Rabbi Winston – Parashas HaAzinu – Succot

My lesson will drip like rain; my word will flow like dew; like storm winds on vegetation and like raindrops on grass. (Devarim 32:2)

THERE IS ONLY one type of criticism, but two kinds of people to “receive” it. There is the person who “hears” it, and the one who doesn’t, or more accurately, CAN’T.
Of course there are many ways you can level criticism at someone, from “soft sell” to “all guns firing.” But at the end of the day, or rather, at the end of the criticism, the point is the same: something is wrong and needs to be changed.
When it comes to the receivers of criticism, there are “Windows” and “Walls.” Like real windows, these “Windows” let criticism in, and quite possibly, back out again. (“You’re criticizing me? Before you criticize me, look at your own life…”). Like real walls, these “Walls” just let any criticism directed at them ricochet right off.
With “Windows,” there is hope. These people may not change right away, but they will probably change over time, at least a little bit. There can BE improvement, and it is worth caring about what they do and how.
Not with “Walls,” though. These people are hopeless, so you might as well save your breath. Unless it is simply therapeutic to speak your mind no matter WHO listens, perhaps save your energy for something that DOES make a difference.
True, the Talmud says that a person has to protest when something is wrong even if they do not believe it will change anything (Shabbos 55a). In fact, it goes so far as to say that if you don’t at least say something, then you can end up being held responsible for their “sin.” Keep THIS is mind next time you find yourself shouting at a “WALL.”
Not all “Walls” are the same. Some might know better, but just refuse to face the less-than-nice facts about themselves. They’re insecure, and have a difficult time accepting that they are flawed, even though they so obviously are…even to THEM.
Then there are the Walls that are simply missing something. They lack some component that would allow them to see themselves in a true light. Whatever it is that allows a person to compare their behavior with a DECENT social norm in order to appropriately judge their actions, they lack. They just can’t tell that they’re doing something wrong.
About 30 years ago, a book came out that questioned the new standard of modesty winning over society. It bemoaned how things that used to embarrass people in public had become more acceptable, which is never good for mankind, not from G–D’s perspective. Shame had gone missing from many sectors of society, and some of that had even spilled over into the Torah world as well.
That was then. Today, something ELSE seems to have disappeared. It seems we’ve reached that point in the historical cycle (because the pattern has repeated itself many times already) when people lose touch with the world around them. Social context, for many, is vanishing.
A simple example. A person needs to park, but all spots close to their destination are taken. So, they park on the sidewalk instead, possible inconveniencing, or worse, endangering pedestrians. Or there is a small spot remaining that is only big enough for part of their car, so they park part of their car in it, and let the rest of their car remain sticking well into the street, blocking traffic, endangering people, and putting their own car at risk.
The other day, while at the local grocery store, a woman pulled into a convenient parking spot right in front of the store. What she failed to realize, as she got out of her car talking on her cell phone, was that the spot was left open because other drivers had noticed that parking there blocked the entrance to the parking lot itself!
So I stopped her in her self-absorbed tracks and pointed out her error. She turned around to verify what I was saying, returned to her car, and moved it. Had she already known this, and chose to ignore it, or had she been too involved in her reality to care how what she did affected others? I didn’t ask her that, and I doubt giving her mussar would have changed much anyhow.
But something I have noticed about many such people is that they are not malicious. They do not have ill-intent. In fact, a lot of times they think they are doing the right thing and helping out society with their convoluted way of thinking. They are, basically, very nice people.
That’s important, for a number of reasons. For one, it makes it easier to not get angry at them for their somewhat reckless behavior. It is always a lot more annoying when people know better but do worse. It’s also a little easier to put up with when the problem is generational, and not specific to a few individuals.
Furthermore, as we learn from the story of Yonah, read at Mincha on Yom Kippur, G–D also deals differently with sin that is committed from sloppiness versus sin committed from a lack of mental capability:

Now should I not take pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are many more than one hundred twenty thousand people who do not know their right hand from their left…? (Yonah 4:11)

That’s certainly today. So many people do not know their right from their left, especially POLITICALLY, or - right from - wrong, SPIRITUALLY. And this saved Nineveh in Yonah’s time, and who knows how much it is saving OUR generation in OUR time!
The question is, but for how long? One of the straws that broke the camel’s back in Noach’s time was a general disregard for the wellbeing of others. The world can handle only so much selfishness before G–D decides to lower the boom on mankind. Innocence can spare a person time in Gehinom, but not necessarily in everyday life.
It is the way the world is made. For example, it doesn’t matter that the two drivers were trying to drive safely. When they hit each other, serious damage resulted, because that’s the laws of Physics. Likewise, Creation is built to handle only so much “Me-ness.” After that, it falls apart.
This is, perhaps, why such an integral part of Yom Kippur is asking forgiveness from others. We didn’t do it on Rosh Hashanah, but we certainly do it on Yom Kippur. We even have a special prayer, “Tefillah Zakah,” that we say before Kol Nidre with which we declare our forgiveness of others.
Why would a day of working hard on personal forgiveness start off with forgiveness of others? Why does G–D say that He won’t forgive us for wronging others if they haven’t first forgiven us, if not because how treat others is so integral to the purpose of Creation?
We’re not here to create “Me” generations.
We’re here to create “Others” generations.
So, maybe there is something missing from this generation that used to exist, either in education or in actual brain capacity. But we should work on reversing that and fast. G–D has patience with us. This is the time to fix that, especially as we become a bit closer to one another, leaving the privacy of our brick homes for the lack of privacy of our schach-covered “tents.”
Anecdotally, one of the highlights of Succos for me has been sitting in my succah while being able to hear other families singing Yom Tov songs. It created a sense of achdus—unity we don’t get the rest of the year. Now it is clearer that even this is more intended than incidental.

Gmar Chasimah Tovah and Chag Samayach.

Northern California under SIEGE by PG&E?

PGandE Shutdown Day One: Shots Fired, Curfew Enacted, Police Out In Force!

Day One of PGandE's power cuts, and already shots are allegedly fired at PGandE trucks, eggings, and police are bolstering numbers as cities enact CURFEWS in a bid to "prevent opportunities for crimes." Gas stations are not pumping. And PGandE's website...is still broken.

UPDATE: there seems to be an alternative purpose to this strange happening that cannot yet be disclosed; the aim of which is actually the opposite of what the media is reporting.

CDC on this Year’s FLU VACCINE: -43% (minus) Effective

CDC.gov: Preliminary Estimates of 2018–19 Seasonal Influenza

jeremyrhammond  “[…] a CDC document (above) presenting the findings of their preliminary estimate, and it shows that, when it came to protecting against the H3N2 strain of the virus that predominantly circulated in the second half of the season, the vaccine appears to have been considerably less than worthless.

"Data from the "Hospitalized Adult Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Network" (HAIVEN) show that the vaccine was -43% effective against influenza A(H3N2).

"This negative effectiveness was based on a small sample and not statistically significant, but the CDC conceded that its analysis of data from HAIVEN as well as two other networks "identified no vaccine protection against predominant H3N2 virus this season”.

"A negative vaccine effectiveness has been documented in a number of studies. It has been shown that getting a flu shot each year can actually increase your risk of getting the flu because you are denying yourself the opportunity to gain the much more robust immunity conferred by natural infection.

"Unlike the immunity conferred by the inactivated influenza vaccine, which targets just three or four strains of the constantly evolving influenza virus, natural immunity offers cross-protection against other strains and even other viruses.

"I explain all this in detail, with references to the scientific literature, in part three of my major influenza vaccine exposé. So in case you missed it (or just want to brush up):

The government and media systematically deceive the public about what science tells us about the risks of getting an influenza vaccine every year. jeremyrhammond

The WHO admits polio outbreak in the Philippines caused by polio vaccines… outbreak “caused by vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2”

Oral polio vaccines are actually “spawning virulent strains” of polioviruses, reports Children’s Health Defense:

The alarming surge in vaccine-derived polio cases presents vaccine planners with a “quandary” or “conundrum”—because “The very tool you are using for [polio] eradication is causing the problem.” …Vaccine researchers have long known that these OPV-derived viruses can themselves cause polio, particularly when they get “loose in the environment.”

The Associated Press story admits that it has been over 25 years since polio in the Philippines was contracted from a “wild strain.” Since 1993, all the cases of polio in the Philippines have been caused by polio vaccines

Even worse, as the AP admits, vaccines for dengue fever were actually found to increase the risk of severe dengue infections:

The government halted the dengue immunization drive after Sanofi said a study showed the vaccine may increase the risk of severe dengue infections. More than 830,000 children received the Dengvaxia vaccine under the campaign, which was launched in 2016 and halted in 2017. Sanofi officials said the Dengvaxia vaccine was safe and would reduce dengue infections if the vaccination drive continued.

Remembering Ari Fuld z"l and Yehoshua Friedberg z"l

Ari Fuld z"l and Yehoshua Friedberg z"l Memorial and Dedication Ceremony
Sunday, Oct 6, 2019 at 4:30 PM [and still the tears flow down my cheeks]

Sunday is Ari Fuld's first yahrtzeit (anniversary of death), and the Fuld family and the Ari Fuld Project invited the public to a dedication ceremony of the IDF Soldiers' Hospitality Truck at the Gush Etzion Junction at 4:30 p.m.

Last September, Ari Fuld died a hero's death after being stabbed by a Palestinian Arab terrorist in Gush Etzion. Despite his fatal wounds, Ari pursued his attacker to save others from being harmed before collapsing and succumbing to his wounds.

Twenty-six years earlier, Ari had enlisted in the IDF as a lone soldier together with fellow lone soldier Yehoshua Friedberg from Canada. A year later, in 1993, Yehoshua was kidnapped and murdered by Arab terrorists. Ari took it upon himself to always remember Yehoshua, keeping in touch with his family throughout the years.

The last project Ari was working on before his death was creating a hospitality truck to serve IDF soldiers as they travel from one mission to the next in memory of Yehoshua. Unfortunately, Ari didn't have a chance to complete the project before his life was cruelly cut short in the prime of his life.

On Sunday, on Ari's first yartzheit, his dream will be fulfilled and the truck will be dedicated in Yehoshua's memory, and unfortunately in his memory as well.

The Biggest Secret of Yom Kippur

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5TJT.com

The Nesivos Shalom provides an essential understanding to Yom Kippur.

The Gemorah in Yuma (85b) cites a statement made by Rabbi Akiva: “Fortunate are you, O Israel, for before Whom you are purifying yourselves, and Who is purifying you!”

It is possible that Rabbi Akiva is actually responding to a previous statement of Rabbi Elazar Ben Azariah. Rabbi Elazar Ben Azariah understands the words “lifnei Hashem” in the verse, “Mikol Chatosaichem Lifnei Hashem Tit-haru” as attached to Mikol Chatosaichem. He, therefore, darshens that on Yom Kippur it is only the sins that are Bain Adam LaMakom – the chatosaichem lifnei Hashem that are purified. But there is no forgiveness on sins that are Bain Adam Lechaveiro.

Rabbi Akiva darshens the verse a different way. He has Lifnei hashem connected to Tit-haru. “Mikol Chatosaichem Lifnei Hashem Tit-haru”

One can ask, what additional insight is Rabbi Akiva providing us with? What is special about this tahara – specifically?

The Nesivos Shalom explains to us that Rabbi Akiva is revealing to us the fundamental essence of how atonement on Yom Kippur works. The Maharal at the end of his Shabbos Shuvah drasha explains Rabbi Akiva’s words as “that which Klal Yisroel achieves atonement on Yom Kippur is because they have a Dveikus with Hashem yisaleh, as it states (Dvarim 4:4), ‘va’atem hadveikim lashem elokaichem..’

On this Rabbi Akiva comments, “Fortunate are you O’ Israel before Whom you are purifying yourselves” – because there is no greater Maaleh – or quality. He further adds – “And who purifies you? Your father in Shamayim.” Because Klal Yisroel is entirely attached to Him – the Dveikus in and of itself removes and eradicates the sin from Klal Yisroel. Because regarding HaKadosh Boruch Hu – there is no chait – sin it removes sins from those that cleave to Him.

This is what the posuk means “Lifnei hashem tit-haru” that through the fact that you stand before Hashem and cleave and have Dveikus to Him this in and of itself purifies. When a Jew truly cleaves to Hashem all his sins and Tumah become eliminated. “Kol Hamechubar laTahor tahor.” Whatever is connected to that which is pure – is pure. [This is a Mishna in Kailim 12:2]

The Maharal cites a proof from Mikvah The Mikvah is the source of purity. One who sticks to it with no chatzitzah (something interpolating in between), is free from Tumah. The same is true with purifying Klal Yisroel through complete Dveikus to hashem – with no Chatzitzah in between.

Through this we can explain the words of a Chazal in Meseches Shabbos (118b): “Whomsoever observes Shabbos properly – even if he served Avodah Zarah like the generation of Enosh – he is forgiven.” Now how could the most serious sin in the Torah be rectified by through the zchus of keeping Shabbos? The answer is only because Shabbos is also the “Day of Dveikus” of Klal Yisroel with Hashem in heaven, as the posuk says, “Bris Olam Baini Uvain Bnai Yisroel..” Therefore this great sin is forgiven through the mechanism of “whatever is connected to Tahor is tahor.” [See Mishna Kailim 12:2 dealing with the laws of purity and impurity].

According to this, the essential Avodah of Yom Kippur is Dveikus Bashem. This is the secret of purity and atonement. This is the essence of the day.

Rabbi Winston — Parashas Vayailech and Yirah on Yom Kippur

And Moshe went, and he spoke the following words to all Israel.
(Devarim 31:1)

WHEN A PERSON goes to court in the world of people, it is usually perfectly clear why to all parties involved. They know the basis of the court case, and what it means to win or to lose. Rosh Hashanah is somewhat different. We know in general what it is about, and every year people get up to define the day of Rosh Hashanah and the judgment that is handed down to give people a better idea about how to use this opportunity. You’d think that after thousands of years we’d already know EXACTLY what to focus on, besides just wanting to be a better Jew.

Interestingly enough, in spite of all the drashos I have heard on the topic, and all the different thoughts that they have offered, I am surprised that none ever referred to this:

Rava said: When man is led in for judgment he is asked, “Did you deal faithfully [i.e., with integrity], did you fix times for learning, did you engage in procreation, did you anticipate redemption, did you engage in the dialectics of wisdom, did you understand one thing from another. Even so, if ‘the fear of G–D is his treasure,’ then it is good, if not, then not.” (Shabbos 31a)

True, this section of Talmud is talking about a person’s FINAL day of judgment, after they have left this world for the next one. But why should every Rosh Hashanah not be a discussion about the same issues, especially since, as the Leshem explains, Heaven evaluates whether or not a person is already “Ben Olam HaBa,” that is, destined for the World-to-Come?

Second question. If fear of G–D is  the most important thing, why not just state this? Why go through the list of six activities first, only to emphasize the importance of fear of G–D at the end? And what’s WITH this list…why have these six things been singled out for Heavenly evaluation?

A similar question can be asked on Parashas Aikev. After Moshe Rabbeinu basically finished teaching all of Torah, all 613 mitzvos, he comes back and says, “After all, what does G–D want from you, but that you should fear Him!”

That’s it? Just fear of G–D? Only ONE of the 613 mitz-vos, so we can forget about the others?
Not so fast. Do we still have to do ALL 613 mitzvos? So what did Moshe Rabbeinu mean when he said, “only to fear G–D”? And certainly THAT, as the Talmud points out as well, is no small feat to achieve, and to keep!

The answer to ALL the questions is the difference between “goal” and “means.” Fear of G–D is certainly the goal, and the rest of the mitzvos are the “means” and the measure of fear of G–D as well. The extent to which a person puts themself out for a mitzvah, especially when it comes to understanding it and the intention they have while doing it, is the extent to which they are real with the reality of G–D.

And this particular list of mitzvos is mentioned because they are kind of like group leaders. Each one is a mitzvah that comes to fight back a certain human tendency to play G–D. For example, why does a person cheat in business, if not because they feel G–D does not have their back, and isn’t giving them all they need through legal means.

What about fixing times for learning? Well, if you really like spending time with someone, you don’t leave it to chance. You don’t leave each other this time without suggesting a next time. Some people even set up a time to meet each week on a regular basis, just to make sure they don’t miss each other.

We learn Torah to meet with G–D. It’s our “common ground.” If a person approaches Torah on a casual basis, they act as if they don’t really care much about meeting with G–D, as if they don’t NEED Him. Not enough fear of G–D there.

Procreation is a G–Dly act, for sure. But playing G–D when it comes to birth is a common thing, as genetic engineering shows. There is one particular account in the Talmud that is exactly about this, the story about Chizkiah HaMelech:

What did The Holy One, Blessed is He, do? He brought suffering to Chizkiah and then told Yeshayahu, “Go and visit the sick,” as it says, “In those days Chizkiah became ill to the point of death; and Yeshayahu son of Amotz, the prophet came and said to him, ‘So says G–D, Lord of Hosts: Command your house for you shall die and not live.’ ” (Yeshayahu 38:1).

“Why do I deserve such a severe punishment?” asked Chizkiah.
“Because,” answered Yeshayahu, “you did not have children.”
“But I saw through prophecy that I would have evil children.”
“What business have you with the mysteries of G–D?” (Brochos 10a)

Birth may be common, but it is also a great mystery. It is also hard to balance between what WE, as PARENTS want for our children, and what G–D Himself wants. And since G–D does not share His plan with us, we tend to only see things through our own eyes, creating all kinds of tensions and clashes, many of which are quite destructive to both child and parent.

Anticipating redemption is easy when one’s life is being threatened on a regular basis. Anticipating it when life is “good” shows that a person realizes that as “good” as exile is for Jews themselves, it is never good for the Shechinah while the nation is scattered, the Temple is unbuilt, and Torah is not official government policy. Then the anticipation of redemption is clearly for, as the Vilna Gaon explains, the sanctification of G–D’s Name, and not just for personal relief.

“Did you engage in the dialectics of wisdom, and did you understand one thing from another?” Wisdom is important for many things, but it is most important for being able to look at Creation and see G–D everywhere. As one pursues increasingly deeper levels of Torah, they are really pursuing G–D Himself. Climbing the wisdom ladder takes a person from one level to a higher one, on top of which is Ohr Ain Sof, G–D’s Infinite Light.

It’s not about being smart. That’s just a side benefit. It’s not about getting honor from people less bright. And it is not about getting ahead materially in life because of personal genius. It is about being spiritually sensitized so that a person does not lose track of G–D in their life. This is true fear of G–D, and this is what we’re evaluated for each Yom Kippur.

MUSLIM ANTISEMITISM IN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Are We Ready for What Will be Happening in 5780
sitting down and “discussing” “bullying” will not change anything;
the parents and school authorities should be taken to court

JEWISH BOYS TAUNTED IN SHOCKING CASES OF ANTI-SEMITIC BULLYING AT MELBOURNE SCHOOLS

YWN:  A 12-year-old Jewish student was forced to kneel down and kiss the shoes of a Muslim classmate, while a five-year-old boy was allegedly called a “Jewish cockroach” and repeatedly hounded over having a “Bris Mila”.

Unfortunately this is what brings non-religious Jews back into a Jewish environment, for protection; but the intended result is to bring them back to the Torah.

The two incidents this year – the first involving a boy at Cheltenham Secondary College and the second one a student at Hawthorn West Primary School – have prompted the Anti-Defamation Commission to sound an alarm about what it says is a “rapidly spreading” crisis involving anti-Semitic bullying in Victorian state schools.

The boy’s act of kissing another student’s shoes, under threat of being swarmed by several other boys, was filmed, photographed and shared on social media. No disciplinary action has been taken against the group of boys involved in the incident, which took place in a public park. The school and the department have denied having responsibility for the incident, because it did not take place on school grounds.

One of the boys who watched on was later suspended for five days for assaulting the Jewish student in the school locker room. The Jewish boy was punched in the face and left with a bruised back and had skin gouged out of his shoulder.

Meanwhile, a the mother of a five-year-old boy at Hawthorn West Primary said her son was repeatedly taunted and laughed at over his “Bris Mila”, to the point where he began to wet himself in class rather than go to the bathroom.

The mother said one of the most disturbing aspects of the other children’s insults was anti-Semitic language used such as the words ‘you dirty Jew’ and ‘Jewish cockroach’.

_______________________________________

Sidney Morning Herald: […]"We sat down, his parents, the two boys and myself, around the table and explained the velocity of [the bullying] and what it meant to us as parents as far as building bridges between Jews and Muslims in society and not creating division like that photo does," she said.

One of the boys who watched on was later suspended for five days for assaulting the Jewish student in the school locker room. The Jewish boy was punched in the face and left with a bruised back and had skin gouged out of his shoulder, his mother said.

[…] The taunts – which the education department said could not be corroborated because they were not overheard by teachers – led the school to temporarily provide a separate toilet for the boy as a "safety plan", although this plan failed on its second day.

The mother said one of the most disturbing aspects of the other children’s insults was the way they mirrored the anti-Semitic language of the Holocaust.

"The words ‘you dirty Jew’ and ‘Jewish cockroach’, they are such cliches," she said.

"I grew up with Holocaust survivors, I used to go to synagogue with my uncle who was a Holocaust survivor and those were the words, literally, he was taunted with when he was five."

The department conceded last month in an apology letter to the parents that the boy had been laughed at in the toilets by other students on this day and said this was unacceptable.

"While school staff were not able to substantiate that any negative interactions were anti-Semitic in nature, on the basis of those investigations, school staff identified an incident that involved children laughing at [the boy]," department director Barbara Crowe said, "This was not acceptable and would have been an unpleasant experience for [the boy]. I am sorry that this occurred."

But the mother said the school had made an error of judgment by treating the incident as general bullying, not anti-Semitism.

"Why not just say, this is anti-Semitism and talk about it? These are things that happen to different people and different religions," she said.

The parents have lost confidence in Hawthorn West Primary School’s ability to care for their son, and are home schooling him while looking for a new school.

Dvir Abramovich, chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission, said this was part of a disturbing trend of Jewish parents pulling their children out of government schools in Melbourne.

"There is mounting evidence that families are forced to take their children out of public schools and to enrol them in Jewish-day schools due to a growing sense of insecurity and fear that their kids will be harmed simply because of who they are,"

Mr Abramovich has been helping the mother of the 12-year-old boy to find another school for her daughter, because she does not want to send her to Cheltenham Secondary College.

The Education Department has been contacted for comment.

HATE … HATE … HATE in Williamsburg

ROSH HASHANAH
HATE IN WILLIAMSBURG:
Shaitel Yanked Off Woman, Windows Of Shul Smashed; DeBlasio Tweets

YWN.  Another day. More hate.

The latest two hate crimes occurred on Monday, the first day of Rosh Hashanah in Williamsburg.

screenshot from twitter
In the first crime, as can be seen in the attached video footage, a group of thugs are seen smashing a window (noch klinah kristalnacht?) of the Rivnitz Shul on Throop Avenue and Barlett Street. The suspects run up the street, while one of them appears to be on the lookout for anyone coming, while another two suspects are seen throwing objects at the windows of the Shul.

In the second hate attack, a Hasidic woman had her Shaitel yanked off by a person.

Watch the attached video where a women pushing a baby carriage is followed by the suspect, who then pulls off her wig and runs away. The woman is seen placing her hands over her head to cover herself, as she is humiliated in public.

He is seen hiding behind a parked vehicle. (Video at link)

But not to worry, Orthodox Jews can breath easily, as Mayor DeBlasio is threatening to take action. DeBlasio wrote on Twitter “This is a shocking act of hate. We WILL find the perpetrators and hold them responsible. If you have any information, share it with the NYPD.”

Orthodox Jews in New York City have lots of faith in the Mayor. Afterall, he can most definitely list the suspects and the jail sentences handed down following the last 100 hate crimes. Right?

Not.

Meanwhile, if you use the word “illegal alien”, you can now be fined as much as $250,000. Call someone a “dirty Jew”, and get a free pass.

Kids Belong to the Community ??

Why Does The Medical Community Want Access To Our Kids?

By Jefferey Jaxen
In 2016, MSNBC host Melissa Harris Perry made a concerning statement. Discussing public education, Harris Perry said, “We have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families.”
Fast forward three years later, concepts like “kids belong to the community” are being melded into “greater good” public health vaccination talking points from politicians deciding policy.
For the past five years the debate was whether or not parents should vaccinate their kids. Now the devolving debate is whether parents should be removed from the picture entirely when it comes to vaccine decisions. The health community and government representatives are now deeming parents and the need for parental consent ‘a barrier to obtaining vaccination.’
During the 2019 legislative session, New York saw 17 democratic-sponsored vaccine-related bills, two aimed at eliminating the ‘barrier parent.’ One bill sought to allow any child who is at least fourteen years of age to consent to certain immunizations recommended without parental consent. The other bill, which has been filed in each legislative session since 2009, but failed to move forward, would allow a health care practitioner to administer vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases to a minor without the parent’s consent or knowledge. Fortunately, there were enough medical freedom advocates left in the political mix that both New York bill pairs died in committees and failed to move forward.
Washington D.C.’s B23-0171 is active, however. It seeks to add a new section into the existing regulations that would allow a minor child of any age to consent to receive a vaccine. The bill, and its hearing, signaled a new high-water mark towards the removal of parents from some of their children’s most important medical decisions.
During the public hearing in June 2019, pediatrician Dr. Helene Felman, representing Washington D.C.’s chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), stated:
“As a pediatrician, I like the legislation as it stands because it offers the opportunity to capture those young adults who can make informed decisions at technically any age.”
Several other proponents of the bill who testified similarly danced around committing to an age they believed would be appropriate for a child to make their own medical decisions.
When Dr. Felman was asked if doctors’ licensing and certifications were rigorous enough to address this newly proposed medical opportunity—all ages welcomed without your parents— she replied:
“Absolutely. In addition to having a part of our board certification on basic facts and knowledge, we also are required to work on quality improvement endeavors.”
On the strength of those points, Dr. Felman rested her case that there was clearly “a wide breadth of checks and balances.”  Many have noted vaccine safety and knowledge under oath is different than what the general public is told. In 2018 Dr. Felman’s AAP colleague Dr. Teresa Holtrop, president of Michigan’s AAP chapter, took the stand in a custody case to answer some basic ‘facts and knowledge’ about vaccines. Dr. Holtrop admitted she “didn’t know” 42 times in response to basic questions surrounding vaccinations. Watch here:
Hysterical video: (wait for her testimony to begin)

The American Medical Association (AMA) has thrown its full weight behind attempting to remove the parents from medical decisions involving their children.
At its recent June policy meeting, the AMA announced it “will encourage state legislatures to establish comprehensive vaccine and minor consent policies.” The press release continues by stating the AMA “will support state policies allowing minors to override their parent’s refusal for vaccinations.”
The New York and D.C. bills are far from one-off situations. In fact, there appears to be a concerted push from multiple angles attempting to force the idea of eliminating parents from medical decisions.
U.C. Hastings law professor and rabid forced vaccine advocate Dorit Reiss has also recently chimed in on removing barrier parents. Known for publicly suggesting the ideas of criminal penalties for not vaccinating and sending police to enforce vaccination, Reiss’s policy paper was published this month in the Connecticut Law Review.
The paper recommends the creation of “a limited exception to parental decision making authority by permitting certain older minors to provide legally binding consent for childhood vaccinations.” This is first being proposed from a legislative path, however as a backup the paper states, “In the absence of legislation or an existing mature minor doctrine, we recommend that courts adopt a narrow mature minor doctrine allowing capable minors to become vaccinated without parental consent.”
Dorit and her co-author’s vision goes further by having the potential future policy actively hide such interactions from parents.
“Finally, we strongly recommend that the authorizing legislation require that minors’ preferences regarding confidentiality be respected, and in particular, that their vaccination status and medical contacts regarding vaccination not be disclosed to their parents without their consent“
What would this new utopia look like once parents are removed? Parental rights and choice would cease to exist within the context of vaccine decision making.
The information to make proper informed consent, already difficult for adults to obtain, would be limited, constrained and dumbed down further to cater to children with little to no concept of the risks, unsettled science and inconvenient truths surrounding vaccination.
Individual choice would morph into the medical coercion of minors who have little to no awareness of their family or their own personal history of vaccine reactions or contraindications to relay to the vaccine administrator.
The National Vaccine Information Center has submitted testimony in opposition to the active legislation in D.C. Further movement regarding the proposed legislation is expected to be announced soon regarding its next hearing and actions.

Child Mortality: Dying Young (Part II)

INTRO: Life expectancy in the U.S. has fallen for several years in a row, not because we're hitting a cap for lifespans of people in their 80s, but because people are dying in their 20s and 30s. Comparing unfavorably to their counterparts in other high-income nations, Americans lead lives are not just shorter but also less healthy, with a health disadvantage, that begins at birth and extends across the life course.

54% of U.S. children live with at least one chronic health condition, such as diabetes, obesity, and asthma. Neurological disorders were the third leading cause of death as of 2014. In 2017, suicide was the second leading cause of death for children and young adults. For both children and young adults, cancer is consistently within the top three to five causes of death.

Dying Young—Falling Life Expectancy in the U.S. (Part II)
By the Children's Health Defense Team

Life expectancy in the U.S. has fallen for several years in a row, representing the “longest sustained decline in expected lifespan since the tumultuous period of 1915 to 1918.” Comparing unfavorably to their counterparts in other high-income nations, Americans lead lives that are both shorter and less healthy, with a health disadvantage that “begins at birth and extends across the life course.”

Increased death rates in teens and younger adults are key drivers of the recent downward trend in U.S. life expectancy. Stated another way, Americans are not just “dying at a faster rate”—they are dying younger. As a Harvard researcher has stated, “We’re seeing the drop in life expectancy not because we’re hitting a cap [for lifespans of] people in their 80s, [but] because people are dying in their 20s [and] 30s.”

For life expectancy at birth (a key health status indicator), residents of the 36 countries that make up the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) live, on average, 1.7 years longer than Americans; at age 50, U.S. life expectancy continues to trail behind 30 other countries. Moreover, Americans need far more income “to have the same life expectancy as individuals with the highest income” in wealthy countries such as Norway. International data also show that “potential years of life lost” in the U.S. “exceeds the OECD comparable country averages” for all leading causes of death.

Chronic illness
The alarming prevalence of chronic illness and neurodevelopmental disorders in American youth is one of the proximate reasons why so many are dying before their time.  Over half (54%) of U.S. children live with at least one chronic health condition. In addition to prompting serious morbidity, many of these conditions contribute to premature mortality. For example:

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death for 15-44-year-olds and the sixth leading cause of death for those between their mid-40s and mid-50s. The prevalence of diabetes and diabetic kidney disease in the pediatric population has been rising since at least the early 2000s. Researchers note that official statistics vastly underestimate diabetes mortality due to idiosyncracies of death certificate reporting.

A national survey of youth conducted in 2017 reported that almost a third of U.S. high school students were either obese (14.8%) or overweight (15.6%). Examining obesity over the life course, researchers have confirmed that Americans are “getting heavier, younger” and caution that overweight and obesity have “profound implications for future rates of type 2 diabetes and mortality.”

Asthma-related mortality began exhibiting “a substantial, progressive increase” in the 1990s (a reversal of the previous several decades); this trend “stands in contrast to those in most other western countries.”

In addition, rates of pediatric cancer have been increasing since the early 2000s, including in the very youngest children. For both children and young adults, cancer is consistently within the top three to five causes of death. The incidence of colorectal cancer alone is expected to shoot up by 90% in 20-34-year-olds over the next decade.

Neurodevelopmental disorders
A 2016 study in JAMA that examined cause-specific U.S. mortality rates since 1980 found that neurological disorders were the third leading cause of death as of 2014. For people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the risk of premature mortality is double that of the general population. A letter published in a leading scientific journal has suggested that those with autism “die 16 years sooner on average than they otherwise would.”

Researchers note that the “markedly increased” premature mortality evident in ASD coincides with “a multitude of medical conditions.” A recent retrospective study (2004–2014) of ASD adults who died while hospitalized—two-thirds of whom were between ages 18 and 34—bears out this observation. ASD patients, compared to age-matched non-ASD controls, “had a higher risk for having…medical comorbidities at the time of death, including psychoses, other neurological disorders, diabetes, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis collagen vascular disease, obesity, weight loss, fluid and electrolyte disorders, deficiency anemias, and paralysis.” The ASD patients also were more than six times as likely to have epilepsy, and epilepsy represents a frequent aggravating factor in ASD-related deaths. Data from California—a state with top-notch autism data—confirm a “higher than expected rate of mortality in individuals with autism and epilepsy than autism alone.”

In addition, those with ASD are at “substantially heightened risk” for injury-related mortality. A study of almost 1400 fatalities in individuals with autism reported an average age of death of 36.2 years—and 28% of the deaths were attributable to injury-related causes such as suffocation, asphyxiation and drowning.

In the case of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), its association with premature mortality is particularly pronounced in the presence of psychiatric comorbidities and behavioral diagnoses such as “oppositional defiant disorder,” conduct disorders and substance use disorders. Studies also document disproportionate ADHD-related fatalities linked to accidents and “unnatural” causes. For example, adolescents and young adults diagnosed with ADHD have a greater risk of motor vehicle crashes, and children diagnosed with ADHD are at increased risk of fractures, burns and poisoning.

Could overmedication be part of the problem? Although researchers dismiss the short-term risks of the powerful psychotropic drugs prescribed for ADHD, some admit that they know little about the medications’ long-term effects. Cardiovascular symptoms, effects on growth and tics are some of the known—and common—side effects of ADHD medications. This is something to consider given that ADHD was one of the top three drivers of increased spending on child health care between 1996 and 2013; moreover, “Within the mental health and behavioral disorders category, spending on ADHD pharmaceuticals, especially for boys aged 5 to 14 years, was the largest source of spending increases.”

Suicide
Mortality statistics for the U.S. as a whole indicate that  suicide rates are climbing, increasing by 5% over the most recent one-year period for which there are data (2016–2017). Considering teenagers, young Americans are more likely to kill themselves than teens in Japan, most of Europe, Mexico or Israel. Over a less-than-10-year period (2007–2015), the suicide rate for youth aged 15-19 rose by 30% for boys and doubled for girls, setting a 40-year record for the latter. In 2017, suicide was the second leading cause of death for children and young adults ages 10 through 24, surpassing homicide and accounting for roughly one in five deaths; it was also the second leading cause of death for adults ages 25-44 (11% of deaths).

Attempted suicide and suicidal ideation are also common in young people. About one in 13 teens who responded to a national risk behavior survey reported a suicide attempt. Surveys of college students indicate that more than one in eight college students (12%) have seriously considered suicide, and, among those referred for evaluation and treatment, the same proportion has gone on to make an attempt.

To explain suicide trends, many experts cite the opioid epidemic and the epidemic of mental health issues observable among adolescents and young adults. From 2013 to 2016, for example, diagnosed depression increased by 47% in millennials and by a whopping 63% in adolescents. However, a group of Michigan researchers recently argued that individuals at increased risk of suicide have a distinct “immunobiological profile” compared to individuals with depressive symptoms, with pronounced abnormalities in white blood cell (WBC) counts. Skewed WBC counts can be a marker of underlying conditions such as autoimmunity and immune deficiencies.

Common denominator?
What do the overlapping epidemics of chronic illness, autoimmunity, neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health problems have in common? Although it may not be the sole explanation, the overvaccination of American children is a likely—and increasingly well-documented contributor. Vaccination intentionally and artificially activates the immune system, and published evidence links vaccines to immune system alterations (such as abnormal white blood cell counts) of the sort observed in suicidal individuals. There is also considerable experimental evidence linking the immune responses produced by vaccines and vaccine adjuvants to adverse mental health symptoms. The dismal life expectancy data reported by U.S. officials year after year are one more indication that current child health and vaccination policies are in need of a serious overhaul.

Infant Mortality in the U.S. (Part I)

Infant Mortality—US Worse Than 55 Other Countries

By the Children’s Health Defense Team

NOTE:  This article primarily focuses on infant mortality; a follow-up article (Part II) will discuss child and adolescent mortality in greater detail.

The United States spends over $230 billion annually on children’s personal health care, representing about 8.4% of total U.S. health care spending. Spending jumped by 56% between 1996 and 2013—with some of the increase likely covering  vaccine program costs that began “dramatically” escalating in the 1990s—but these substantial outlays are not translating into a rosy health picture for American children.

Instead, leading child health indicators seem to be giving new meaning to the phrase “geography is destiny.” International comparisons show that the U.S. has ranked  lowest among twenty developed nations for child mortality since the 1990s and currently ranks behind 55 other countries worldwide for infant mortality. The U.S. also lags behind other developed countries in terms of the rate at which infant mortality is declining—in fact, infant mortality due to prematurity or low birthweight began trending upward in the late 1980s. At present, U.S.-born children are 76% more likely to die before their first birthday than infants in other wealthy nations—with  1 out of every 270 American babies dying in their first year of life as of 2015. Thus, from infancy on, young Americans are confronted with the challenge of beating terrible odds.

Welcome to the world…
Considering deaths that occur on the first day of life, it is sadly noteworthy that more American newborns  die the day they are born than in any other developed nation. Globally, 68 other countries have a better standing than the U.S. in terms of newborn deaths.

Many of these tragic deaths are related to the higher percentage of premature births that occur in the U.S. compared to other developed countries. Could this have anything to do with the United States’ non-evidence-based administration of vaccines during pregnancy, and influenza vaccines in particular? Babies born to women who received flu shots during pregnancy are at greater risk of preterm birth as well as low birthweight and fetal death. Internationally, researchers have objected to across-the-board influenza vaccination of pregnant women in the absence of “strong and consistent” randomized clinical trial evidence—and in the U.S.,  no vaccines have ever been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “specifically for use during pregnancy to protect the infant”—yet the CDC continues to tell pregnant women that flu shots are safe.

Black babies in the U.S. are at particular risk of dying in their first month or year, with a  2.5 to 2.8 times higher risk of mortality  compared to white infants. Common causes of excess mortality in black infants include perinatal conditions and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Running the first-year-of-life vaccine gauntlet
When it comes to postneonatal deaths of American infants—those that occur between 28 days and one year—SIDS is the leading cause  By definition, SIDS refers to death in a “seemingly normal, healthy infant under one year of age” that is both unexpected and unexplainable, but again, there is mounting evidence that at least some of the phenomenon may be “medically induced” through vaccination. Without even counting the vaccines administered prenatally, American infants receive more vaccines in their first year than infants anywhere in the world. Many of those vaccines are administered in bundles at well-baby visits around two and four months—exactly when nine out of ten SIDS deaths SIDS deaths occur.

U.S. researchers have largely ignored the important question of a potential SIDS-vaccine connection. However, European investigators have examined the issue as it pertains to some combination vaccines. For example, a study by Italian researchers described the case of a three-month-old infant who died within 24 hours of receiving the Infanrix hexa vaccine manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. (The six-in-one vaccine includes antigens for diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type B, poliovirus and hepatitis B.) After examining clinical data, postmortem findings and immunohistochemical and laboratory analyses, the investigators concluded that “acute respiratory failure likely due to post hexavalent immunization-related shock was the cause of death.”

Recently, an independent Italian research group studied the chemical composition profile of Infanrix hexa and was surprised to find that it showed zero evidence of the six antibody-inducing antigens that the vaccine is supposed to provide. Instead, the hexavalent vaccine contained numerous chemical contaminants and toxins, bacterial peptide toxins as well as an “insoluble and indigestible macromolecule” unrecognizable by any protein databases—in short, “a compound with an unknown and unpredictable toxicity and efficacy.”

Another set of Italian researchers conducted histological examinations of over 100 young SIDS victims for whom detailed clinical and environmental information was available; in 12% of the cases, the SIDS deaths occurred within one to seven days of hexavalent vaccination. The authors deemed it plausible that “vaccine components could have a direct role in sparking off a lethal outcome in vulnerable babies.”

Considering precisely this question of “vulnerable babies,” a group of Spanish researchers reviewed clinical and surveillance studies of hexavalent vaccination in infants born premature or low birthweight. Although casually dismissive of most vaccination risks in this delicate subpopulation, the authors nevertheless reported that 13% to 30% of “medically stable” babies with a history of prematurity or low birthweight had experienced an  adverse cardiorespiratory event cessation of breathing or abnormally low heart rate) following just one dose of hexavalent vaccine.

Back in the U.S.
In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) employs evasive semantics to avoid too many troubling questions about the causes of SIDS. It does so by lumping SIDS under the broader three-pronged umbrella of “sudden unexpected infant deaths” (SUID), which separates SIDS events from deaths from “unknown causes” and “accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed” (ASSB). As a result, the agency likes to claim that SIDS rates fell in the 1990s and have remained stationary since then.

However, a 2006 analysis by some of the CDC’s own researchers showed that most of the apparent decline was an artifact of the CDC’s changes in cause-of-death classification away from SIDS in favor of “cause unknown/unspecified” and ASSB. Other factors point to considerable underreporting of SIDS deaths, including reporting anomalies, the inadequacies of death certificates as a source of complete information and the “complicated” and “convoluted” process involved in creating and registering causes of death for public records.

In a surprising concession, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims ruled in 2017 that there was “preponderant evidence” supporting a claim that vaccines “caused or substantially contributed” to a 2011 SIDS death. The court, which has a notoriously high burden of proof, also ruled that the death could not be attributed to non-vaccine-related factors. Unfortunately, the ruling has had no consequential impact on childhood vaccine policies. Au contraire—states like California, New York and Maine are now stomping on the human rights of even the most medically fragile children and sanctimoniously denying that vaccine-related injuries and deaths even occur. Moreover, despite the various studies highlighting hexavalent vaccine dangers, the FDA just saw fit, in December 2018, to approve the U.S.’s first hexavalent pediatric vaccine; Vaxelis, jointly manufactured by Sanofi and Merck, will be made available to the pediatric vaccine market sometime in 2020.

With the disproportionately high rates of premature birth, low birthweight, birth defects and other infant health challenges that prevail in the U.S., policy-makers should be acknowledging that vulnerable babies abound. At the same time, they should be taking note of the fact that vulnerabilities are not always apparent and are not the whole story—more than four in ten sudden unexpected deaths in infancy occur in seemingly healthy babies born full-term. The success of early 20th-century initiatives to reduce infant mortality occurred “before widespread use of vaccination and medical technologies” but instead of learning from history or recognizing the need to avoid exposing young children to unnecessary risks, the U.S. public policy mantra seems to be “full speed ahead.”

Does this all not seem to be a concerted effort . . . . . . . . .
