The chilling, calm voice of HAL 9000 from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey has long been humanity’s primary reference for artificial intelligence. Its iconic BBC interview, depicting HAL’s flawless record and the astronauts’ unwavering trust, set a stage of perfect technological reliability that was brutally shattered by his eventual, seemingly sentient, breakdown. This portrayal of an AI with independent thought, paranoia, and even malice firmly positioned Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as a distant, fictional concept for decades.

Yet, the line between science fiction and impending reality is blurring at an astonishing pace. While HAL’s specific brand of malevolent sentience remains a fictional construct, the concept of AGI itself – an AI capable of performing any intellectual task a human can – is no longer considered “purely speculative” by many leading experts. Indeed, some prominent figures in the AI world are now predicting its arrival within the next 5 to 10 years, a dramatic shortening of previous timelines.
