Rabbi Ohad Tirosh, the Rosh Yeshiva of the Eli Yeshiva for IDF veterans, slammed IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir’s assertion last week that the military consistently operates in accordance with the Joint Service Ordinance.

The Joint Service Ordinance is an IDF directive governing the integration of male and female soldiers while providing accommodations for observant soldiers, including exemptions from activities that conflict with their religious beliefs, such as certain mixed-gender events or performances by female singers.

Speaking during a Parshas HaShavua shiur, Rabbi Tirosh said. “The camp must remain pure, yet female combat soldiers are being integrated. I don’t believe a single word IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said regarding the Joint Service Ordinance.”

“I’ve been involved in this issue for 20 years,” he continued. “The  IDF drafted the Joint Service Ordinance and then systematically and deliberately did everything possible not to implement it, including generals who signed off on it.”

“IDF Spokesperson, who are you trying to fool? We know from the inside—what happens in the units and throughout the army. You don’t understand that taharah is the foundation of all combat, the foundation of everything. What do soldiers do before entering Lebanon and Gaza? They accept the yoke of Malchus Shamayim. That’s what the Chief of Staff doesn’t understand—that tahara is what gives the army its strength. All this mixing isn’t a tactical issue.”

Nonetheless, Rabbi Tirosh mocked the idea that female soldiers can perform the same tactical tasks as men, saying: “Can a female soldier replace a tank track? Can she carry 70 percent of her body weight and climb a steep mountain? Who are you trying to fool?”

The Forum of Soldiers’ Wives for the Kedushas HaMachaneh responded to Rabbi Tirosh’s remarks, saying: “More and more Rabbanim and educators, like the broader public, no longer believe the promises and empty talking points of senior IDF officials. The reality on the ground is one of extensive mixing of men and women that harms combat soldiers day after day, hour after hour, undermining operational readiness, the kedushas hamachaneh, and the resilience of the IDF. It is the responsibility of the defense minister and the prime minister to remove the agenda of the Yohalom (IDF’s Gender Affairs Directorate) and gender-blurring policies from the military and strengthen the kedushas hamachaneh.”
