The Third Temple

And it shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the house of Hashem shall be established at the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all of the nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we shall walk in His paths: for out of Zion shall go forth Torah, and the word of God from Jerusalem. (Isaiah 2:2-3).

Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go for yourself into the land of Moriah (Genesis 22:2)

Upon this verse Rashi comments that the land of Moriah is Jerusalem. Our Rabbis explained: Jerusalem is called Moriah because from there הוראה, instruction, went forth to Israel.

Solomon then began building the Temple of Hashem in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where He had appeared to his father David. (II Chronicles 3:1)

The house of Hashem that the prophet Isaiah speaks of is the Third Temple. Isaiah's vision places the Third Temple as a place for instruction and the bringing forth God's word. The physical place of the Third Temple will be in the Old City of Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where Abraham was commanded to offer Isaac and where the First and the Second Temples stood. This is the holy place where G-d's indwelling presence, the Shechinah, will be consciously present. This is the place where Heaven touches Earth and where Earth touches the Heavens. It will be a house of blessing for all mankind for there all mankind will experience and see the physical evidence of G-d's Al-mighty absolute presence.

At the time when the Third Temple will be constructed, the Messiah will come. The Messiah will be a descendant of King David, a son of David. He will be the master teacher of the Torah and its commandments. It is he who will bequeath these ethical values to the human race. It is he who will succeed in establishing the earthly Kingdom of God and who will aid in bringing about the collective repentance of man. In the Messianic Era, justice will prevail on earth:

And with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked... and righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins. and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. (Isaiah 11:4-5)

Bitachon - Trust in God

Shabbat Shalom

Trust in Hashem, in the Good Times
and in the Challenging Times
by Rabbi Pinchas Winston

  • Blessed is the man who trusts in God, then God will be his security.  (Yirmiyahu 7:7)
As the prophet teaches, God will not be someone’s security until the person already trusts in God, which does not mean turning to God only during times of trouble. And, certainly if one does turn to God at a difficult time, he has to be careful how he does it:
  • Because Yosef placed his trust in him that he should remember him he was destined to remain in prison for two [extra] years. Thus it says, “Happy is the man who makes God his trust and does not turn to the arrogant” (Tehillim 40:5); he does not trust in the Egyptians who are called “arrogant.” (Rashi, Bereishit 40:23)
It is unlikely that Rashi faults Yosef for turning to the wrong kind of human savior. Rather, the reference to the arrogant is not only to the Egyptians, but to anyone who shares the same ideology as the Egyptians, expressed here, and succinctly, by their supreme ruler:
  • Pharaoh said, “Who is Hashem, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know Hashem, nor will I let Israel go.” (Shemos 5:2)
Now, it was not that Pharaoh did not believe in God at all. Rashi already told us that the entire reason for drowning the children was to beat God at His own game. As Pharaoh knew, God works measure-for-measure (Sanhedrin 90a), and since God promised not to bring a flood again against mankind, Pharaoh used water to kill the male children.1

Then what was Pharaoh talking about? Pharaoh was making a distinction between Elokim and Hashem, between God Who works through nature to fulfill His will, and God Who, on occasion, even works above nature to bring about the historical results He desires. Moshe Rabbeinu came and threatened Pharaoh in the Name of the latter. Pharaoh balked in the Name of the former.

In other words, “Elokim” is the Name of God when He works in history b’Hashgochah Klallis, on the level of Divine Providence that allows people to even believe that Creation is on automatic pilot, or worse, that God doesn’t exist at all. It is the level of Providence referred to as “hester panim,” the hiding of God’s face:
  • Then My anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsakethem, and I will hide My face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come upon them; so that they will say in that day: “Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?” (Devarim 31:17)
“Hashem,” on the other hand, refers to when God when He works in history b’Hashgochah Pratis, through personalized Divine Providence. There is nothing hidden about God on this level, since it results in miracles that openly proclaim the involvement of God in the affairs of the Jewish people, even for individuals, even on a mundane level.

Belief in Elokim only is the way of the Mitzrim;2 belief in Hashem is supposed to be the way of the descendants of Avraham Avinu. This is why Yosef was taken to task for implying that he had ended up in jail for no good Divine reason:
  • “I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and I did nothing for them to have put me into the pit.” (Bereishit 40:14-16)
Nothing? By mistake? Not as a function of Hashgochah Pratis, but only as a function of Hashgochah Klallis? For a Jew, is that even possible? If God isn’t involved in every single aspect of life, guiding it, directing it, facilitating it, the bad times and the good times, then what will trusting in Him accomplish in the end?

Hence, when the Midrash teaches:

  • One who trusts in God will be surrounded by kindness (Tehillim 32:10): even an evil person who trusts in God will be surround by kindness. (Midrash Tehillim 32:10)
it means: one who believes in Hashem, that is, in the God of Hashgochah Pratis, is one in whom Hashgochah Pratis will believe, and therefore, perform miracles.

Trust in God means trust in Hashem, in direct, and personal Divine Providence, no matter where you live, no matter what the time.

No matter how successful. This means realizing that there is never anything natural about the way that a Jew survives in this world, no matter how natural we may appear to survive. The only difference between the good times, when we seem to succeed because the whole world is succeeding, and the bad times, when we seem to survive against the odds, is the way God, that is Hashem, camouflages His hand within the automatic world of Hashgochah Klallis.

Ironically, due to human nature, His hand may appear more hidden during the good times than during the bad times. Developing the intellectual understanding that allows one’s mind’s eye to see this is the secret to bitachon in the good times, which will save the person during the bad times.

____________________________________
1 Rashi, Shemos 1:10. However, Pharaoh should have read the fine print, since God had said nothing about drowning a single nation by water, which He did in the Red Sea, measure-for-measure.
2 Mitzrayim is first, and foremost, a concept, an ideology that says, “True spirituality isn’t important, and even hampers one’s ability to enjoy the material world,” and belief in Elokim allowed them to live with the illusion that they could control their religious outlook.
Any society that promulgates this approach to life is the Mitzrayim of its time, even if the people themselves do not live in the northern part of South Africa. For a period of time, Mitzrayim and Egypt were the same thing. However, though Egypt may have stayed where it has always been physically, Mitzrayim didn’t, moving on after the exodus of the Jewish people, from continent to continent.

Erev Purim

On these days
right before Purim, it cannot be stressed strongly enough that our brothers and sisters in the Land of our Avos and Imahos (Jewish founding families of our 12 Tribes) are suffering from poverty,
and that means clothing, food and shelter, not to mention the trauma of being fired upon with rockets and mortars.

If we want our prayers to be strengthened on the day of Purim, then I would suggest that one give and give with an open hand and heart to help these families and individuals who will Bless us for remembering them in the personal dilemma.

Akiva of Mystical Paths has direct links to Yad Eliezer, Colel Chabad, Lema'an Achai (Beit Shemesh), and Rabbi Rosenberg's Eizer L'Shabbos in Safed, who is begging with a broken heart that we please donate so families with have food for Purim.

Shirat Devorah tells us what the Rambam writes on the obligation of Matanot L'evyonim taking priority over other obligations of Purim.

Give Nachas to Avinu B'Shamayim
and donate please.

Ancient Torah from 1290 - 1315 Spain

“It’s a Unique, Beautifully Written Torah”

Rabbi Itzhak Reisman, “I acquired a Torah scroll, written on brownish parchment... The moment I saw it, I recognized it as a Spanish scroll, which means it had to be written before 1492. My estimate was about 1480.”

According to Rabbi Reisman, this is a complete Torah, in a near-kosher state (meaning that it requires very few repairs). “The most interesting thing about it are the cabalistic ‘tagin,’ the calligraphic flourishes adorning the Hebrew letters, which I have never seen before in a Spanish Torah.”

Reisman and his partner contacted an academic expert in Israel, who examined the text and sent them back a letter asserting that it was probably written by a scribe named Shemtov Ibn Gaon, the author of several manuscripts, one of which was on the art of Torah calligraphy. Ibn Gaon left Spain for Israel in 1310. This is the oldest known complete Spanish Torah scroll. And the cabalistic flourishes make it an even more valuable relic.”

A Happy Ending Story at

[excerpts]
In middle of the winter, on a stormy day, the Katzs were separated from their second dream. And once again, the hospital blankets absorb her tears, and she hears all around her the high-pitched cries of tiny human beings. She is the only one in the maternity ward distraught and alone, without balloons, without chocolate. Without a baby.

Teves and Shevat pass in misery. Adar arrives. It's barely a year since they got married, and she has no energy for anything. What does she care about Adar? About Purim? What do costumes mean to her? She won't go to her grandparents this year. What would she do there, with all her cousins and their children. With their babies.

"Remember the pidyon haben costume?" Moshe Chaim asks her suddenly.
"Of course." But how does he remember it? When she spoke about it, it looked like didn't interest him in the least.

"I thought...maybe..." he stutters, "how much would such a costume have cost us if we'd make it from the most expensive materials?"
"From the best materials? Around two, three hundred shekel."
"Maybe, if we're not buying a costume for our baby," he says, "we should use that money to make other children happy on Purim?"
"OK, I'll find out who we can donate to," Shevi replies with no enthusiasm. Her neighbor upstairs, Miriam, volunteers in some chessed organization. She'll ask her.

When Miriam tells her about the chessed organization that she volunteers at, Shevy is in shock. She hears about terrible situations, about hungry children, about emotional neglect that leaves children scarred and endangers the next generation as well. Miriam tells her about the after school activities, about the soup kitchen for adults, and about the enormous range of activities before Purim.

When Shevi gets home, the telephone rings. It's from the doctor's office. There's something, ahh.... not clear about the last tests of Katz Bat Sheva and it would be good to come down to the office immediately.

And the heartbreak is awful, because these tests are a clear sign that the third dream blew up, just like the two previous ones.

[....]

And Moshe Chaim can find no words to comfort her. And can't find anyone who will comfort him. "Maybe we should give a donation to Chasdei Yosef," she suggest suddenly. "Miriam says that people see salvations."

Moshe Chaim is skeptical. "Maybe they see salvations in logical matters, but here, when the tests already show things, what will help to donate?"

"She says they see miraculous salvations. What do you care? Let's try."
"Fine," Moshe Chaim agrees. "Give a sum now, and promise that if everything is all right, despite these terrible test results, and we have a healthy baby, we'll donate more." He thought for a minute, not knowing what sum to specify. "The truth is, you can say whatever you want, even three thousand shekel, since we have no chance in any case..."

She makes a pledge. Not for three thousand shekel, but for a respectable sum. She brings a nice sum for the collection for that Purim, and promises to double it the next Purim - if and when. Afterwards, she makes a doctor's appointment.

[....]

A year later, in the beginning of Adar, Shevi goes to the office of Chasdei Yosef to pay off the amount she promised. She takes with her an infant, a cute baby several months old. This is the baby that the original tests showed would never be born at all. The baby of Chasdei Yosef. Shevi didn't pay over the phone by credit card, not did she send a check in the mail. She wanted to go by herself, and to bring along her baby. She takes him out of his stroller, hugs him tightly, and enters the soup kitchen.

Steam rises up from the kitchen. Shevi leans forward and presses her mouth to her baby's ears. She whispers a few words to him. No one hears what she said; it remains a secret between them. She gives a sizeable donation to Chasdei Yosef, as well as an incredible story - one of many....

A Yearning for Spiritual Leadership

Disillusionment Should Increase our Yearning for the Spiritual Leadership and Vision of the Messiah

The first minute plus 52 is very moving:

Zion Needs the Messiah
by Yosef Ben Shlomo Hakohen*
[Special to Artuz Sheva]

[Excerpts from the article...]
According to a teaching of Maimonides, the belief in the coming of the Messiah is one of the thirteen principles of our faith (commentary of Maimonides to Mishnah Sanhedrin, chap. 10). The following statement is the well-known summary of this teaching of Maimonides:

“I believe with complete faith in the coming of the Messiah, and even though he may delay, nevertheless I anticipate every day that he will come.”

The belief in the coming of the Messiah is deeply embedded within the consciousness of the Jewish people. Even those of our people who view themselves as “secular” have been affected by this belief. For example, the book World of Our Fathers, by Irving Howe, describes the messianic yearnings of an earlier generation of Jewish socialists and progressive activists who strayed from the path of Torah. Although their ideology was secular, their yearning, hope and striving for a better world was rooted in the ancient Jewish belief that the Messiah will eventually come and inaugurate a new age of universal justice, unity and shalom. [...]

A description of the messianic age of redemption and the role of the Messiah is found in Chapter 11 of the Book of Isaiah, and it opens with the following passage:

A staff will emerge from the stump of Jesse, and a shoot will sprout from his roots. The spirit of HaShem will rest upon him - a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and strength, a spirit of knowledge and reverence for HaShem. He will be imbued with a spirit of reverence for HaShem; and he will not need to judge by what his eyes see nor decide by what his ears hear. He will judge the destitute with righteousness, and decide with fairness for the humble of the earth. He will strike the world with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked one. Righteousness will be the girdle round his loins, and faith will be the girdle round his waist. (Isaiah 11:1-5)

In the above passage, it states: “The spirit of HaShem will rest upon him - a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and strength, a spirit of knowledge and awe of HaShem.” This verse clearly indicates that the Messiah is an enlightened human being who is in awe of HaShem, but who is not HaShem. This verse serves as a reminder that we are not to deify any human being, including a great Jewish human being.

It also states: “He will strike the world with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked one.” According to Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, this verse reveals that the power of the Messiah will come from “the rod of his mouth” - the strength of his teachings. Through these teachings, explains Rabbi Hirsch, the conscience and power of goodness within the wicked one will be awakened; thus,

“the wicked one has certainly been killed,
but in his place,
a fresh pure human being has arisen anew.”
(Commentary on the Haftorot)

The prophet then describes an era of universal shalom and spiritual enlightenment:

The wolf will live with the sheep, and the leopard will lie down with the kid; and a calf, a lion whelp and a fatling together, and a young child will lead them. A cow and bear will graze and their young will lie down together; and a lion, like cattle, will eat hay. A suckling will play by a viper’s hole; and a newly weaned child will stretch his hand towards an adder’s lair. They will neither injure nor destroy in all of My sacred mountain; for the earth will be filled with knowledge of HaShem as water covering the sea bed. (Isaiah 11:1-9)

With the arrival of the Messiah, adds the Prophet Isaiah, HaShem will bring all our people home:

It shall be on that day that the Master of All will once again show His hand, to acquire the remnant of His people... He will raise a banner for the nations and assemble the castaways of Israel; and He will gather in the dispersed ones of Judah from the four corners of the earth. (verses 11,12)

The above prophecies reveal what the Messiah will accomplish after he arrives. We are therefore awaiting the arrival of the true Messiah, when all of these prophecies will be fulfilled. Even though he may tarry, we are not to lose hope, for when the hour arrives for the birth of the messianic age, he will not delay. In this spirit, the prophet Habakkuk proclaims:

For there is yet another hazon ("vision") for the appointed time; it will speak of the end and it will not deceive. Though it may tarry, await it, for it will surely come; it will not delay. (Habakkuk 2:3)

"We have but nine of these days in a century, and hope all can enjoy a little math fun on Tuesday," said Ron Gordon, a Redwood City teacher who started a contest meant to get people excited about the event.

The winner gets, of course, $339 for having the biggest Square Root Day event.

The last such day was five years ago, on February 2, 2004, which coincided with Groundhog Day. The next is seven years away, on April 4, 2016.  [....]

Gordon knows most people won't notice the odd calendar event, but hopes those that do get a chuckle out of it. "These days are like calendar comets, you wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day - and poof - they're gone."

The Yeshiva Net at 8 PM Tonite

Last week we read in Parshas Terumah about the 'Staves' (poles) and how they were tightly linked thru rings to the 'Aron' in the Holy Mishkan. Plus the 'Kerashim' (planks) and how they were linked together thru rings. Now, this week, in Parshas Tetzaveh we read about the 'Ephod' (apron) and 'Choshen' (breastplate) being bound together using two gold rings. It is very interesting how Rabbi Y.Y. Jacobson relates these details of Kedusha to the profundity of a Yid.

Dealing with the tension of the human personality
By Yosef Y. Jacobson

Linking the Apron and the Breastplate
There is an intriguing mitzvah (commandment) recorded in this week’s Torah portion: “And they shall bind the choshen (breastplate) by its rings to the rings of the ephod (apron) ... so that the choshen shall not budge from the ephod (1).”
The meaning of these words is this:

The choshen (breastplate) and the ephod (apron) were two of the eight special garments worn by the High Priest (Kohen Gadol) while performing the services in the Tabernacle. The choshen was a breastplate set with twelve precious stones, each inscribed with the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. It was worn on the breast, over the heart. The ephod was an apron-like garment, covering the lower back of the body, from the waist to the ankles, with a belt that tied in the front (2).

Two gold rings sewn on the ephod’s belt lined up with two gold rings sewn to the bottom corners of the choshen; these were bound together with ribbons of blue wool. It is of vital importance, the Torah stresses, that the two should remain securely fastened at all times that the priestly garments are worn. “The choshen shall not budge from the ephod.”  But why? Why the insistence that the breastplate and apron must be tightly linked at all times? Why bother if they are disconnected or only loosely connected?

A Tale of Two Garments
The answer, presented in the mystical tradition, is deeply moving.

The two garments – the breastplate seated atop the heart and the apron hanging on the lower back – represent the “upper” and “lower” dimensions of life, or the “forward” and “backward” aspects of human existence. The breast-plate represented those individuals whose hearts were aflame with spiritual passion and ecstasy, while the apron symbolized the people who struggled with backward temptations, the crass and lowly impulses and dispositions (3).

This is not merely a distinction between two types of people; it is rather a distinction between two aspects existing in each of our lives. Few are the people who can be defined as “breastplates” or “aprons” exclusively. Most of us vacillate between backward and frontward tendencies, between lower and higher aspirations. We celebrate moments of light but we must also quarrel with darkness. At times life is a cruise through a tranquil seabed, yet at other times it consists of navigation through turbulent waves, battle fields and war zones. There are moments we sense our calling, yet at other times we yearn to discover our true selves, we struggle to find our place in the world. Crudeness, superficiality and lowliness may at any moment consume our multi-dimensional personalities.

Hence, the Torah instructs us to tightly link the breastplate to the apron, “so that the choshen shall not budge from the ephod.” We must somehow learn to integrate the two parts of the self, without escaping into either element. Do not retreat, the Torah is saying, into your “higher” self and forget about your “lower” self, for when the lower self re-surfaces you might fall hard. On the other hand, do not allow yourself to be swept away by your lower self and ignore your transcendental aspirations, for such a life is likely to leave you deeply thirsty and anxious.

You must learn the art of integration. You must come to terms with the truth that the “breastplate” and the “apron” together constitute the very objective of existence, to confront darkness and transform it into light, to create harmony out of the building blocks of diversity.
