Rosh Chodesh Elul in the Year 2448

On the early morning of the 1st of Elul of the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE) Moses ascended Mount Sinai, taking with him the stone tablets he had hewn by divine command for G-d to re-inscribe the Ten Commandments.

On the mountain, G-d allowed Moses to "see My back, but not My face" (which Maimonides interprets as a perception of G-d's reality but not His essence) -- the closest any human being ever came to knowing G-d -- and taught him the secret of His "Thirteen Attributes of Mercy" (Exodus 33:18-34:8).

Moses remained on the mountain for 40 days, until the 10th of Tishrei (Yom Kippur), during which time He obtained G-d's whole-hearted forgiveness and reconciliation with the people of Israel following their betrayal of the covenant between them with their worship of the Golden Calf.

This was the third of Moses' three 40-day periods on Mount Sinai in connection with the Giving of the Torah. Ever since, the month of Elul serves as the "month of Divine mercy and forgiveness."

Experiencing Love at First Sight

Recognizing one's soul mate depends on sensing the shared soul-root. This is the most fundamental type of insight there is.

Normally, love is born in the heart only after the initial, seminal flash of insight has, through deliberate meditation, ripened in the womb of the mind into a fully-developed idea and been assimilated into one's world view. Just as physical pregnancy requires time, so does this process, for the mentality that prevailed prior to the introduction of the new insight must come to grips with it. Since the mind and its thought-patterns are not fully refined and rectified, the introduction of a new element of truth requires that the previous mental structure be entirely re-evaluated and reconstructed in its light, and this takes time.

Finding One's Soul Mate

Although finding one's soul mate and relating to her as such is no simple matter, there are propitious times for identifying her (i.e., "remembering" her in their common soul-root).

The first of these is Rosh HaShanah, the first day of the Jewish year. Adam and Eve were created on Rosh HaShanah; our sages teach us that they were created as 20-year-olds (Bereishit Rabbah 14:7). On the day they were created, G-d brought them to the garden of Eden, which He had prepared as an extended wedding canopy. Rosh HaShanah is thus both man's birthday and his wedding anniversary.

We refer to Rosh HaShanah in our prayers as Yom HaZikaron , which is commonly translated "the Day of Remembrance," but which more literally means "the Day of Memory." Rosh HaShanah is the day of judgment. G-d not only remembers us by judging us as we are in this world but also remembers us as we were before our souls descended into our bodies, when they were "an actual part of G-d above." This arouses His mercy over us, since our souls have descended from such a height to such depths.

Inasmuch as the world is continuously being created and sustained from G-d's consciousness, on Rosh HaShanah a Jew is also able to remember (i.e., sense) his origin in G-d's infinite light. This origin is the common soul-root he shares with his spouse.

This implies, as well, that the most important criterion for choosing one's soul mate (i.e., that which most identifies, albeit indirectly, the possession of a common soul-root), is: do we strive in the same way to realize the same ideals? The prospective partners should simply look for a general sense of mutual affinity and attraction, together with shared ideals and goals in life. When they discuss the common future they envision building, or their common ideals and objectives in life, each should become excited about what the other says.

"Oneness" in their past, present, and future is thus what defines a truly predestined (bashert) couple. They share a common soul-root (their past), common goals (their future), and always (in the present) remember their common origin as they proceed toward their common goal.

Where is the Woman of my Dreams?

I am in my late thirties and still single. I have met dozens of women, but none are right for me. I know what you are going to say: I am too fussy. But I can't just settle on something half good. Where is the woman of my dreams?

A:

It doesn't make sense. You are a wonderful person with so much to offer. Why are you still alone? ... There could be many reasons why someone may find it hard to find a partner. But I think in your case, the answer is simple. You're married already. You are not available, because you are involved in a longstanding intimate relationship with an imaginary Ms. Perfect. Spotless Days

A spotless day is a day without sunspots, a day when the face of the sun is utterly blank. Spotless days never occur during Solar Max when the sun is active, but they are common during solar minimum, the opposite phase of the 11-year sunspot cycle when the sun is very quiet. By counting spotless days, we can keep track of the depth and longevity of a solar minimum.

Absence of sun spots = cooler earth

By the standard of spotless days, the ongoing solar minimum is the deepest in a century: NASA report. In 2008, no sunspots were observed on 266 of the year's 366 days (73%). To find a year with more blank suns, you have to go all the way back to 1913, which had 311 spotless days (85%):



"Current Stretch" is the number of consecutive days the sun has been blank. The 100-year record is 92 consecutive spotless days in April, May and June of 1913.

"2009 Total" is the total number of days and the percentage of days in 2009 that the sun has been blank. The 100-year record for a full year is 311 spotless days (85%) in 1913.

Looking back at the last ten solar minima (not including the ongoing minimum), we can count the total number of spotless days in each and calculate an average: 485 spotless days. The average exceeds the number of days in a year because solar minima last much longer than one year. The fact that the ongoing solar minimum has already racked up 590+ spotless days with no end in sight tells us that it is much deeper and longer than average.

That's the surprising conclusion of a NASA-funded study by the National Academy of Sciences entitled Severe Space Weather Events—Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts. In the 132-page report, experts detailed what might happen to our modern, high-tech society in the event of a "super solar flare" followed by an extreme geomagnetic storm. They found that almost nothing is immune from space weather—not even the water in your bathroom.

The most famous geomagnetic power outage happened during a space storm in March 1989 when six million people in Quebec lost power for 9 hours.

Decorum by All Means?

Rafi of Life in Israel posted about an interesting exchange concerning the decorum at the Kotel and other Holy Places in Israel.

On one side, are those who think that the religious are imposing stricter rules on these Holy Places, while the religious (Chareidim) think that just the opposite in happening.

"The pashkevilim decried Rabbi Rabinovitch's attempt to "secularize" the holy sites around Israel, specifically Meron. He is forming some sort of council to decide on renovations ... as a tourist attraction. The pashkevil complains that he is secularizing ... instead of guarding it as a holy site [and] is trying to bring non-religious people to be "tourists" there."

To me, this is the "push and pull" of elevating the Kedusha of Eretz Yisrael

Hashem is the One to pass judgment on Am Yisrael, and that happpens on Rosh HaShanah. We are now entering the month of Elul, the month of Divine mercy and forgiveness, a time of increased Ahavas Yisrael (love for your fellow Jew).

Decorum is important adequate spacing, and necessary facilities are important at all the religious sites, but to say that "you" are not allowed, while "You" are allowed to visit, in my estimation, is not the Jewish way. These Holy places where our ancestors are resting, are the ancestors of ALL AM YISRAEL.

How can one be brought closer to emulating their ancestors? A first step to teshuva (which means 'returning to Hashem') is actually visiting their resting places, taking in the aura of the experience, learning more about who they were and how the lived. How can one do teshuva if they are pushed away, demeaned, and attacked? How does one create an atmosphere conducive to 'welcoming' the non-religious into the world of Mitzvos and Shabbos? By example of behavior. Not by always fighting them.

The zealots should be fighting the missionaries who are stealing our children and innocent (unknowing) Israelis. The missionaries are successful BECAUSE THEY ARE WELCOMING AND KIND AND GIVING! That is where the fight should be.

Decorum is a necessity for all expressions of religious belief and articulation of all manner of speech and action, no matter what end of the spectrum you are holding at.

Decorum = dignified propriety of behavior, speech, and dress.

The Alter Rebbe offers a parable illustrating G-d's closeness to every Jew during the month of Elul: A wise and powerful king returns to his capital city, but does not enter the gates. He waits for his subject to empty out of the capital and greet him in the field. There, in the field, each person can encounter the king. And he receives them all with a smiling countenance. Elul - Month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness

As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionally a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

As the month of "Divine Mercy and Forgiveness," Elul is a most opportune time for teshuvah ("return" to G-d), prayer, charity, and increased Ahavat Yisrael (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all."

The following are some of the basic customs and practices for the month of Elul:

• Each day of the month of Elul (except for Shabbat and the last day of Elul), we sound the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance.

• When writing a letter or meeting one another, we bless one another by including the greeting Ketivah vachatimah tovah--which roughly translates as "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year."

• Chapter 27 of the Book of Psalms is added to daily prayers, in the morning and afternoon.

• The Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms).

• Elul is a good time to have one's tefillin and mezuzotchecked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use.

• During the last week of Elul, in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, the Slichot prayers are recited, the first night at midnight, the following days in the early morning.

Wife of Deputy Foreign Minister a Missionary?

Disturbing reports have emerged that the wife of Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon is a missionary who uses her status to spread the word of J among Jewish dignitaries around the world. In an interview with a missionary broadcasting network, obtained by Yad L’Achim, Ayalon hails a “good news” the fact that “eighty percent of J’s ministry is up in the Galilee.”

An excerpt from the Charles Carrin Ministries describes a banquet in Washington attended by Anne Ayalon when her husband was Israel’s ambassador to the United States:

“I was … astounded that Anne Ayalon used the banquet occasion to share her testimony about J. She is a born-again believer. Speaking before high-ranking Jewish delegates, Washington’s media-reporters, and other international figures, she told of her love for J … I sat there astonished.

Yad L’Achim revealed this past week that Ayalon also appears in a missionary film on the topic “Our Single Purpose - Saving Souls Through Our Beliefs.”

Yad L’Achim Chairman Rabbi Sholom Dov Lipshitz sent an urgent letter to the prime minister, foreign minister and state comptroller informing them of the seriousness of the matter. He stressed that “the very fact that the wife of a person who occupies such a senior position is a missionary who isn’t ashamed of her actions is likely to bring the missionaries additional motivation and legitimacy, and the results could be disastrous, r”l.”

Rav Lipshitz added that “only an amendment to the missionary law that puts the brakes on missionary activities in Israel will correct the matter. It is crucial that the religious parties throw their weight behind such legislation.”

Cabinet Ministers Yishai, Yaalon: Outposts Not Illegal - New Report is Needed

Four ministers who were hosted by leaders of the Jewish settlement enterprise in the Shomron (Samaria) are Moshe Yaalon and Yuli Edelstein of the Likud, Eli Yishai of Shas, and Daniel Herskovitz of the Jewish Home. They were hosted by Shomron Regional Council head Gershon Mesika, and Amanah settlement organization head Zev Chever (Zambish) and veteran Yesha Council leader Pinchas Wallerstein were on hand as well.

Several of the outposts that were termed “unauthorized” in a report by Meretz Knesset candidate Talia Sasson, was prepared seven years ago at the request of then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Huckabee: Would Israel Tell Obama Who Can Live in the Bronx?

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday that the United States should not be telling Jewish people where they can and cannot live in Jerusalem, and he compared such a policy with racial segregation.

“My question is how would the government of the United States feel if Prime Minister Netanyahu began to dictate which people could live in the Bronx, which ones could live in Manhattan, and which could live in Queens," he said.

Huckabee spoke with reporters as he toured the remains of the ancient Jewish City of David (Ir David) in eastern Jerusalem Monday, touring the Pool of Shiloach (Silwan) and Hezekiah’s Tunnel,

The governor said, “I think that there is some concern that many of us have who have been coming to Israel for many years. I’m not Jewish, so I am not trying to stand up for the Jewish people but for the freedom of the Israeli people who I feel have an organic relationship to the United States as the only democracy in the Middle East, as the only place where freedom and liberty and personal capacity to make choices really thrives. It’s in the vital interest of not just the Middle East but the world that freedom exists.”

“I’d like to think that the rights of Jewish people in their own homeland would be the same as the rights of American people in their homeland,” Huckabee said. “We take our rights very seriously.”

The J Street political action committee, which bills itself as pro-Israel and pro-peace, has received tens of thousands of dollars in donations from dozens of Arab and Muslim Americans, as well as from individuals connected to Palestinian and Iranian-advocacy groups, according to U.S. Federal Election Commission filings.

In addition, the Jerusalem Post reported, at least two State Department officials connected to Middle East issues have donated to J Street, which pushes for the two-state solution and for more U.S. involvement in resolving the Middle East conflict.

J Street Incites Against Israel

Prominent pro-Israel activist Harvey Schwartz, the chairman of AIAC, spoke to INN TV and warned that the ostensibly pro-Israel group J Street is actually “very, very radical” and has incited against the Jewish state in the halls of Congress. Senior members of J Street have often distributed factually incorrect material that makes Israel look bad, he explained.

Schwartz said that he and other pro-Israel activists were not surprised to discover that much of J Street's funding comes from openly anti-Israel sources. He slammed J Street leaders, accusing them of working against their own people and suggesting a parallel to Jews who served as kapos during the Holocaust.

The Tchebiner Rov would marvel at the Brisker Rov's depth in learning and the Brisker Rov would marvel at the Tchebiner Rov's breadth of Torah knowledge. Both of them were in awe of the Satmar Rov's breadth and depth of Torah wisdom. So the story goes. Not only was the Satmar Rov the architect of Chassidishe life in Post War America but he was one of the generations greatest torah scholars and poskim. He was truly a living legend.

Rav Yoel Teitelbaum was born 18 Teves 5647/1887 to his father Rav Chanina Yom Tov the Rebbe in the Hungarian town of Sighet. He was a direct descendant of the Yismach Moshe and the Yeitev Lev. After being childless for many years, the Kedushas Yom Tov had two sons Rav Chaim Tzvi, the Atzei Chaim of Sighet and Rav Yoel. Rav Yoel or Yoilish as he was called was a wonder child. His Bar Mitzva Drasha kept the crowd spellbound and was the big news the next day in the newspapers. In a practice that lasted through his life, Rav Yoel often did not sleep in a bed, instead learning through the night by forcing himself awake by placing his feet in bucket of freezing cold water.

Rav Yoel got married at the age of 17 to Chava Horowitz the daughter of the Plancher Rebbe. His gravely ill father was Misader Kedushin and was niftar two weeks later. After the petira of the Kedushas Yom Tov, Rav Yoel's older brother, the Atzei Chaim became Rebbe and Rov of Sighet. Rav Yoel quietly moved to the neighboring town of Satmar where he hoped to grow in Torah away from the limelight and his father's chassidim. Things didn't work out that way and within a year due to pressure from his many admirers, Rav Yoel was leading his own Kehila and Chassidim.

Rav Yoel's first official position was as Rov of Orishiva, Czechoslovakia, which he accepted in 1911 at the age of 24. It was there that he gained a reputation as a fearless kana'i padlocking a wedding hall and not letting the seudah proceed after they violated his warning against mixed dancing. It was during his years in Orishiva after opening a yeshiva that Rav Yoel's halachic psak became sought after with Shailos pouring in from all over Hungary. In 1924, after Rav Yoel felt he had brought Orishiva to the level of yiddishkeit it needed to be, he accepted a similar position in Kroli. The ten years he spent in Kroli was in his opinion some of the best years of his life, learning and teaching torah. Due to pressure upon the vacancy of the position of the Rov of Satmar, in 1934 he acceded and moved back to his adopted town of many years before. By this time he was already recognized by the likes of Rav Boruch Ber Leibowitz as the leader of Hungarian Jewry and one of the Gedolei HaDor.

From the outbreak of World War II until the Nazi beasts invaded Hungary, the Rebbe did not sit still. He was actively involved in the rescue efforts of his Polish brethren. When the Nazis invaded Rav Yoel was fortunate to be awarded a seat on the famous Kastner train after Rudolf Kastner's mother appeared to him in a dream and told him that if the Satmar Rov is not on the train all its passengers would not survive. The Kastner train was a trainload of people who were to be taken out of Nazi occupied territory to freedom in Switzerland as part of a deal between the Zionist leader in Hungary, Rudolf Kastner and the Nazi hierarchy. ALthough originally intended for important Hungarian Zionist members and their families, many members of the Chareidi community also were able to get on. The train did not go initially to Switzerland as promised, but after a detour and a four months layover in the infamous Bergen Belsen death camp (albeit in a special section) they were finally sent on their way.

After the war Rav Yoel moved to Eretz Yisroel. However shortly thereafter through Hashgacha Pratis, he embarked on a fundraising trip to New York and ended up settling there. While Rav Aharon Kotler and Rav Moshe Feinstein rebuilt non-chassidishe Jewry, Rav Yoel laid the foundations for Chassidishe America. Rav Yoel knew exactly what he wanted and built it according to the script he wrote.

While he was often add odds halachicly and hashkaficly with Rav Aharon and Rav Moshe they had the greatest mutual respect and admiration for each other. So much so that when Rav Aharon asked the Satmar Rov not to drive his car after Shkia on Friday, which the Satmar Rov held was permitted until a later Zman, he obeyed without question.

The Satmar Rov built Williamsburg into a bastion of Satmar Chasidus and founded Kiryas Yoel with many Mosdos of Chinuch, a great deal of torah learning, and their enviable Chesed network which touches every corner of chesed to Jews of all walks of life regardless of affiliation and background. But more than just building Satmar he was a "Rebbes Rebbe", in his fatherly way guiding many other transplanted chasidishe courts and helping them rebuild and firmly plant their roots on the once treifeh soil of America. The Rebbe taught us how to stand tall in America and be proud Jews just like we were in the Shtetlich of Europe. For this all of American Jewry and even world Jewry has a great amount of respect and gratitude.
