Interior Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir just put Gaza emigration at the center of Israel’s election debate, declaring: “It is time to admit it: Gandhi was right.” He was referring to former Israeli general and minister Rehavam “Gandhi” Ze’evi—and unveiling his new Gaza emigration proposal, “Disengagement 710.” Ben-Gvir deserves credit for forcing Israel to confront a question almost everyone avoided before October 7: What happens to Gaza after this war, and how does Israel guarantee that another October 7 massacre can never happen? His plan reportedly envisions encouraging the jihadi Gazans to voluntarily emigrate, establishing a dedicated government ministry, negotiating with destination countries, and providing financial assistance for relocation. I support putting voluntary Gaza emigration on the table. But Israel cannot wait seven years. In this video, I explain why I believe the United States should use its enormous leverage with Egypt to push Cairo to open the Rafah crossing to Gazan civilians who voluntarily want to leave the war zone. Get civilians who want to leave out of the battlefield. Allow the IDF to defeat the remaining Hamas and jihadist forces. Permanently demilitarize Gaza. Maintain Israeli security control so Gaza can never again become a terrorist army sitting alongside Israeli communities, and make Gaza Jewish again. For decades Israel was sold different versions of the same failed strategy: withdrawals, deterrence, economic incentives, stronger fences and “managing Hamas.” October 7 shattered that conception. The Gaza debate must now be about solutions that prioritize Israeli lives and prevent another massacre, not rebuilding the conditions that produced October 7. Ben-Gvir has started an important conversation. Now Israel must decide how quickly it is prepared to act. Gaza emigration. Rafah. Egypt. Hamas. October 7. Israeli security. The future of Gaza.
