A new COVID variant is getting to be as reliable as death and taxes. Like the proverbial dinner guest that will never leave, just when we think we can forget about COVID-19, along comes a new and nasty variant. As Americans are beginning to enjoy warmer days and outdoor activities, a new COVID-19 variant is threatening to put a damper on spring celebrations. BA.3.2, a heavily mutated new COVID-19 variant that may be better able to evade immunity from vaccines or prior infection, is now spreading in the United States. Although COVID infections are declining nationally, the BA.3.2 variant is gaining traction around the globe. BA.3.s, aka ‘cicada’,’ emerged over a year ago and slowly simmered until last fall, when it started ramping up in several countries, including the U.S. As of early April, BA.3.2 has been detected in half of U.S. states, the Centers for Disease control said. COVID mutations have long been a concern of medical experts, and indeed these mutations have been bolstered by the failed mRNA “vaccines,” which did little to stop the spread of the virus. Now, it appears, we are grappling with the long-term ramifications of a failed approach to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic: Perhaps more concerning is the variant's slew of genetic changes in its spike protein, which set it apart from other variants circulating, Andrew Pekosz, Ph.D., a virologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, tells TODAY.com. The SARS-CoV-2 virus mutates constantly as it spreads, leading to the emergence of new variants. The most prevalent strains circulating in the U.S. right now are closely related, with slight genetic differences. But BA.3.2 stands out, according to experts. “It has a lot of mutations that may cause it to look different to your immune system,” Pekosz says. These genetic changes have the potential to reduce protection from a previous infection or vaccination, according to a new study published in the CDC's latest Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Your Immune System is Your Best Defense […]
