JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A particularly moving event took place today at the Western Wall Plaza, as the first regular draft battalion of the charedi Chashmonaim Brigade completed their beret march in a festive and moving ceremony.
The soldiers marched at first light, joined by their families who met them at Jaffa Gate, and continued together to the end of the march. They then participated in a Shacharit morning prayer and the beret-awarding ceremony. The soldiers had completed a full combat training track: four months of basic training and four months of advanced training as part of their preparation to become combat soldiers in the brigade.
This marks a major milestone for the newly formed Chashmonaim Brigade, which was established to provide a combat service path that is strictly kosher – both in content and in spirit. While the brigade already includes reservists, this is the first regular group to complete full combat training.
The IDF views the Chashmonaim Brigade as a unique solution to the needs of the charedi community, and as a gateway to the wider enlistment of devout young men into meaningful military service. The new graduates will become the NCOs of the next cadre of Chashmonaim recruits, leading by example as the IDF seeks to create a core of charedi officers for the brigade.
