Shalom Pollack — Tel Aviv - Yaffo , a New Perspective

 Shalom friends,

On Tuesday, March 18 we will experience an enjoyable, educational, and inspirational day in Tel Aviv - Yafo.

As it was apparent that the British had no intention of relinquishing its hold on  "Palestine".

The "Irgun" and the "Lechi", both small groups of determined patriots, challenged and finally defeated the Empire. These brave men and women faced death on all sides; from the cynical and perfidious  British occupation, from bloodthirsty  Arabs, and sadly, also from the Jewish establishment who hounded them and handed them over to the British occupiers to be incarcerated,  exiled, and hanged.

Their unique role in our history has been squashed by the pre and post-state establishment.

Today their selfless deeds of heroism are dramatically told in two small but powerful museums.
Few are aware of these precious jewels let alone visit them.
We shall, IY”H.

We will have lunch in a popular Humus and falafel vegetarian (kosher) restaurant. The quaint eatery captures the ambiance and feel of Yaffo today.

We will be guests of the wonderful young of the "Garin Torani"  communityof Yaffo.
We will be taken to the roof of the yeshiva building for an overview of Yaffo and an explanation of the social/cultural scene today.

Yaffo is a "mixed" city. The very hostile city that housed the Iraqi army was liberated in 1948 by the Irgun, and most of its residents fled. Jewish immigrants who were expelled from their homes in Arab lands moved in.

With time, the Arab population became more aggressive and the more affluent Jews departed leaving an older, weaker Jewish population behind. It continued to dwindle and live uncomfortably with their growingly emboldened Arab neighbors. Synagogues closed and  Jewish life began to disappear.  This process was not addressed by the government so young Jewish families moved in to stem the tide of Jewish despair and abandonment.

We will have a guided tour of the neighborhood by one of the wonderful young men of the Garin Torani community.
We shall learn of the challenges, accomplishments, and vision for this embattled Jewish community.

Finally, we will have an opportunity to walk along the beach before sundown.
