The "Biden" Syndrome

REPORT: Israel, U.S. Reach

Defense Minister Ehud Barak and U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell reportedly reached an agreement Monday allowing Israel to complete about 2,500 housing units already under construction in West Bank settlements, according to Maariv newspaper on Wednesday.

If confirmed, the deal would go against repeated demands by the Obama administration for Israel to stop all settlement construction.

"In other words, the Americans have adopted the position that Israel should not be required to halt settlement construction as a precondition, but rather only when the peace process with the Arab countries and the Palestinian Authority gets on track," Maariv said.

US Denies Reported Deal on Israeli Settlements

"That report in that Israeli media outlet is inaccurate," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said after the Maariv newspaper reported that Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak and US envoy George Mitchell had struck such a deal.
