BALTIMORE (VINnews) — The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV) published an open letter Monday rejecting a recent statement titled “A Call for Moral Clarity, Responsibility, and a Jewish Orthodox Response in the Face of the Gaza Humanitarian Crisis.”
The CJV letter accuses the earlier statement of ignoring “critical facts” about the war against Hamas and misrepresenting Orthodox Judaism, noting that its signatories were largely affiliated with Open Orthodoxy.
While the earlier statement claimed Israel bore some responsibility for civilian suffering in Gaza, the CJV letter condemned that framing as offering “unintended support to antisemitic inversions of… obvious truth,” asserting that Hamas alone bears responsibility for the conflict and humanitarian toll.
The letter also criticized the omission of Palestinian terror attacks, while highlighting that the original signatories included women, openly gay rabbis, and graduates of Open Orthodox institutions — groups CJV said are not recognized by mainstream Orthodox authorities.
“It was important that we stand up for the truth, when the reality was painfully distorted, and both Israel and traditional Judaism misrepresented,” said CJV Executive Vice President Rabbi Yaakov Menken.
Introduced just before the weekend, the CJV letter quickly drew more than twice as many endorsements as the original statement, with 160 rabbinic signatories from the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Israel. .

B'H that Orthodox orgs. are starting, hopefully, to stand up against all these mock orthodox groups who make everything kosher. What's next, kosher davar acher (chazir)? If there was real common sense, these groups should never have been establsihed, calling themselves kosher but acting and behaving like chazeirim!
