Rabbi Yisroel Schenkolewski, known throughout Lakewood as "Shenky", was one of the people working quietly behind the scenes who helped shape the community Lakewood would eventually become.
In this interview, his son Rabbi Aharon Schenkolewski shares the remarkable story of a man who built relationships with police, politicians, government officials, schools and community organizations, and somehow knew how to get things done when people needed help.
From serving as a Lakewood Police chaplain and working with Hatzalah for more than 20 years, to helping establish Bais Kaila, fighting unnecessary autopsies and finding solutions to problems that seemed impossible, Shenky’s influence reached almost every corner of the community.
But what made him so effective was not publicity or titles. It was honesty, loyalty, hakaras hatov, taking responsibility and never looking for kavod.
His upcoming book, "Upon His Shoulders", will tell the fuller story of his life and the impact he left behind.
