption, there is no need for the trials and tribulations associated with the above account of events related to Mashiach ben Yossef. Mashiach ben David will come directly and redeem us.15

Moreover, even if there be a need for the earlier appearance of Mashiach ben Yossef, the consequences need not be as severe as described. Our present prayers and meritorious actions can mitigate these. R. Isaac Luria (Ari-zal) notes that the descendant of Joseph, by being the precursor of the ultimate Mashiach, is in effect kissey David, the "seat" or "throne" of David, i.e., of Mashiach. Thus when praying in the daily Amidah, "speedily establish the throne of Your servant David," one should consider that this refers to Mashiach ben Yossef and beseech G‑d that he should not die in the Messianic struggle.16 As all prayers, this one, too, will have its effect.

It follows, then, that all the above is not an essential or unavoidable part of the Messianic redemption that we await. Indeed, it - (and the same may be said of the climactic war of Gog and Magog) - may occur (or may have occured already!) in modified fashion.17 This may explain why Rambam does not mention anything about Mashiach ben Yossef. R. Saadiah Gaon18 and R. Hai Gaon,19 as well as a good number of commentators, do refer to him briefly or at length. In view of the divergent Midrashim and interpretations on this subject it is practically impossible to present a more definitive synopsis that would go far beyond the above. Thus it is wisest to cite and follow R. Chasdai Crescas who states that "no certain knowledge can be derived from the interpretations of the prophecies about Mashiach ben Yossef, nor from the statements about him by some of the Geonim;" there is no point, therefore, in elaborating on the subject.20
