Rabbi Weissman: Witnesses / Kofrim?

 Witnesses vs. Kofrim

Here is an excerpt from part 41 of the The Prophetic Teachings of Rav Elchonon Wasserman, written 90 years ago, before the Holocaust:

Don’t be misled to think that the present situation is fleeting and will pass; these are empty consolations. We must understand that from heaven they are rousing us. It is similar to one who is sleeping on Yom Kippur eve; we are obligated to awaken him so he shouldn’t freeze. They won’t stop to awaken us and awaken us with greater force until we are completely awakened from our slumber. In heaven they will not give up on the goal they set there until it is realized. So why should we wait until stronger and heavier blows come?

We should know that our leaders who lead us astray have brought us into a state of war with Hashem, and there is only one strategy to be saved from a Holocaust…

Hint: it wasn’t to build a faux-Jewish state with a mighty IDF, all of it controlled by people who lead us astray and wage war against Hashem.

We must understand that today we are living in the period of the footsteps of Moshiach. All the signs about this period, which were transmitted to us in the holy writings and the words of our rabbis of blessed memory, have been fully realized — not one is missing. No one can know how long the birth pangs will last. This is hidden from all who are alive. “The heart does not reveal to the mouth” (Koheles Rabba 12:10). However, it is clear that we have already entered into the midst of this period, which is relatively not far from the birth…

Speaking of waging war against Hashem, the following words were written by someone who calls himself a rabbi and is still respected by many people who consider themselves Torah-observant Jews:

Charedi theology differs from traditional Biblical and rabbinic Judaism. Charedim believe - or purport to believe - that everything is decided by Hashem, and man’s physical, material, worldly actions have no genuine significance.

Hashem decides security. October 7th didn’t happen because the IDF was inadequate in its role, it happened because of people’s aveiros. The IDF is irrelevant; it’s the Torah learning of charedi yeshivos that defends Israel. And Hashem decides parnassah; education is irrelevant.

This is not “just” kefira, but kefira b’ikar. As noted by Rashi on Vayikra 26:15, it is the culmination of a 7-step deterioration process, the final descent of a Jew who has strayed from the Torah and Hashem.

My concern is not that an irrational, intellectually dishonest featherweight writes such things, nor that he has a large following of open atheists and closet atheists who purport to be Orthodox Jews. There are many more weeds than fruit trees, and this is especially true in the footsteps of Moshiach (see Tehillim 92 and Yalkut Shimoni 843). They are not worth engaging. After 120 or when Moshiach comes, whichever happens first, the truth will hit them very, very hard.

No, my concern is that many, many Jews who are sincere about following the Torah are still infected with such poisonous notions, even if they haven’t gone all the way with it. Kefira of this nature is absolutely rampant — within the Orthodox world — even if it isn’t expressed as blatantly and brazenly as this lowlife put it.

Any random page of Tanach and countless teachings of Chazal will rebut this kefira, but in this week’s Torah class I addressed it directly with a wealth of powerful sources. The class is embedded above and on Rumble here.

"Recovering Zionists Anonymous" (video) is now also available on Rumble here.
