Rabbi Winston: Parshas Vayechi and The World To Come 2

Ya’akov called for his sons and said, “Gather yourselves and I will tell you what will happen to you at the end of days.” (Bereishis 49:1)

WELL IT HAD been my plan,” Ya’akov told his sons, the 12 Tribes, “to tell you what was going to happen to you at the end of days, but apparently G–D has other plans.”

Talk about disappointment. Who doesn’t want to know what is supposed to happen at the End-of-Days, especially WHEN? It’s one thing to try and decipher obscure sources. It’s something altogether different to hear it from a prophet who got his information directly from G–D Himself.

“But father,” they asked, “why would you lose the prophecy?”

“I’m wondering that myself,” Ya’akov told them. “Perhaps, G–D forbid, there is something unfit from my bed, just as Yishmael was born to Avraham, and Eisav to my father Yitzchak?”

The brothers all looked at each other. Each one was sure that they had done teshuvah for any sin they had committed, especially for the sale of Yosef. So they answered Ya’akov with what would eventually become the first verse of the “Shema”  once the Torah was given: “Hear O Israel, the Lord our G–D, the Lord is One!”

Ya’akov looked carefully at his sons. He knew what they meant. They were telling him, “Just as [G–D is] one in your heart, so too there is only one in our hearts.” They were saying, “We have learned our lesson about Hashgochah Pratis after the episode of Yosef, how G–D works behind the scenes and that He can work in mysterious ways.”

It was the right thing to say, but still, Ya’akov wondered if it was as true as they thought. He became cautious, and answered them with, “Blessed be the Name of His glorious kingdom forever!”, what would later become the second verse of the “Shema.”

“Hmm,” he thought to himself, over three millennia later. Though he had seen the Gemora about Ya’akov and his sons many times, he had always been left with a question. “So, why DID Ya’akov Avinu lose the prophecy in the end, if everything was as it was supposed to be? Was Ya’akov’s response positive, or negative? Is there something the Gemora is not telling us, or did G–D just decide not to reveal anything about Acharis HaYomim?”

Year-after-year he read the story, and year-after-year the same question came up for him. He would never have found his answer had it not been for Hashgochah Pratis. Though he did not learn Kabbalah very much at the time, he had reason one day to look into the Zohar, regarding a different topic altogether. That’s when he “chanced” upon the following:

Ya’akov wanted to establish the “Mystery of Unity” below, and composed the 24 letters of, “Boruch Shem kevod malchuso l’olam va-ed.” He didn’t make it 25 letters since the Mishkan had yet to be built. (Zohar 2:139b)

“This says it,” he said quietly to himself. “According to this, Ya’akov Avinu’s response to his sons WASN’T so positive after all.”

Though he liked learning with others, he especially enjoyed learning with himself. Not just BY himself, but WITH himself. He would literally “talk out” his learning with himself as he would with a chavrusa. It was the way to involve himself in a matter emotionally as well as intellectually, making for much better appreciation and memory retention.

At first, it got him some “interesting” looks from others, who wondered if he was somewhat mentally-imbalanced. Years later, it got him looks of respect and admiration, once people realized how much more learned it made him.

“So,” he said, thinking as he spoke, “perhaps the brothers understood Ya’akov’s reply to be acceptance of their sincerity . . . But, Ya’akov, it seems from the Zohar, sensed that some level of unity was still missing . . . and would remain missing until the Jewish people would later build the Mishkan . . .”

He read more.

Once the Mishkan was built the first word was “completed” . . . and it says, “G–D spoke to him from the Appointed Tent, saying . . .” (Va-yikra 1:1), which is 25 letters. (Zohar, Teru-mah 139b)

He reached for a Chumash and turned to Parashas Vayikra. He had no reason to doubt the Zohar, but he liked to verify these things for himself. Looking at the first verse of the parsha, he started counting the letters from after, “And He called to Moshe,” “1, 2, 3, 4,” and he kept going to, “24 . . . and, yup, 25 letters!”

He sat back in his chair and wondered what the Zohar meant. “ ‘The Mystery of Unity’ ”? he asked out loud to himself. “What’s THAT?! . . . And what does it have to do with the END-OF-DAYS?!”

Without noticing, he got up and began pacing back-and-forth, oblivious to his surroundings and the other people learning around him. The longer he paced, the deeper he went into his mind in search of something, ANYTHING that he might have seen that could help him unravel the mystery about the “Mystery.”

Nope, nothing came to mind—at first. But, just before he mentally “turned around” and returned to the world around him, he recalled seeing one thing, years ago, that sounded just like the idea. Now he just had to remember where he saw it.

“Where, where, where . . .” he said to himself, pacing again. “Where . . . did . . . I see . . . that? . . . “Where . . . did . . . I see . . . that?” he kept saying, as if doing so would somehow resurrect the memory, which it usually did.

He froze for a moment. He had remembered, AND he had realized: “The unity the Zohar speaks about is not with respect to the Jewish people themselves per se,” he said, as if sharing the insight with someone else. “It is with respect to G–D’s Name! It’s about the unification of His Name!” he said enthusiastically, hitting the table at the same time and getting unwanted attention.

As he heard himself speak, he felt so silly. It was the most obvious thing in the world to him now. “That’s why the brothers answered Ya’akov’s query with the Shema,” he said animatedly. “It was the ONLY answer that made sense for the question their father had REALLY asked them: If I can’t tell you about the End-of-Days then you aren’t relevant to them. If you aren’t relevant to them, then  you have yet to FULLY unify G–D’s Name. What’s the REAL story here?” (Excerpted from “Insights from the Weekly Torah Reading in Discussion: Bereishis, Parashas Vayechi, available through Amazon, and no Volume 2 on Shemos as well).

CONNECTING THE DOTS
Issue #12: The World-to-Come

First of all, one of the first things Rashi says at the beginning of his Torah commentary is the whole WORLD was made for Torah. He bases himself upon the verse itself and the Midrash. This means that whatever happens in history, every last detail of it and no matter how distant it seems from ANY Torah purpose, is for the sake of Torah.

How far does this idea go? The Talmud talks about this as well. It portrays how, on the final day of judgment, G–D will judge ALL the nations. Rome, being the mightiest (at least at the time of the Talmud) will go first.

When G–D will ask the Romans, “Nu, how did you justify YOUR existence?” they will claim that everything they built was just to allow the Jewish people to learn Torah. G–D will snap back at them and say, “World-class fools! Everything you built was for your own benefit!” and off they will go, head held low, as will all the rest of the nations that will try and pull the same shtik.

It is the Brisker Rav who pointed out something very telling. He asked why G–D only called them fools, and not liars. He answers, because they weren’t liars. Everything they did was for the sake of the Jewish people and Torah, as Rashi explains in Chumash. But, they were FOOLS for thinking that they could convince G–D that this had been their intention all along.

But, as the Talmud points out, G–D does not let any kindness go unrewarded, even if it wasn’t intended as a kindness. If it did good anyhow, the person or nation that did it has to be rewarded somewhat, so that when history comes to an end, G–D will “owe” them nothing. If they’re not going to the World-to-Come, then they have to get paid off in this world.

Even if they ARE going to go to the World-to-Come, they can still get rewarded here. Only the Jewish people have to wait until the World-to-Come to receive their reward for mitzvos, making what they receive in this world “tzedakah.” Non-Jews can receive reward in this world as well, since not being commanded in mitzvos, they can’t receive as much reward for them as one who IS commanded.

Which brings us back to people like Bill Gates and those like him. Of course they would find all of this silly, ridiculous, perhaps even offensive. THEIR success was for the sake of TORAH? What about their genius . . . self-sacrifice . . . their . . . their . . .

Go ahead. Make a list. But, for every reason you come up with to explain why THEY have been so successful, there are millions of others who have done the exact same thing, but have not even come close financially to people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Jeff Bizos, etc. This is G–D’s doing, and as the Torah and Talmud state, it is for the sake of Torah.

But did we not just say that a person who is commanded to do a mitzvah and does it is rewarded more than one who does a mitzvah he has no obligation to do? Then why are these unwitting supporters of Torah so incredibly rewarded?

And therein lies the crux of the matter. The only reason why we can even ASK this question is because of how LITTLE we know about the WORTH of a mitzvah. If we knew better, we’d be asking instead, “WHAT?! HE ONLY RECEIVED 137 BILLION DOLLARS FOR INCIDENTALLY SUPPORTING TORAH?!”

It’s probably WHY G–D is giving people who support Torah so much money. We’re so in the dark about Olam HaBa that we treat mitzvos EXTREMELY casually. We know it is coming, but having nothing in human experience with which to compare it and say, we’re going to get something like that, and more.

When you get up in the morning and wash “Neggel Vasser,” how much reward do you get? What about when you wash your hands before eating bread? How about for praying, or any of the other mitzvos you might do throughout the course of your day, your week, your life? And what about special mitzvos like Shabbos? What’s the reward for them?

Who knows? One thing is for certain. Whatever the reward is, it is SO great that there is no way to really receive it in this world. We’re not even equipped to enjoy THAT much pleasure. After all, if billions of dollars is what some entrepreneur gets for doing a “mitzvah” he doesn’t have to do, without even having any intention to do it, then what kind of reward must a mitzvah like a halachic washing of the hands net if the person is commanded to do it, and intends to do that mitzvah?

Exactly. So if you have difficulty relating to hundreds of billions of dollar as recompense for a mitzvah because it seems SO disproportionate, don’t worry, it IS. A single mitzvah is worth a LOT more than billions of dollars, and all the money in the world! In fact, this is what the rabbis are telling us when they say:

One hour of pleasure in the World-to-Come is better than all the time in this world. (Pirkei Avos 4:16)

Widespread anti-Semitism in The Netherlands
After the Holocaust many people consider anti-Semitism not to be politically correct. Thus anti-Semitism often morphs into anti-Israelism, which does not carry the same stigma. Seventy-seven percent of Jews interviewed said that antisemitic sentiment is rife in the Netherlands. When asked where these anti-Jewish sentiments appear, 82% responded “social media”. Fifty-nine percent referred to the media, i.e., many of the Dutch TV stations and leading newspapers.

Fifty-two percent of respondents said that anti-Semitism manifests itself in the streets and 42% in politics. Although respondents were not asked to identify which political parties promote anti-Semitism, it is evident that the prime promoter is a small Muslim party, Denk, which holds 3 seats out of 150 in the Lower House of the Parliament. In 2017, CIDI (The Center for Information and Documentation about Israel) has accused Denk of anti-Semitism in parliamentary questions and remarks. arutzsheva

US Approves Sale of Patriot Missiles to Turkey
United States to sell $3.5 billion in missiles to Turkey. The United States on Wednesday approved the sale of $3.5 billion in missiles to Turkey, offering an ultimatum after US outrage over the NATO ally's plans to buy from Russia, AFP reports. The move is seen as a counter move to Turkey’s purchase of S-400 anti-ballistic missile defense systems from Russia, which has long been an issue of contention between Turkey and its allies, particularly the United States. Military experts are concerned that the deployment of S-400s would put the security of allied weapon systems, particularly F-35 aircraft and radar facilities, in danger. arutzsheva [oh, and they won’t use them against Israel?]

WHITE HOUSE CONFIRMS US WITHDRAWAL FROM SYRIA
Trump: 'We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.'A US official told Reuters that all State Department personnel in Syria will be evacuated from the country within 24 hours, and that all US forces will depart within 60 to 100 days, once the final operation against ISIS has been completed. US President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday afternoon that his only reason to have US troops in Syria was to defeat ISIS, a mission which he said the US has accomplished. “We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.”

DOES THIS MAKE SENSE? The US move comes as Turkey threatens a new offensive against the US-backed Kurdish forces in northern Syria. Erdogan has repeatedly threatened to attack the YPG Kurdish militia operating east of the Euphrates River. The YPG has been battling ISIS with the assistance of the US. arutzsheva SO THE US TO SEND PATRIOT MISSILE TO TURKEY?? Bloomberg

Rabbi Kahana: Irrelevance is Irreverence

BS”D
Parashat Va’ye’chi
Rabbi Nachman Kahana

IRRELEVANCE IS IRREVERENCE

In the last parasha of the Torah, Zot Habracha, Moshe blesses every tribe, except for one – Shimon; because of their sinful conduct with the Midianite women. The implication was that Shimon would no longer merit a tribal area in the holy land, thus relegating Shimon to irrelevancy in future Jewish history. Rashi relates that Yehuda came to Shimon’s rescue by praying to HaShem and begging Moshe to reconsider his position. Moshe did so, allotting Shimon an enclave within the tribal area of Yehuda consisting of several cities but no wide spaces of land. But at least Shimon retained a degree of relevancy.
The rejection of a Jew from the mainstream of our nation deems him irrelevant for our future, and irrelevancy is synonymous with a wasted life in this world, with limited merits in the next.
To my brothers and sisters in Chutz La’aretz:
Now that no one is listening, let’s have a candid conversation about us, we in Eretz Yisrael and you in galut.
Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers 3,1) quotes the teaching of Rabbi Akiva Ben Mehal’lel which is customarily recited at a funeral procession:
הסתכל בשלשה דברים ואי אתה בא לידי עבירה דע מאין באת ולאן אתה הולך ולפני מי אתה עתיד ליתן דין וחשבון

Seriously ponder three things and you will not fall into sin: 1. From where you came; the humble biological beginnings from which you were conceived, 2. Where you are going: to a grave, and 3. Before whom will your soul give a calculation and reckoning of your deeds: before the Almighty.
I would humbly contribute an additional set of alternative considerations:
  1. From where you came: from the revelation at Mount Sinai with Moshe, from liberating the holy land with Yehoshua, from establishing the monarchy with David and from building the Bet Hamikdash with Melech Shlomo, 2. Where are you going: what is the path that you are taking in the short years that HaShem grants you in this life? and 3. Before whom will your soul give a calculation and reckoning of your deeds: before the Almighty.
Numbers 1 and 3 are intended to impact heavily upon 2, what path are you taking in the short years that HaShem grants you in this life.
I will return to this.
Last week two Israeli soldiers, Yuval Mor Yosef and Yosef Kohen were murdered by an Arab terrorist near the settlement of Givat Asaf.
Yosef Kohen’s stepfather Rabbi Eliyahu Merav of Yerushalayim Bet Shemesh (Yosef’s father passed away) was interviewed by the media. The rabbi is a most impressive figure, with a full flowing white beard and distinguished Jewish face. The rabbi is a very modest man. When asked, he answered that he too served in Tzahal. The following day Rabbi Merav’s past was revealed to the media. He was born in kibbutz Bet Alfa in the Jezreel Valley which belonged to the now defunct Hashomer Hatzair radical Marxist Communist movement – where Hashem was not permitted to enter the front gate. Rabbi Merav was a fighter pilot who fought in the Yom Kippur war. At some point he found Hashem, left the kibbutz and was drawn to the Breslav ideology.
This very impressive man unintentionally became a star. The interviewer asked Rabbi Merav; who are you? To which he answered, “I’m an Israeli”. In Rabbi Merav’s mind, to be an Israeli means to cling to the Torah and to Hashem, and to serve the Jewish nation in every way.
He related that the pain his family is now undergoing is tremendous. “Yosef was a pure soul, genuine, and beautiful. He was a sacrifice for all of Israel. We sent him to the army as a messenger for the family”. Rabbi Merav said, “Yosef observed the Torah completely. He understood that at this time, unfortunately, we have to maintain a powerful army. We have enemies who wish to kill us, literally. They don’t understand that the nation of Israel is everlasting; no one can destroy us. We are the children of God. So, we sent Yosef, our dear son, to be one of the people that creates the everlasting chain. May he rest in peace”.
Rabbi Merav related what happened at the last Shabbat meal before Yosef’s murder. “I asked the family that each one tell one thing for which he or she is thankful to HaShem. Yosef said, “I am thankful to HaShem for giving me the merit to protect Am Yisrael”.
Yosef, and indeed all the Jews in Eretz Yisrael are relevant to the future of the Jewish nation. Even in their death Yosef Kohen and Yuval Mor Yosef are very relevant to the future of this nation because of the influence they have on the millions of Israelis who read about them.
The magic word of a Jew’s life is relevance; to be a link in the eternal chain that unites us with our great past and great future.
The Jewish communities in the galut are irrelevant to our future. The Rosh Yeshiva of Lakewood gives great Torah discourses and is greatly relevant to the student body of Lakewood; however, Lakewood Yeshiva itself is irrelevant to the future of our people. The heads of the yeshivot in Cleveland and Baltimore are great role figures for their yeshivot, however, their yeshivot are irrelevant to the future of our people. All these yeshivot and Jewish communities in the galut are exercises in futility because they are historically irrelevant.
One might be the kingpin in his community; the mainstay of Jewish life in Houston, Texas or Monroe NY, but these places are only dots on a map which are irrelevant to the future generations of our people, and their communities will probably no longer exist in a few decades.
Taken all together, the net spiritual input and mighty efforts on the part of the spiritual leaders in the galut can be compared to a vehicle whose transmission is in neutral and the driver pushes the accelerator through the floor. It makes a lot of noise but goes nowhere! Full gas in neutral!
Now dear reader you might ask, how will my aliya make a difference? How can I personally achieve relevancy to the future of God’s people?
The Gemara in Ketubot 103b describes the impressive funeral of Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi:
ההוא יומא דאשכבתיה דרבי, נפקא בת קלא ואמרה: כל דהוה באשכבתיה דרבי מזומן הוא לחיי העולם הבא.

On the day when Rebbi (Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi) died, a voice came from heaven saying, “All who are present at the funeral of Rebbi have merited to be included in the world to come”.
The Gemara refers not only to those who actively participated in the funeral by saying a eulogy or any other necessary activity, but also to those who were passively present, because their participation and identification with what was occurring was sufficient to grant them a place in Olam Haba.
All Jews now in Medinat Yisrael, even those who fill a passive role in society, are relevant to our future by their very identification with the rebuilding of the Jewish state.
In conclusion:
Observant Jews in the galut have made impressive strides in building their sub-cultures within gentile societies. However, since the future of our nation rests only on the efforts of the Jews in Eretz Yisrael, the Jewish communities in the galut are irrelevant to our future. On the 5th of Iyar 5708, the day the Medina was declared, HaShem lowered the curtain on the galut and let it begin to fade into oblivion.
The great halls of Torah study in the galut could easily become relevant to our future if they would actively encourage their students to come on aliya; but unfortunately, the winds that blow in those institutions are not directed eastward, their orientation is to seek out the faults of our Medina rather than “see the good of Yerushalayim”.

The World To Come – Prepare in This World

The World To Come

Rabbi Pinchas Winston – The World To Come

When the Talmud speaks about the WTC (World-to-Come), it refers to the place that “no eye has even seen except for G–D’s (*Yeshayahu 64:4)” (*Brochos 34b). The Maharal says that this is the reason why such a central concept such as the WTC is not mentioned in the Torah. The Torah is prophecy, what Moshe Rabbeinu was able to envision, and that did not include Olam HaBa (Gevuros Hashem).

The Leshem discusses the various stages of the WTC, but mostly in terms of the shifting positions of the sefiros as Creation reverses itself. History has moved away from G–D, which is why people can deny His existence. Once Moshiach comes, Creation will start moving back in the direction of its Source, and becoming increasingly more spiritual as it does. But what does that mean for us?

The Zohar his more explicit about what it is going to look like in the WTC, and what will happen once we get there. The sefer “Yesod v’Shoresh HaAvodah” relies upon these sources to encourage people to work hard in life to earn a place there. But it is not clear whether or not the Zohar is to be taken literally, or if it is just speaking about the unexperienced in terms of what we do recognize.

The truth is, we have no idea what to expect after 6000, and it is VERY hard to relate to something you know nothing about.

[O]ne of the first things Rashi says at the beginning of his Torah commentary is the whole WORLD was made for Torah. He bases himself upon the verse itself and the Midrash. This means that whatever happens in history, every last detail of it and no matter how distant it seems from ANY Torah purpose, is for the sake of Torah.

Only the Jewish people have to wait until the World-to-Come to receive their reward for mitzvos, making what they receive in this world “tzedakah.”

My Jewish Learning

the Mishnah (Sanhedrin 10:1) states that one who denies the resurrection will have no share in the World to Come, upon which the Talmud (Sanhedrin 90a) comments that this severe punishment is meted out to him on the principle of measure for measure; since he denies the resurrection it is only just that he does not rise at the resurrection. In this passage, at least, the World to Come is identified with the resurrection, though it is not absolutely certain that the Mishnah itself identifies the two so closely.

In the Tosefta (Sanhedrin 13:2) there is a debate between Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Joshua on whether the World to Come is reserved for Jews or whether this blissful state is the reward of Gentiles as well. Rabbi Joshua holds that “the righteous of all peoples have a share in the World to Come” and this became the official view of Judaism

The Mishnah (Bava Metzia 2:11) rules that if a man’s father and his teacher have lost something, he should first try to restore the article lost by his teacher, since a father brings his child into this world whereas a teacher of the Torah brings his students to the World to Come. In Ethics of the Fathers (4:16) it is said that this world is like a vestibule before the World to Come. “Prepare yourself in the vestibule, that you may enter into the hall of the palace.”

“In the World to Come there is no eating nor drinking nor propagation nor business nor jealousy nor hatred nor competition, but the righteous sit with their crowns on their heads feasting on the brightness of the Shekhinah” (Berakhot 17a). Yet the Jerusalem Talmud (Kiddushin 4:12) quotes the same teacher, Rav, who is so eloquent on the purely spiritual nature of bliss in the Hereafter, as saying that in the World to Come a man will be obliged to give an account and a reckoning before the judgment seat of God for every legitimate pleasure he denied himself in this world.

Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato

Moses Hayyim Luzzatto’s The Path of the Upright, compiled in the eighteenth century, is typical of the other‑worldly approach. Luzzatto begins his guide to holy living with these words:

“It is the foundation of saintliness and the perfect worship of God for a man to realize what constitutes his duty in his world and to which aim he is required to direct all his endeavors throughout his life. Now our Sages, of blessed memory, have taught us that man was created only to find delight in the Lord and to bask in the radiance of His Shekhinah for this is the true happiness and the greatest of all possible delights. The real place in which such delight can be attained is the World to Come, for this has been prepared to this very purpose. But the way to attain to this desired goal is this world. This world, the Sages remark, is like a vestibule before the World to Come. The means by which man reaches this goal are the precepts God, blessed be He, has commanded us and the place in which the precepts are to be carried out is only in this world. Man is put here in order to earn with the means at his command the place that has been prepared for him in the World to Come.”

Luzzatto concludes this section of his work by saying that man is tempted in this life both by prosperity and by adversity and adds: “If he is valorous and wins the battle from every side, he becomes the perfect man who will have the merit of becoming attached to his Creator. Then he will emerge from the vestibule of this world to enjoy the Light of Life.”

China and Russia – Operation Z Machine

Controlling the Ionosphere*

China and Russia band together on controversial heating experiments to modify the atmosphere
The countries are testing a technology for possible military application, say Chinese scientists involved in the project Militaries have been in a race to control the ionosphere, which allows radio signals to bounce long distances for communication, for decades

A total of five experiments were carried out in June. One, on June 7, caused physical disturbance over an area as large as 126,000 sq km (49,000 square miles), or about half the size of Britain.
The modified zone, looming more than 500km (310 miles) high over Vasilsursk, a small Russian town in eastern Europe, experienced an electric spike with 10 times more negatively charged subatomic particles than surrounding regions. Read More: scmp (South China Morning Post)

Operation Z machine:

China’s next big weapon in the nuclear ‘arms race’ could create clean fuel – or deadly bombs
The Chinese military is building a test facility to simulate thermonuclear explosions on a much greater scale than comparable US centres. Information from the experiments could give scientists a much clearer picture of how weapons perform under extreme conditions

Deep in the heart of southwest China’s mountainous Sichuan province, the military is building a machine to simulate thermonuclear explosions on an unprecedented scale.

It’s been described as a Chinese version of America’s “Z machine” – formally known as the Z Pulsed Power Facility – a giant wheel-like device developed by the United States to see how particles react under extreme radiation and magnetic pressure.

Z machines have been used in the development of nuclear weapons, from conventional warheads to the pure fusion bomb – a hydrogen bomb that can in theory be made in any size, cost a fraction of today’s nuclear stockpile and burn “cleanly” without producing radioactive fallout.

And for decades, the Z machine at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has led the way in the field.

But now Chinese researchers are trying to build a machine that will produce much more electricity to create much more extreme environments for testing weapons, allowing scientists to delve deeper into the nuclear unknown. scmp

The ionosphere is the ionized part of Earth's upper atmosphere, from about 60 km (37 mi) to 1,000 km (620 mi) altitude, a region that includes the thermosphere and parts of the  mesosphere and exosphere. The ionosphere is ionized by solar radiation. It plays an important role in atmospheric electricity and forms the inner edge of the magnetosphere. It has practical importance because, among other functions, it influences radio propagation to distant places on the Earth.

A GooD Question: If our Sun is no longer emitting light, and the PTB (powers to be) have created a **SunSimulator to light our Earth, how is the Ionosphere affected? And how does this affect the Z Machine?
