Parshas Balak 14-24

I see him but not now:
 אֶרְאֶנּוּ וְלֹא עַתָּה אֲשׁוּרֶנּוּ וְלֹא קָרוֹב דָּרַךְ 
Bilaam spoke about the very distant future of the Jewish People, the time when the final Messianic Redemption would come. His entire series of pronouncements encompassed four periods in Jewish History: In the Wilderness; the impending Conquest of the Land; their period of greatness after conquering the Land and their surrounding enemies; and now the End of Days (Ramban)

A Star has issued from Jacob:
כּוֹכָב מִיַּעֲקֹב וְקָם שֵׁבֶט מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל
Though speaking of future Jewish Kings, Bilaam spoke in the past tense, for it is common in prophecy that the prophet “sees” the subject of his speech as clearly as if it had already taken place.

The Star is a King and the Scepter is the Royal Power to overcome opposition and bring everyone under his sway (Rashi) The Jewish King will defeat the nobles of Moab as well as the entire world. Seth was the son of Adam and Eve who became the ancestor of all mankind, so that the children of Seth are all the people on the fact of the earth.

The King is the subject of dispute. The Ramban interprets this entire passage with reference to Messianic times. Messiah is called a “Star” more likely a shooting star, or meteor, because he will have to flash across heaven visible to the whole world, to gather Jews from their dispersion.

Edom shall be a conquest and Seir shall be the conquest of his enemies
הָיָה אֱדוֹם יְרֵשָׁה וְהָיָה יְרֵשָׁה שֵׂעִיר אֹיְבָיו וְיִשְׂרָאֵל עֹשֶׂה חָיִל:
His enemies, Seir and Edom – the Two Names of Esau’s descendants – will fall to his enemy, Israel. Israel will dominate Edom and destroy its most prominent city (Rashi) This describes the End of Days, because the current dispersion is called the Edomite Exile. This will end when Edom’s power is broken (Ramban)

Haftara Balak: Micah 5:6

ז  וְהָיָה שְׁאֵרִית יַעֲקֹב בַּגּוֹיִם, בְּקֶרֶב עַמִּים רַבִּים, כְּאַרְיֵה בְּבַהֲמוֹת יַעַר, כִּכְפִיר בְּעֶדְרֵי-צֹאן--אֲשֶׁר אִם-עָבַר וְרָמַס וְטָרַף, וְאֵין מַצִּיל.
And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples – like the dew from HaShem, like raindrops upon grass, that hopes not for a man and anticipates not the soul of a man – like a lion among the forest – like lion cut among a flock of sheep

ט  וְהָיָה בַיּוֹם-הַהוּא נְאֻם-יְהוָה, וְהִכְרַתִּי סוּסֶיךָ מִקִּרְבֶּךָ; וְהַאֲבַדְתִּי, מַרְכְּבֹתֶיךָ.
And it shall be on that day - the word of Hashem - I will cut down your horses from your midst, and I will cause your chariots to be lost, and I will cut down the cities of your land, and I will raze all your cities ]. . .] in anger and fury will I inflict vengeance upon the nations that do not listen.

ח  הִגִּיד לְךָ אָדָם, מַה-טּוֹב; וּמָה-יְהוָה דּוֹרֵשׁ מִמְּךָ, כִּי אִם-עֲשׂוֹת מִשְׁפָּט וְאַהֲבַת חֶסֶד, וְהַצְנֵעַ לֶכֶת, עִם-אֱלֹהֶיךָ.
[. . .] O man, what is good, and what Hashem seeks from you; only the performance of justice, the love of kindness, and walking humbly with your G–d.

Parshat Pinchas

The mystery surrounding Eliyahu was so great that the Sages of Israel could not even agree on his exact identity. The Medrash (Breishit Rabba 71) tells us:

• One time, our teachers disagreed on this point: Some said that Eliyahu HaNavi was descended from the Tribe of Gad; others said he was from Binyamin. Eliyahu himself then stood before them and said: "Our teachers, why are you arguing about me? I am from the descendants of Rachel's sons [Joseph and Binyamin]."

And in the Gmara (Bava Metziah, page 114b), we read the following story:

• Rabba the son of Avuha found Eliyahu in a Gentile cemetery, and said to him: "Aren't you a Kohen? Why, then, are you inside a cemetery]?" Eliyah answered: "Did you not learn the Order of Taharot [Purities], in which it is taught in the name of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai that the graves of non-Jews do not defile, as is written (Yechezekl 34,31), "You are My flock, flock of My pasture - you are man" - You are called Man, and non-Jews are not.”

On the other hand, Eliyahu often revealed himself to the Sages of Israel, and would routinely do so with Tannaim and Amoraim [Sages of the Mishna and Gmara]. They often asked the Prophet how the various Talmudic disputes were viewed in the Heavens.

הנה אנוכי שולח לכם את אליה הנביא לפני בוא יום ה' הגדול והנורא
Behold, I am sending you Eliyah the Prophet ahead of the arrival of the awesome day of Divine Judgement. (Malachi 3,23)

וּפִינְחָס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר נָגִיד הָיָה עֲלֵיהֶם לְפָנִים ה' עִמּוֹ:
And Pinchas ben Elazar was ruler over the Priests; Hashem had been with him.
(Divrei HaYamim I 9,20)

Who is Eliyahu? Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish teaches in the Medrash Yalkut Shimoni (Pinchas 771):

• Pinchas is Eliyahu. Hashem said to Pinchas: You have placed peace between Israel and Myself in this world, and so in the future, you will also be the one to place peace between Myself and My children, as is written: Behold, I am sending you Eliyah the Prophet… And he will return the heart of fathers to their sons… (Malachi 3,23-24)

A NATION THAT SHALL DWELL ALONE – Prophecy from Parshas Balak

"It’s like you want to say – I don’t get it, you still didn’t get it? The nation state of the Jewish people. The Jewish people, not the Jewish religion. The entire Jewish people. Don’t you get it? What is it that you don’t get about this?

"It’s time to understand that secular Judaism is the biggest and most successful stream of Judaism, and we won’t let anyone take that away from us, the same way we won’t let anyone take Judaism away from us. Because the Jewish world is not a 15th century Polish “Shtetl,” the Jewish world includes everyone that defines themselves as Jewish, and all the different ways of being Jewish. Without this diversity, there is no state of Israel and there is no Jewish people. And we won’t let anyone destroy the Jewish people and the State of Israel for cheap politics.

"Do you know the essence of the Enlightenment and Jewish secularism? Within a span of 150 years, we tuned from a persecuted, weak and exiled people into a strong, advanced democratic and unified, solidary nation.

BEHOLD A PEOPLE THAT SHALL DWELL ALONE, AND SHALL NOT RECKON ITSELF AMONG THE NATIONS: 

He foretells that Israel shall never surrender its Torah Principles because of the nations; and they shall forever continue to maintain their own ways. Included in this word “alone” is also the prophecy that all the nations will view Israel with hostility.

In his work “Contra Apion”, Josephus declares that from the earliest times the writers of the nations have issued calumnies against Israel; and we have seen that subsequently no nation has been subjected to as much animosity.

The words of Bilaam here are echoed in Haman’s accusation: “There is one people, scattered abroad and dispersed . . . and their laws are different from those of every people” (Esther 3:8)

“That shall dwell alone”: the period of 40 years in the Wilderness was a symbol and a portent that Israel would always be alone. Three aspects are easily recognized:

1. They shall be regarded by all nations as a people alone;
2. They shall isolate themselves from all nations and the ways of the nations; and
3. They shall be regarded by Hashem as a unique entity and not as one of the nations.

We are now at the height of the peak of the redemption of the people of Israel 

and the culmination of the climax of the Messiah king's reign in public. Power Lines "bouncing" during strong Chandler Arizona Dust Storm - Outages


July 7, 2017: High winds ripped through S Chandler, QueenCreek and Gilbert AZ yesterday causing some damage, triggering some brief power outages and as you will see in this video, the winds at one point were so strong I saw power lines bouncing up and down in between the poles by as much as 2 to 3 feet. Could have been much worse if those lines had snapped from the bouncing and intense fluctuation of the weight they hold. Those lines are VERY heavy and they were being tossed around like a spaghetti noodle.

Also, a sun observation of the sun setting while I was driving westbound. The road runs 'true east/west' and the sun appeared, at least from this vantage point, to be setting quite a bit farther to the northwest than I recollect from previous years.

Apocalyptic wildfire erupts so fast the flames can be seen from space! - State of Emergency


A wildfire burning out of control in Santa Barbara County has tripled in size over about eight hours. It has rapidly turned into fierce event and very large. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection website showed that the fire east of Santa Maria had exploded to nearly 30 square miles (about 77 sq. kilometers) Saturday. The fire that spread under hot, dry gusty winds had forced evacuation orders for nearly 300 homes. It was about 10 percent contained. County fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni says more than 1,000 firefighters were deployed to the fire and more were on their way.

Five helicopters dropping water and four planes spraying fire retardant were attacking the flames. **British Columbia Declare State of Emergency** ~Wildfires out of control~ A province-wide state of emergency has been declared in British Columbia after dozens of new wildfires destroyed buildings and forced thousands of people from their homes. More than 1,800 firefighters were fighting around 200 fires on Saturday, many of which are considered to be out of control. Another 260 firefighters were coming to help from across Canada. Official province-wide evacuee numbers have not been released; however an estimated 6,000 people had been forced from their homes as of Saturday afternoon, according to the Cariboo Regional District.

**The Shadow Rule**

Parshas Balak – Words of Truth From our Enemies

WORDS OF TRUTH FROM OUR ENEMIES

Some of the most basic truths emerge from the mouths of our enemies. They come to correct us; Hashem sends them only because we need them. As it says, “Beware lest your heart be seduced and you turn astray and serve gods of others and bow to them. Then the wrath of Hashem will blaze against you…” (Dvarim 16-17) 

Hashem’s wrath blazes only because we have turned astray. 

One of the most potent examples is Bilaam, whose prophetic pronouncements are staggering in their pinpoint accuracy. Bilaam hated us with profound hatred. He would have greatly rejoiced if he had been able, chas v’Shalom, to destroy every Jewish man, woman and child. But Hashem, in His boundless mercy, saved us, just as He has saved us countless times throughout history. 

If we study the words of our enemies, we will find healing in their poison.

The “poison” cures us! We see this in the world of medicine and we see this in the world of ruchnius. Here, for example, is a quote about cancer drugs: "Most of these treatments attack not just cancer cells, but healthy cells, too. Thus, people taking the drugs too often suffer horrible side effects on top of whatever havoc the cancer itself is already wreaking.” (ABC News)

Similar things are true about “spiritual medicine,” lehavdil. After Korach died, Am Yisroel “was jeering and complaining about the ketores, saying, ‘It is a deadly poison….’” (Rashi on Bamidbar 17:13) What were they talking about? Ketores is “the dearest of all the korbanos!” (Rashi on Bamidbar 16:6)Ketores is uniquely able to save us! “You shall see that [ketores] is a plague stopper, and sin is what kills,” says Rashi. (Bamidbar 17:13) 

Sin is what kills. If we disassociate ourselves from the sin, then the poison will not harm us. 

The parah aduma is similar. At the same time that it heals, it “infects” those who handle it. The more potent the medicine, the more dangerous. Because it has the power to destroy evil, it can destroy other things as well. That is why we have to know how to handle these powerful tools. 

It is crucial to remember Bilaam’s pronouncements in our contemporary world. “Behold! It is a nation that will dwell in solitude and not be reckoned among the nations.” (Bamidbar 23:9) 

These words contain life-saving medicine. We have to try to purify ourselves so that we can apply this medicine. But, thousands of years later, we are still resisting it! We want to be loved! We want to be included among the nations! We scream when the United Nations treats us differently. Why don’t we listen to Bilaam? He clearly enunciated our position in the world.

We are not like them! We don’t want to be like them! Why are we kvetching? 

I’ll tell you why we are kvetching. We don’t want to trust Hashem! We want to be like the other nations because we don’t want to admit that our entire sustenance and protection comes from Hashem. If we believe that He is everything, then we have to follow all His rules! But if we behave like the other nations, G-d forbid, then we can pretend that we don’t depend on Him and we can try to follow our own desires instead of the Torah. 

Please listen to the earth-shaking words of Rabbi Yechezkel Levenstein zt”l: “When Yirmiahu Hanovi took leave of the Jewish captives on their way to Bavel … he rebuked them, saying, ‘Had you cried out in repentance, even once, while you were still in Tzion, you never would have suffered the punishment of Golus.’” 

Now he applies this to our own era. We must absorb these words: “We foolishly rely upon our army and on America instead of crying out to Hashem!” (Legacy of the Mashgiach, page 128)

Our lives depend on understanding these words. 

In a few days, the Three Weeks begin! Can you imagine! Another year and still no Bais Hamik-dosh! Another year! Ribono shel Olam! How long can this go on? How long can we endure this? 

We have to try to absorb this. There is no other Power beside Hashem, no other Source of Life, no sustenance, no protection, no bracha! We need nothing else besides Hashem and His Torah. Nothing! But we have to subordinate ourselves to Him. We have to humble ourselves to Him! We have to throw away the flimsy reeds on which we have been leaning. When you lean on a reed, you fall! We have fallen, and in three weeks – unless we wake up! – we will find ourselves once again on the cold floor, weeping and wailing for our Lost Temple! 

When are we going to take it seriously? When are we going to stop trying to imitate the other nations? We are alone and meant to be alone! “Am levadad yishkon!” We don’t share their goals or their ways! We don’t pray for what they pray for or desire what they desire! 

“For we arise early and they arise early; we for the words of Torah while they arise for idle words. We toil and they toil. We toil and receive reward, while they toil and do not receive reward…. We run to the life of the World to Come and they run to the well of destruction.” (Hadran) “Achas Shoalti!” Just to dwell in Your Sanctuary! That is all we need!

When are we going to stop embarrassing ourselves and the Ribono shel Olam? What do we need from the other nations? When Bilaam offers to bless Israel if he cannot curse them (Bamidbar 22:12), Hashem refuses, on which Rashi quotes the popular saying, “They say to a bee, ‘[We want] neither your honey nor your sting.” 

In his extreme hatred of Am Yisroel, Bilaam lost himself and foretold the ultimate Redemption: “A star has issued from Yaakov and a scepter-bearer has risen from Israel!” 

May we greet the Redeemer soon in our days!

FASCINATING STORY OF AMELIA EARHART – New Evidence

Does this photo prove Amelia Earhart survived her final flight?

A newly unearthed photograph suggests that Amelia Earhart did not perish at sea back on July 2, 1937, when the famed female aviator vanished from the sky after sending a number of troubling transmissions.

It has long been believed that poor visibility and low gas levels caused the plane to crash in the waters near Howland Island that day, claiming the lives of the 39-year-old pilot and her navigator Fred Noonan. (Article at NZHerald

The image (below) is believed to have been taken in 1937, the same year that Earhart went missing in the vicinity of the island chain.

It is a bittersweet discovery however, as the photograph also confirms the long-held belief that Earhart was captured by the Japanese and held as a prisoner of war, this according to experts who will appear on the History special Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence, airing this Sunday. He told them that he misses India; Indian Prime Minister Modi said that his country was open to him.

Prime Minister Netanyahu invited Holtzberg to accompany him on his future trip to India.

Moshe Holtzberg was accompanied by his paternal grandparents (Nahman and Freida Holtzberg), his maternal grandparents (Shimon and Yehudit Rosenberg) and by Sandra Samuel, his former Indian nanny who came with him to Israel.

Chocolate Cake for Breakfast? 

Research says it's good for both your brain and your waistline

New research says eating chocolate regularly can actually improve brain function. Yes, that sweet, sticky treat . . .  is now being associated with a host of cognitive benefits, including memory and abstract reasoning. It's all part of a long-term, large-scale study out of Syracuse University in New York that measured the effects of chocolate consumption on 968 people aged 23 to 98, without changing their overall dietary habits.

"Habitual chocolate intake was related to cognitive performance, measured with an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests," the researchers wrote. "More frequent chocolate consumption was significantly associated with better performance on [these tests].”

A few years ago, researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel reported that eating chocolate in the morning – yes, every morning – was found to help people lose weight, despite long-held beliefs that chocolate is one of those occasional splurge foods that dieters must resist in order to achieve their weight-loss goals. Healthy Chocolate Zucchini Muffins

1 TBS coconut oil, for greasing
3/4 cup zucchini, shredded
4 large eggs
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/3 cup coconut flour
1/4 cup cacao powder
3 TBS arrowroot powder 
1-1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/2 cup dairy-free chocolate chips

• Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a muffin tin with baking cups or grease with coconut oil.
• Place the shredded zucchini on a tray lined with a paper towel to drain some of the moisture while you prepare the batter.
• Place the eggs, maple syrup, and applesauce in the stand-mixer and mix on medium speed until combined.
• Add the coconut flour, cacao powder, arrowroot powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sea salt and mix again on medium speed until combined.
• Wrap the paper towel around the zucchini and give it a light squeeze to remove excess moisture and fold it into the batter along with 1/4 cup of the chocolate chips.
• Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups, filling each 2/3 of the way full. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of the chocolate chips on top. Bake for 22-25 minutes. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then on a wire rack until completely cool.

(at least 70 percent cacao), chopped
1/3 cup light-brown sugar
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
2 large eggs
2 TBS unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp coarse salt
2/3 cup almond flour
1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Brush an 8-inch square baking pan with oil. Line with parchment, leaving overhang. Brush parchment with oil.
• Melt half of chocolate in a heatproof bowl; whisk in oil, sugar, and syrup. Remove from heat.
• Whisk in eggs, one at a time, then cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Fold in flour and remaining chocolate.
• Pour batter into prepared pan; sprinkle with walnuts. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Let cool completely on a wire rack. To serve, cut into 2-inch squares.

The Conversion Law Needs to be Strengthened – Not Compromised

Maybe the blowup is a good thing... Now is the time for Haredim to make the Conversion Bill even Stronger and address the Real Problem.

Conversions Must Be According to Halacha

OPINION: Times of Israel: "[...T]he CONVERSION BILL is where the rubber hits the road in official Israel’s acceptance or rejection of American Jewish religion and identity. It is here where Haredi lawmakers seek to legislate the first clear rejection of “Reform” Judaism — what these lawmakers call “Reform” includes no small amount of Conservative and Orthodox — into Israel’s law books. It is no accident that many Israeli modern-Orthodox rabbis, including Tzohar founder Rabbi David Stav, are on the “Reform” side of the debate.

"On paper, the bill does very little. It says nothing at all about overseas conversions. It has nothing to do with conversions in Israel by Israeli citizens, including the hundreds of thousands of family members of Jews who are not themselves halachically Jewish. And it doesn’t concern non-citizens in Israel who seek to convert in the official state rabbinate framework. "Who’s left? Only these: non-citizens living in Israel for an extended period who obtain Jewish conversions from private conversion courts."

Dafka, this is what needs to be done – Strengthening the Conversion Law. Because, if the Reform and Conservative do move here, and realize they have been cheated of authentic Judaism, they will need the Halacha for authenticity. Their non-Jewish children (if so) will need the Halacha to join the Nation of Am Yisrael. The quasi-form-of-religion they profess is NOT ‘another stream of Judaism’. One cannot deny the Oral Law and say they are Jewish. There is no other way.

AIPAC Leaders: Netanyahu explained to the heads of the lobby that he had received a threat from the haredi parties that if he did not respond to their demands on these issues immediately they would cause a coalition crisis and force the country into holding early elections. Netanyahu said that he preferred the stability of the government over causing a shake-up to the entire State of Israel.

DEAL REACHED: JPost Article: Under the terms of the agreement the state together with the Reform and Masorti (Conservative) movements have agreed to request that the High Court of Justice delay by at least six months a ruling on a petition to grant non-Orthodox converts recognition by the state.

In return, the haredi parties have agreed to suspend their legislation which would have granted the Chief Rabbinate a total monopoly on conversion and would preempt the High Court ruling by denying in law any recognition of Reform and Conservative conversions done in Israel, as well as those of non-state, independent Orthodox rabbinical courts. [me: something does not make sense … is this a stalling posture?]

Netanyahu will now appoint a committee to review the issue and present alternative arrangements within six months, and the prime minister has given instructions for legislation on the issue not to be advanced until the committee reports back. [me: into committee-mode, which in the past has meant a backing away from original situation. Does this mean that Netanyahu will in the meantime it will give him time to prepare for new elections and new coalition partners? … so the conversion bill can be watered down?]

In the first place, why is an American body of Jews bringing their case to the Israeli Court System?? Are they planning Aliyah?

For the past four years, Israel has given them a large plaza called "Ezrat Yisrael" where they can pray as they want. Even after the arrangement was cancelled this week, the plaza will still continue to be used by them. Or rather, it will in fact not be used by them. Whenever I go to the Kotel, their plaza is empty.

Michael Malchieli (Shas):  What you are describing is the biryonim who used force to intimidate the rabbanim of that era … Today the role of biryonim is being filled by the Justice Ministry and attorney general. The whole argument boils down to whether the Rabbinate or the attorney general is the final voice on religious affairs.”

YELLOWSTONE SUPERVOLCANO  EARTHQUAKE SWARM REACHES 878 Over 900 EVENTS IN JUST TWO WEEKS

• Researchers from the University of Utah's Seismograph Stations (UUSS) have been monitoring the activity since it began last Monday, June 12.
• A total of 878 quakes have been recorded over the past fortnight at Yellowstone.
• Earthquake swarms are common in Yellowstone and, on average, comprise about 50 per cent of the total activity in the Yellowstone region.
• Although the latest swarm is the largest since 2012, it is fewer than weekly counts during similar events in 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010.
• The tremors were recorded at depths from ground level to nine miles (14.5 km) below sea level.
• Seismic activity could be a sign of an impending eruption of the supervolcano, although this is currently impossible to predict exactly.
