These are religious Jews that destroyed a paper and plaster idol. They should be considered with honor. We were commanded to DESTROY idols in Eretz Yisrael when Yehoshua brought the Israelites into and onto our Land. Southern Lebanon is Land of Eretz Yisrael!
So what this brave and honorable soldier of Hashem did was according to the commandment of Hashem, God Almighty of the entire World!
The “misguided” among Am Yisrael are punishing him and others instead of supporting the Word of Hashem, God. They are terribly misguided and will be dealt with appropriately.
King Omari was a very big Rasha, but successful because he consecrated and extended his rule over more of Eretz Yisrael.

It is said of king Achav, northern kingdom that he was such a great rasha and idol worshiper that our great Sages (Chazal) were debating whether he would have a portion in the World to Come. They said 'because he expanded the Land of Israel', he might have Olam Habah. Expanding the Land is a great mitzvah.
