Eliezer Meir Saidel — Jewish Democratic Leadership – Korach

Dedicated in loving memory of Nadav Elchanan Knoller הי"ד, ז"ל, my next-door neighbor and friend, who fell this week in Gaza.

It is impossible to read the parshiyot in sefer Bamidbar and not feel a chill run down the spine. Until about a year ago, the subject matter was in the realm of theory. In light of recent events, however, it has transformed into an almost blow-by-blow reflection of the reality we are currently experiencing on a daily basis.

Studying the dynamics and mechanics of these parshiyot is crucial to uncovering the truth behind the façade of the period in which we are living, so that we can develop strategies and solutions to achieve resolution.

At the heart of parshat Korach lies a power struggle over the leadership of Am Yisrael. Parshat Korach is a template for the process of assuming leadership - what is effective, what is acceptable, what is inevitable and … what is not.

Everyone knows the basic story of Korach. He was a very wealthy man. There are various opinions on how he became rich.

The first (שמות רבה ה, יח) says that the first day Pharaoh enlisted Am Yisrael in his "national building project", he offered them astronomical sums for whatever bricks they could produce. Everyone wanting to make a fast buck, exerted a Herculean effort to make as many bricks as possible. Korach, who was very smart, made only one brick. The following day, Pharaoh enslaved Am Yisrael and demanded they produce the same number of bricks as they had the previous day when offered money. If they could not meet the quota, Pharaoh cemented their children into the building instead of the bricks. Since Korach only had to make one brick a day, he had time to make extra bricks, which he sold at a pretty penny to anyone who could not meet their quota. He thus accumulated a vast fortune (capitalizing off the misfortune of his fellow Jews).

The second opinion (Pesachim 119a) says that in Egypt, Yosef buried three treasures. One was discovered by Korach, the second by Antoninus and the third will be discovered in the future when Mashiach comes. It doesn't say that Korach discovered the treasure by accident. He knew of the treasure and actively went hunting for it.

A third opinion (במדבר רבה יח, טו) says that Korach was in charge of Pharaoh's treasuries and he stole money from Pharaoh. The Maggid of Dubno (משלי יעקב, פרשת קרח) says that by doing so, he in fact stole from Am Yisrael, because when all the riches of Egypt floated up after קְרִיעַת יַם סוּף, Am Yisrael collected them and these riches were diminished because Korach had stolen part of them.

Albeit not in a savory way, we see that Korach was very astute in monetary affairs and managed to accumulate a vast fortune.

Korach was part of the family of Kehat, the bearers of the Aron HaBrit. This task was not entrusted to anyone who was not of a very high spiritual level. It was an extremely hazardous task and Korach, who at this point was over 50, had already completed a successful "tour of duty" in the Mishkan and emerged intact. This gives us some insight into his spiritual level. Chazal also tell us that Korach had powers of Ruach HaKodesh and the reason he decided to go up against Moshe was because he saw that Shmuel HaNavi would be descended from his bloodline. He thought it was due to his merit, but it ended up being in the merit of his sons who did tshuva and did not perish with their father.

We already got a hint that Korach was smart (with the bricks). We also see from Chazal that he was (almost) as knowledgeable as Moshe when it came to halacha. From the טְעָנוֹת he put forth, with the techelet, etc. we see that he was fully adroit with halacha. He was also a master strategist. He could plan multiple steps ahead, like in a chess game, anticipating Moshe's responses and preparing counter responses to them.

Korach saw himself as a candidate to lead Am Yisrael. He believed he possessed all the qualifications necessary (rich, smart, a masterful strategist, a highly elevated spiritual level, Ruach HaKodesh, Shmuel HaNavi descended from him, etc.). He believed that he was on a par, or better than Moshe and Aharon, to lead Am Yisrael.

And he might have been, except for a few "minor" issues.

If Korach felt that he was equivalent, or better than Moshe and Aharon to lead Am Yisrael, why did he not tender his candidacy back in Egypt, when Am Yisrael were still enslaved? Why did he wait for this specific point in time to launch an election campaign?

Back in Egypt, before Moshe returned from his sojourn with Yitro, Aharon was the spiritual leader of Am Yisrael and then (and later, in the Midbar), he was much loved by Am Yisrael. Korach never challenged Aharon back then. When Moshe returned to Egypt and said "I am the גּוֹאֵל", why did Korach not respond, "What about me? I am also fit to be the גּוֹאֵל!" At this point, the primary issue that occupied Korach was accumulating wealth.

The reason is that back then, Korach knew he did not stand a chance. First of all, he was the son of Yitzhar. Yitzhar was not Kehat's firstborn, Amram was (בְּנֵי קְהָת עַמְרָם יִצְהָר חֶבְרוֹן וְעֻזִּיאֵל). He did not have a hereditary preference to the position, Aharon and Moshe, sons of Amram, did. Second of all Aharon was loved by Am Yisrael, Korach wasn't – he was busy making money off their misery. Thirdly, Moshe was performing all these signs and miracles, Korach wasn't.

So, what had changed since then? Why did he suddenly think he had a chance?  The answer is, he perceived that Moshe was in a position of weakness. Two weeks ago, in Beha'alotcha we read that Moshe could no longer bear the complaints of Am Yisrael, which led to HKB"H giving some of Moshe's power to the seventy elders. A consequence of this was that Eldad and Meidad prophesied that Moshe would die and Yehoshua would lead Am Yisrael into Eretz Yisrael. This was followed by the episode of the meraglim, leaving Am Yisrael in a depression that they would have to remain in the Midbar for 40 years. It is at this point that Korach pops out of the woodwork.

Rashi says that the trigger was that Moshe appointed Elitzafan ben Uziel as nasi over the family of Kehat, passing over Korach, who seemingly had preference, being the son of Yitzhar, who was older than Uziel. Perhaps that was the final trigger that got the ball rolling, but the ball had been waiting to roll - long before that. Korach harbored a grudge against Moshe and Aharon because he believed he was their peer, but despite that, he had received no official acknowledgement or recognition.

If Korach was running for the presidency of the United States, then he was correct that he was suitable for the position. He had the stats. He was wealthy in his own right and therefore unbribable. He was extremely intelligent and a top strategist. He believed that he was a highly spiritual and moral individual. He possessed Ruach HaKodesh and mistakenly read the signs (polls) that he would survive a confrontation with Moshe and Aharon and that Shmuel would be his descendent.

So, what did Korach do? He launched a "democratic" election campaign - USA style. He engineered a smear campaign against his opponents. He spotlighted all the supposed "debacles" that his opponent had caused. He fabricated false accusations against his opponent and broadcast them in the media, accusations of corruption at the highest levels, accusations of sexual misconduct, accusations of monopolization, accusations of "lying", that Moshe was making everything up and not relating what HKB"H told him. Korach did not have shred of evidence to substantiate these false accusations. It was sufficient to have them "out there", to have them become buzzwords, to pump them incessantly. If you repeat a lie often enough, people will think it is true. The Soviets didn't invent this propaganda technique, Korach did.

And it all came to a climax in the final "debate", the showdown, for all to see.

We know Moshe and Aharon were the true leaders, chosen by HKB"H and not Korach, because it was finally proved by Divine intervention when Korach and his followers got swallowed up by the earth (we already knew it before, but this was the decisive proof, visible to all).

Let us examine the fundamental difference between Korach and Moshe. The main difference was that Korach pursued fame and fortune and Moshe ran from it. When HKB"H commanded Moshe to return to Egypt and redeem Am Yisrael, Moshe gave a thousand reasons why he was not qualified for the job. HKB"H had to forcibly "threaten" Moshe to get him to accept the role. While the rest of Am Yisrael were loading their 90 Libyan donkeys full of Egyptian loot, where was Moshe? Searching for Yosef's coffin. Moshe did not leave Egypt with 90 donkeys. When he says לֹא חֲמוֹר אֶחָד מֵהֶם נָשָׂאתִי, it is not only that he didn't dishonestly take one of Korach's donkeys, he didn't take a single donkey for himself either, donkeys that he was entitledto take, like the rest of Am Yisrael.

When electing a leader amongst the goyim, all the above is fair game. This is the way the goyim run their world. However, Am Yisrael are different.

Leaders in Am Yisrael are not democratically elected, they are chosen, by HKB"H. Not necessarily because of their qualifications, their seniority, their intelligence, their wealth, their physical strength, their popularity etc. but purely because of their middot. HKB"H chooses leaders who have the required middot in their resumé. Once they fit that bill, HKB"H, afterwards, gives them all the other stuff - strength, wealth, wisdom, etc.

Moshe was not smart initially. When he went up to Har Sinai to get the Torah, HKB"H kept repeating it over and over for forty days and forty nights and it just wouldn't sink in. Finally, HKB"H gave the Torah to Moshe as a gift, not because of his intelligence, but because of his מְסִירוּת נֶפֶשׁ, not eating nor drinking for 40 days and nights. When HKB"H selects someone to be a Kohen Gadol, he has to be "gadol" than his fellow Kohanim, in wealth, strength, appearance, etc. What if he is not wealthy? The other Kohanim give him money and make him wealthy. What if he is not strong? They send him to Gold's Gym to work out for 6 months and become strong so he can wave 22,000 Levi'im around in the air. Thirteen-year-old Betzalel did not have the artisanal skills to build the Mishkan, he had the required middot. Afterwards HKB"H gave him all the necessary skills as a gift. Skills are not prerequisites for leadership of Am Yisrael - middot are.

There are no candidates for Jewish leadership. If someone tenders themselves as a candidate of their own initiative, thinking they are worthy of the position, this is a sure-fire sign that they are not eligible for the role. Throughout history, HKB"H has chosen leaders in Am Yisrael, not by candidacy, but by the diametric opposite to candidacy, the person you would least likely expect to be chosen, the person who is reluctant to accept the role.

That was back then, 3335 years ago. Things were slightly different back then. We had HKB"H Himself to tell us who the leader was, we had the nevi'im to tell us who the leader was, when HKB"H was not communicating directly with Am Yisrael as He was in the generation of the Midbar.

Today, we don't have nevi'im to tell us. Today our leaders are chosen democratically, like the goyim. We copied them … and look where that has gotten us. We have deteriorated to the debased level of the goyim and forgotten that we are the Chosen People, meaning that the choosing is done by HKB"H, not us. We have adopted the modus operandi of the goyim, the audacity, the deceit, the falsehoods, the hate.

If anyone had the unfortunate opportunity to watch the debate last week between Biden and Trump (I didn't stay up to watch it, I saw a recording of it later in the day), this emphasizes the fundamental difference between Am Yisrael and the goyim. You come away thinking "This is the greatest superpower in the world and these are the best two candidates for leader of this nation?" The lies, the hate, the incompetence, the moral decrepitude. And it wasn't that one has dementia and the other doesn't (if he didn't, it would have been even worse). Both of them are morally demented.

It wouldn't bother me so much, except that here in Israel, we are using the USA as a role model and duplicating their debased values

It has become patently obvious that democracy as a system of government is now defunct. We have all borne witness to the flaws that afflict this system, how easily it can be perverted and manipulated and turned into an empty shell of an idea. If anyone needs proof of this, take a look at all the democracies in the world – they are all in a shambles. The "Axis of Evil", all the non/anti-democracies (Russia, China, Iran, etc.), have succeeded in exposing the democracy of the West for what it really is – a covert form of fascism.

The fact that Israel prides itself on being the only democracy in the Middle East, is not a point of honor, it is a point of shame, because the buzzword "democracy" is simply a façade for fascism. We are only "democratic", when it suits our purpose. When democracy does not suit our purpose - when demographics change, when values change, when those who have become accustomed to power are no longer "democratically" elected - then democracy is no longer the "holy cow" it was purported to be and those who are democratically elected by majority vote can "legitimately" be removed by military coup, by judicial coup, by character assassination, anarchy, etc. – it is all fair game, all the rules of "democracy" go out the window. Just like Korach. Just like the Soviets. Just like the USA. Just like Israel.

Just like you have two unsuitable candidates running for leadership of the world's superpower, you have two unsuitable candidates battling here in Israel for leadership. And I am not necessarily referring to individuals, I am referring to "camps" – democrat and conservative.

So, what to do?

Unlike the goyim, where democrats and conservatives are diametrically opposed poles of the magnet, in Am Yisrael they are not – they are complementary.

Imagine a "utopian" vision in the USA of a shared government where the Democrats would be in charge of the health system, the welfare system, the culture, the environment, while the Conservatives would be in charge of the military, the foreign policy, the economy, religion vs. state, crime prevention, immigration. Each side of the coin doing what they are best at, but both working together as one coin. It could never happen in the USA, but it could happen in Am Yisrael.

Am Yisrael are genetically designed not to follow the democratic model, but the Twelve Tribe model. A symbiotic organism with twelve parts working together for the benefit of the larger organism, each doing what they do best.

Imagine a leadership system in Am Yisrael where one arm focuses on Torah study, one arm focuses on defense, one arm focuses on hi-tech and the economy, one arm focuses on agriculture, one arm focuses on human rights, one arm focuses on culture, one arm focuses on foreign affairs, one arm focuses on the justice system, one arm focuses on education, one arm focuses on health, one arm focuses on the environment … but instead of working against one another, working symbiotically together with one another.

None of us knows which tribe we are from, except the Kohanim and Levi'im. However, genetics has a power of its own and each of us gravitates to our "tribe" naturally, instinctively. When someone ends up pursuing a career in the army, it is a nudge by their tribal genetics, similarly for someone who chooses a career in hi-tech/commerce, studies Torah full time, becomes a farmer, a lawyer/judge, etc. This is the de facto delineation of the Twelve Tribes today.

Right now, we have all these arms, but working against one another and people in some arms who do not belong there. Instead of being polarized like the goyim, Am Yisrael is designed for unity in diversity. Each focusing on what they are genetically and spiritually best at, for the benefit of all – Klal Yisrael.

Am Yisrael have experienced this intrinsic type of leadership in the sporadic "unity governments" over the decades - one just recently - when some exterior threat forces us to work together. However, they inevitably degenerate into the reality of the goyim – placing personal (factional) interests above national interests. This was the debacle of Korach.

It is an absence of אֵיזֶהוּ עָשִׁיר הַשָּׂמֵחַ בְּחֶלְקוֹ, a misguided lust to forcibly take something that is not yours, to forcibly exert your purpose over others' purposes, an inability to be satisfied with your predetermined role in Am Yisrael and recognize/respect others' roles. This is what Moshe said to Korach רַב לָכֶם בְּנֵי לֵוִי, the same attribute as Eisav וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו יֶשׁ לִי רָב

The process of Geulah is a stripping away of the façade, revealing the truth. Exposing all the man-made systems for what they are – fallible and transient. Eventually Am Yisrael will come to the realization and accept that there is only One true Leadership that is infallible. Then the twelve limbs will start realizing that they are part of the same body and start working together, relinquishing self in preference to the whole. It will happen, it is inevitable. Then the Geulah will arrive.

I would like to close by sharing with you some brief, fond memories of the צַדִּיק and גִּבּוֹר this shiur is dedicated to. Nadav Elchanan Knoller z"l, son of my best friend and next-door neighbor Eli Knoller, fell in action this week in Gaza. Being next-door neighbors, our kids grew up together and we watched Nadav grow into a remarkable adult. What struck me was that there were no "holy cows" with Nadav. He had an enquiring mind and examined every little thing to discover the truth of it by himself, not sufficing with second hand information. He always asked piercing questions that stripped away all the "shtuyot" and got directly to the core.

Nadav was incredibly industrious and full of initiatives. Having a bakery in the back of our house, my nose is highly attuned to smells that are irregular and unusual. One morning I was busy baking, when a strong smell of wood smoke wafted into the bakery and … it wasn't from anything that I was doing. I was worried that something connected to the bakery was burning chas vechalila. I rushed outside to find Nadav feeding logs into something that looked like a cross between a lunar lander and a nuclear reactor. The entire back yard was engulfed in smoke. When I asked him what he was doing he told me he had built a drum "smoker" to smoke his own food, smoked fish, meat etc. Whenever I heard the lawnmower going next door, or some construction project, erecting sheds, swimming pools, etc. I knew it was Nadav. He was a doer.

But the most striking thing about Nadav, is what the subject of this shiur was about. He was an אִישׁ מִדּוֹת par excellence, always looking to help, volunteer, always thinking of others before himself. A true leader.

He will be sorely missed. יְהִי זִכְרוֹ בָּרוּךְ.

Rabbi WInston – Parashas Korach

THE BRAIN IS a most wonderful and awesome creation, capable of more things than we know or use it for. It is one of my greatest fascinations in life, which some have told me in the past is because I was missing mine. They have even credited me with first using artificial intelligence. And those are my close friends.

But like a fine and expensive car, a brain is only “safe” when properly maintained. The brain has to be exercised like a muscle, and fed good information. Like any computer, a brain is only as good as the data it computes. Most of the brains on the planet are basically the same. All the diverse opinions, some deadly, are the result of the data being stored and processed differently.

But there is something about humans, not brains per se, that makes their level of thinking more spectacular, and why AI will always only be artificial intelligence and, not even that. Computers can only detect and work with “physical” knowledge, whereas humans seem to be able to access higher, more spiritual levels of it. This often impacts the final conclusion in ways that computers can never comprehend.

Take prophecy, for example. Prophecy is knowledge beyond what the person knows, and often beyond what the world knows. It might even be knowledge that we could never know without being told, which sums up most of the Zohar and the teachings of the Arizal. A chok—statute, like the Parah Adumah—Red Heifer, or Shatnez, not mixing wool and linen, is this type of knowledge as well.

We saw in Parashas BeHa’alosecha how G–D gave the seventy elders a tremendous amount of knowledge on the spot. Yosef was gifted the knowledge of the languages of the 70 nations the night before he met with Pharaoh for the first time. Very often what we call an insight is really G–D just answering a question our brain had. We are promised that in the Messianic Era, G–D will fill the world with Da’as, and just like that, everything will seem so very different even while remaining the same.

We were clued into this in the very first story in the Torah. It wasn’t just a tree, and it wasn’t just any fruit with which the first man and woman were tested. It was an Aitz HaDa’as Tov v’Ra, a tree of KNOWLEDGE of good and evil. From the beginning there has been da’as tov—good knowledge, and da’as ra—evil knowledge, good data and bad data.

But how can any knowledge be either? It can’t be. Rather, it is knowledge that can lead a person to do good by G–D, or knowledge that can lead a person to do the opposite. As we have seen throughout history and very much so today, the same information can have dramatically different effects on different people. Does something that tastes sweet to one person taste bitter to another?

It can. It is amazing how taste can vary from one person to another. This is largely due to a person’s chemical reaction to what they are eating, which is not the same from person to person. The same is true about people’s spiritual make-up, which affects the way they perceive reality and respond to it.

The Torah hints at the beginning of the parsha as to what was wrong with Korach. The Arizal explains what it means:

Korach, the son of Yitzhar, the son of Kehas, the son of Levi, took” (Bamidbar 16:1): It was also explained on the verse, “If Kayin will be avenged sevenfold” (Bereishis 4:24) how the evil of the Ruach of Kayin reincarnated into Korach…After that, the evil of the Ruach of Kayin combined within him (Korach) too as an ibur and he became lost to the world, since evil was added to his evil. This is the sod of, “And Korach…took”…He “took” the evil of the Ruach of Kayin from the evil side. This is what our rabbis, z”l, alluded to with their words that he took a “bad acquisition” for himself. (Sha’ar HaPesukim, Korach)

As to just how culpable Korach was for his behavior, given his propensity for wrong, is up to G–D. Some sources say that he will have an elevated status later on in history, while others are less favorable about his future outcome. But one important lesson derived from this week’s parsha is, how easy it is to delude oneself into believing that they are justified in going against Torah authority. The boldness to do so might be coming from a good place, but it also might be coming from a bad one, something that might only be clear over time.

But by then, the damage might be irreversible. It is wiser to check out the situation before it becomes a Korach-like fiasco, as has already happened many times already in Jewish history.

Reb Neuberger — WHY IS ISRAEL THE SAFEST PLACE?

Someone recently asked a Gadol why he says that Israel is the safest place in the world.

Please listen carefully to his answer: “Everything in Israel is in the nature of a nes; the entire life in Eretz Yisroel is miraculous, but the rest of the world operates according to the laws of nature. That being the case, we can say that Israel is the safest place in the world.”

From the standpoint of the world’s “logic,” Israel is the most dangerous place in the world. Eretz Yisroel is the size of New Jersey, a land in which the Jews are surrounded by hundreds of millions of savage enemies. On the west is the sea, which is open to the warships of every nation. We are vastly outnumbered and universally hated.

Yes, the entire world is against us, but the Master of the World is with us!

Since the dawn of our history, every empire has sought to destroy us. “Bechol dor vador … in every generation they have come against us to destroy us!” (Pesach Haggadah) It has been said that the greatest and most obvious miracle in the world is the continued existence of the Children of Israel. It is a“pele,” a marvel. All the most powerful nations in history have tried to destroy us, the tiniest nation. And what is the result? We are still here and they are gone – all of them -- swept into the dustbin of history.

I will repeat the famous words of Mark Twain – a non-Jew -- on this subject:

“If the statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race.  It suggests a nebulous dim puff of stardust lost in the blaze of the Milky Way.  Properly the Jew ought hardly to be heard of; but he is heard of, has always been heard of.  He is as prominent on the planet as any other people.  He has made a marvelous fight in this world, in all the ages; and he has done it with hands tied behind him… The Egyptian, the Babylonian and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dreamstuff and passed away; the Greek and the Roman followed, and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, or have vanished.  The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind.  All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains.  What is the secret of his immortality?” (Harper’s Magazine, 1897)

The secret of our immortality is clear, but it is beyond the grasp of other nations: our eternal bond with Hashem, which spans the entire life of this world and remains with us forever into the World to Come. Only we, who grasp the Torah close to us as we walk through the pathways of life, can understand this. In the eternal words of Dovid Hamelech, “[Hashem] relates His Word to Yaakov, His statutes and judgments to Israel. He did not do so for any other nation. They do not know [His] judgments!” (Tehillim 147)

They do not know His judgments and thus they are like straw that crumbles and vanishes in the wind. We, lehavdil, are a living fountain of Torah. “A righteous man will flourish like a date palm, like a cedar in Lebanon he will grow tall. Planted in the House of Hashem, in the courtyards of our G-d they will flourish….” (Tehillim 92)

This week we read the incomprehensible story of Korach! Yes, I know what the commentaries say: if we had been there, we might also have been swayed by Korach’s subtle and evil rhetoric. Yes, it takes iron determination to stick to the Words of Torah in this dark world of temptation. But, if we want to live -- if we want to survive – and not wind up in the dustbin of history, then we have no choice.

We have to fight our own Yetzer ha Ra to stick to Hashem and His Torah.

At the end of Shacharis, the Siddur presents words for us to say as we enter the frightening, hefker world around us: “N’chaini … Hashem guide me in Your righteousness because of my watchful enemies. Make Your way straight before me.” (Tehillim 5)

It is up to us to call upon G-d as we walk the dark streets of life. There are stories of how Gadolim walked to freedom through Nazi Germany, saying constantly to themselves, “Ain od milvado …. There is no one but Hashem.”As we walk the streets of life, it is up to us to call upon Hashem. We are surrounded by “watchful enemies” whose gunsights are trained upon us at every moment.

But Hashem destroys the enemies of His People. Am Yisroel will survive if we train ourselves to navigate constantly by the Light of the Torah. “Even though I walk in the valley of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me….” (Tehillim 23)

The miraglim never entered the Holy Land nor witnessed the Light of Redemption, but we can learn from their catastrophic mistake. May we greet Moshiach ben Dovid and see the rebuilt Bais Hamikdosh soon in our days!

Envy, Interests, and Disputes – What Can We Learn from the Story of Korach?

This week’s Torah portion, Parashat Korach, highlights two negative traits that exist within a person: envy and disputing others. These traits do not control us; rather, we control them, or at least we are called upon to control them. Therefore, it is important to observe and study them. A story like Korach and his followers’ rebellion against Moses and Aaron is an educational story that gives us the correct perspective on these traits.

Let’s start with envy. What was the reason that Korach initiated a rebellion against Moses and Aaron? On the surface, Korach sought equality. He delivered a very convincing speech: “You have gone too far! For all the community are holy, all of them, and the Lord is in their midst. Why then do you raise yourselves above the Lord’s congregation?” But Moses was not impressed by Korach’s smooth words and pointed out that Korach was not seeking equality but rather aimed to oust Moses and Aaron from the leadership of the people and take their place. What then was Korach’s motive? Why did he rebel against Moses and Aaron?

Rashi quotes the Midrash on this matter: Now what made Korah decide to quarrel with Moses? He envied the chieftainship of Elizaphan the son of Uzziel whom Moses appointed as chieftain over the sons of Kohath by the [Divine] word. Korah claimed, “My father and his brothers were four [in number]” as it says, “The sons of Kohath were…” (Exod. 6:18). Amram was the first, and his two sons received greatness-one a king and one a kohen gadol. Who is entitled to receive the second [position]? Is it not I, who am the son of Izhar, who is the second brother to Amram? And yet, he [Moses] appointed to the chieftainship the son of his youngest brother! I hereby oppose him and will invalidate his word.

Envy drove Korach to initiate a rebellion against Moses, who was G-d’s messenger. In Pirkei Avot, we read that envy is one of the three desires that can disrupt a person’s mind: “Envy, lust, and honor drive a person out of the world.” Anyone who knows a little about human nature knows how accurate this saying is. People make the mistakes of their lives, causing significant harm to themselves and their families, because of envy, lust, or the pursuit of honor.

Korach made this mistake, and here we come to the second trait: instigating disputes. As a result of envy and the desire for power, Korach created a dispute that became the symbol of a “dispute not for the sake of Heaven,” a dispute of narrow interests.

The problem with disputes is not that different people hold different opinions and approaches. That is natural and even beneficial. The problem with disputes is what I do when my desire does not align with the desire of others. Is it an opportunity for me to try and compromise, to reach agreements; or do I embark on a campaign of slander, lies, persecution, and quarrels to achieve my goal – fulfilling my personal desire.

Korach, unfortunately, chose the latter path. He slandered Moses and Aaron, accusing them of exploiting and oppressing the people; he mocked them and posed provocative questions to them in the presence of many people. Moreover, he gathered all kinds of opposition groups into one faction, which included those who wanted to return to Egypt and worship idols, alongside those who aspired to be priests in the Temple and were angry at the appointment of the tribe of Levi to the Temple service. Korach, who was not interested in returning to Egypt nor in the Temple service, but in power and a prestigious position, led this eclectic group.

These stories were written in the Torah so generations could learn about the power of these traits and recognize them within us, acknowledging their negativity. A person who aspires to live a worthy life is called upon to identify when to overcome envy and flee from disputes. Before envy becomes an obsession and drives a person out of his mind, one is called to overcome it, believing that no one can affect what he truly deserves. When a dispute turns into a campaign of slander and mockery, that is the moment when it is identified as a “dispute not for the sake of Heaven,” from which we are called to flee.

Rabbi Wein – KORACH

Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman (Ramban) is of the general opinion that events, as recorded in the Torah, occurred in a linear timeline. This is in spite of the maxim that there is no late or early in the Torah. He limits that rule to certain halachic instances as they appear in the Talmud. Thus the story of Korach and his contest against Moshe that forms the central part of this week’s parsha occurred after the tragedy of the spies and their negative report about the Land of Israel.

As I have commented before, the negative report of the spies was motivated, according to rabbinic opinion, by personal interests having no objective value as to the issue of the Land of Israel itself. So too, this uprising against Moshe led by Korach is also not an issue of justice or objective benefit to the people, but rather it is motivated purely by the personal issues and jealousies of Korach and his followers.

Both Korach and the spies masked their own personal drives for power and position with high-sounding principles of public good, social justice and great concern for the future of the people of Israel. The very shrillness of their concern for the good of society itself calls attention to their true motives – they protested too much!

Pious disclaimers of any self-interest seem to always accompany those that clamor for social betterment and a more just society. But it is often personal ambition and the drive to acquire power over others that is the true face of these movements and individuals. All of the dictators of the past and present centuries promised great improvements for their peoples and countries and yet all, without exception, eventually only pursued their own personal gain and power. Always beware of those who speak in the name of the people. Most of the time they are only imitations of Korach.

This is perhaps an insight as to why Moshe took such a strong stand against Korach and demanded an exemplary punishment from Heaven. It is extremely difficult for humans to judge the true motives of others in their declarations and policies. Only Heaven, so to speak, can do so. Moshe’s plea to Heaven is directed not only against the current Korach that he faces, but it is also against the constant recurrences of other Korachs throughout Jewish and world history.

Only a shocking miracle of the earth swallowing Korach and his followers and of a fire consuming those who dared to offer incense in place of Aharon, would impress the historical psyche of Israel, as to be wary of Korach’s imitators through the ages.

There is an adage in Jewish life that one should always respect others but also be wary of their true motives. Only regarding Moshe does the Torah testify that as the true servant of God, he is above criticism and suspicion. But ordinary mortals have ordinary failings and self-interest is one of those failings. Moshe is true and his Torah is true. After that, no matter how fetching the slogan or how glorious the promise, caution and wariness about the person and cause being advocated are the proper attitudes to embrace.

Solid Gold Replica
Of all places, in New York

The “Unveiling the Ark — Building the coalition of light” event of the Israel Heritage Foundation (IHF) at the Pierre Hotel in New York City last Wednesday, brought together dozens of top Christian, Jewish, and conservative leaders who spoke about the importance of restoring faith and spirituality back into the lives of Americans and Israelis. During the gathering, businessman and philanthropist Lewis Topper, who co-hosted the dinner, unveiled a pure gold exact replica of the biblical Ark of the Covenant he had commissioned.

I was only interested in "what, where, when" about the photo. Full Coverage of the Meeting of Faith Leaders can be read at https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/392509

Rav Kook – Parashat Korach

 Korach: Separating and Connecting

The entire congregation is holy, and G–D is with them. Why do you raise yourselves over G–D’s community?” (Num. 16:3)

This was the battle cry of Korach’s rebellion — a complaint that, at first glance, seems perfectly justified. Did not the entire people hear G–D speak at Sinai? It would seem that Korach was only paraphrasing what G–D Himself told Moses: “Speak to the entire community of Israel and tell them: you shall be holy, for I, your G–D, am holy” (Lev. 19:2).

Why indeed should only the Levites and the kohanim serve in the Temple? Why not open up the service of G–D to the entire nation?

Havdalah and Chibur

In our individual lives, and in society and the nation as a whole, we find two general principles at work. This first is havdalah, meaning ‘withdrawal’ or ’separation.’ The second is chibur, meaning ‘connection’ or ‘belonging.’

These are contradictory traits, yet we need both. This is most evident on the individual level. In order to reflect on our thoughts and feelings, we need privacy. To develop and clarify ideas, we need solitude. To attain our spiritual aspirations, we need to withdraw within our inner selves.

Only by separating from society can we achieve these goals. The distracting company of others robs us of seclusion’s lofty gifts. It restricts and diminishes the creative flow from our inner wellspring of purity and joy.

This same principle applies to the nation as a whole. In order for the Jewish people to actualize their spiritual potential, they require havdalah from the other nations — as “a nation that dwells alone” (Num. 23:9).

Similarly, within the Jewish people it is necessary to separate the tribe of Levi — and within Levi, the kohanim — from the rest of the nation. These groups have special obligations and responsibilities, a reflection of their inner character and purpose.

Separation in Order to Connect

Yet separation is not a goal in and of itself. Within the depths of havdalah lies the hidden objective of chibur: being part of the whole and influencing it. The isolated forces will provide a positive impact on the whole, enabling a qualitative advance in holiness. These forces specialize in developing talents and ideas that, as they spread, become a source of blessing for all. As they establish their unique traits and paths, life itself progresses and acquires purpose.

We find this theme of havdalah/chibur on many levels. The human race is separate from all other species of life. Through this havdalah, humanity is able to elevate itself and attain a comprehensive quality that encompasses the elevation of the entire world. The Jewish people are separate from the other nations; this separateness enables them to act as a catalyst to elevate all of humanity, to function as a “kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Ex. 19:6).

The tribe of Levi is separated from the rest of the nation through their special responsibilities; this distinction ennobles the members of the tribe to fulfill their unique role. The Levites sanctify themselves and become a blessing for the entire nation. And the kohanim, with their special holiness, are elevated until they draw forth ruach hakodesh (prophetic inspiration) for the benefit of the entire nation, thus actualizing the nation’s highest spiritual abilities.

The Correct Order

Now we may understand the source of Korach’s error. The Zohar (Mishpatim 95a) teaches:

“The Sitra Achra [literally, the ‘Other Side’ — the forces of evil] begins with chibur [connection] and ends with pirud [division]. But the Sitra deKedushah (‘Side of Holiness’) begins with pirud and ends with chibur.”

The correct path, the path of holiness, follows the order of first separating and then connecting. In other words, the separation is for the sake of connection. But Korach’s philosophy (and similar ideologies, such as communism) took the opposite approach. He sought a simplistic inclusiveness of all, binding all people into one uniform group from the outset. He boastfully claimed to unite all together — “The entire congregation is holy.” This approach, however, replaces the splendor of diversity with dull uniformity. In the end, this totalitarian approach leads to disunity, as all parts yearn to break apart in order to express their unique individuality. “The Sitra Achra begins with chibur and ends with pirud.

Rabbi Weissman – The Gemara On Trusting Expert Doctors

With the recent upsurge in medical propaganda once again, today's Torah class is especially important. What do Chazal actually say about trusting doctors, even “experts”?

Obviously there is far more to learn than can be covered in a single short class, but the fundamentals are clear and easily applicable to the situation in which we find ourselves. The Torah we learned today is a timeless, divine immunization against the medical murder system.

Funny how the Erev Rav shills missed the wide open sources we studied today...but you shouldn't.

We also learned insights from the Midrash about arguing with “cleverly wicked” people, as well as collective punishment in times of war.

The class is available at https://rumble.com/v55aatw-r-and-b-torah-fellowship-114-the-gemara-on-trusting-expert-doctors.html.

Please learn and share.

With the possible exception of the defunct Soviet Union, the Erev Rav / Amalek State of Israel has committed more atrocities against the Jewish people since the Holocaust than any other state.

I challenge even the most ardent flag-waving Dati Leumi cultists to dispute this.

This is not an endorsement of surrendering our land and remaining in exile.

It's an endorsement of breaking out of Stockholm Syndrome.

FEAR OF DOCTORS AND NEEDLES EXPLAINED

A five-week-old infant from the Jerusalem area whose mother refused to get vaccinated for whooping cough during pregnancy died of the disease about a week ago. Two days later, a seven-year-old girl from Netanya, whose parents refused to vaccinate her against tetanus, was hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit at Laniado Hospital after contracting the serious and excruciatingly painful disease.

Ynet reported that the lowest vaccination rates against whooping cough are found almost exclusively in Jerusalem and in religious and Chareidi communities outside the capital.

The report quoted Dr. Maurit Beeri, a pediatrician and the director of ALYN Rehabilitation Hospital for Children and Youth, who slammed parents who neglect their children by refusing to vaccinate them.

“Unfortunately, these incidents can no longer be considered rare,’ she said. “In recent years, we’ve seen a trend where people re-evaluate expert recommendations and make decisions without informed knowledge. When it comes to preventing infectious diseases, we see a decline in vaccination rates, especially within certain population groups.”

“We must remember that these things spread and endanger us all,” Dr. Beeri warned. “If we used to call it ‘Dr. Google,’ today it’s ‘Professor TikTok.’ Everyone has their agenda and platform with wide reach. Since COVID, instead of expressing gratitude for vaccines that saved us from lockdowns, people have become more emboldened to refuse vaccinations for other diseases as well.”

Yes, the medical profession has clearly scared everyone
into not taking vaccines after the ‘death shot’
that did kill and maim many throughout the entire world.
After lying and creating unnecessary restrictions on all of us
you want us to trust you??
Doctors? Do you understand the fear?

People don’t differentiate between new and old vaccines. When we talk about routine vaccinations for infants, these are vaccines with data from millions of children. We’re talking about diseases that have almost disappeared from the world. I’ve been a doctor for 30 years and have never seen a case of tetanus. It’s a terrible disease, causing excruciating pain. Children in developing countries still die from it, and it’s entirely unnecessary. I grew up in a place where there was hysteria over tetanus from every rusty nail, but today we’re in a different place.”

“Tetanus is a dreadful disease, causing indescribable suffering, and it’s entirely unnecessary. Have you ever woken up at night with a muscle cramp in your leg? Have you ever pulled a muscle during physical activity? Now imagine your entire body, all at once, cramping up. Everything contorts in different directions. You can’t move. Every finger stiffens to the point of breaking bones. You can’t even scream because your jaw is locked and your tongue is stuck to the roof of your mouth. Breathing is difficult. This is how children died before the tetanus vaccine was invented, with terrified eyes and no ability to call for help. This is a description I read in books. I never saw it because the children who played outside and fell and got injured were vaccinated.”

“Experts” that told Israelis that that ‘needle/syringe carrying that toxic potion being injected into your bodies’ was saving lives! Who trusts the “experts” anymore; after they lied?! There’s so much more to be said.

“We see every day that expert opinions no longer mean anything. Everyone’s opinion is considered equally valid, and there is no regard for someone with acquired knowledge compared to anyone else who raises any claim. Conspiracy theories don’t affect only healthcare; they affect everything related to the society around us.”

“I grew up in a world where children weren’t strapped into car seats, and most of us survived. But I work in child rehabilitation, and I see the children who weren’t strapped in car seats. I also see the children who come in with various diseases that can’t be prevented. I tell everyone: prevent what you can. You don’t understand what happens to a family with an injured child or, chalilah, a child who has died. It’s hardship, it’s suffering, it’s terrible. You don’t want to go there. Don’t take such risks; it’s not worth it. It’s unnecessary.”

“I’m really angry. What is wrong with you – parents who surely love your children – when you neglect them and allow them to contract diseases that have already been eradicated? When you feel like protectors of your offspring by refusing to vaccinate them because you think you know better than everyone else? When you fear very rare complications and leave them exposed to much more dangerous diseases?”

Its your fault, Doctors, your Covid vaccine did more damage than coming down with the Flu. Doctors, you have created the atmosphere that one cannot trust you or your so-called Health Ministry (that turned into a ‘death’ ministry with your edicts and control farse)

and that also goes for the so-called Jewish media in Israel; they compounded the ruse with their  regurgitation of distorted propaganda and lies = accomplices!
