Rabbi Kahana and (his insightful) Parashat Ki Tetze 5771

[Notice that this was written in 2011 and is still relevant in 2018 and even more so]
BS”D
Parashat Ki Tetze 5771
Devarim 22:1-2

If you see your brother’s (fellow Jew’s) ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but return it to its owner. If your brother (the owner) is not close to you or if you do not know who owns it, take it into your home to be with you until your brother seeks it out, then return it (after receiving descriptively – signs of description).

Part A: What is HaShem planning for His people in Eretz Yisrael?

In our unpredictable and erratic world one immutable principle has stood the test of thousands of years with no sign that it will change in the next *thousand – that anything of consequence or significance which has occurred has involved, now involves or will involve the Jewish people!

Empires, distant or near in time or space, rose and fell, and will rise and fall because of the Jewish nation. And if we can’t always discern the historical connections of all great historic events with the Jewish people, it is due to our intellectual limitations. But the principle is intact – humanity, and its march in time, revolves around HaShem’s chosen nation just as the planets orbit the sun. And just as each planet revolves in its particular orbit contingent on the gravitational energy exerted on it by the sun, so too do the nations of the world develop in relation to the direct or indirect Jewish influence on them.

The descendants of Eisav and Yishmael have always been closely involved with the descendants of Avraham, Yitzchak and Ya’akov. Hence, their development is more sophisticated than cultures which were less involved with the knowledge of HaShem, as passed on through the Jewish people.

Numerous studies that have been made into the genealogy of major European leaders found that Jewish blood – from mother or father or a grandparent – flowed freely in their veins.
Eisav and Yishmael as individuals, had a love-hate relationship with their Jewish brothers – Yitzchak and Ya’akov – that they passed on to their descendants. The Christian and Moslem peoples have so much to be indebted to the Jewish nation and our teachings, but the scratch in their brains makes it impossible for them to live with us or to live without us. When we are in the galut, they say “Go back to Eretz Yisrael”; and now that we have returned to Eretz Yisrael they say, “You do not belong there”.

I wish to point out three nations in particular: England in Western Europe, Turkey with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia, and Iran (Persia) deep in Asia. There is no apparent connection between them, save for one – that aside from the Arab countries, these three are the most anti-Israel nations in the world today.

England is the seat of intellectual anti-Israel feeling. Their universities boycott ours, and every Israeli is in danger of being arrested, which prevents ranking army officers and cabinet ministers from going there. Turkey is regressing into Islamic darkness, with the initiation fee being the severing of its ties with the Jews in Eretz Yisrael. Iran is Shi’ite, removing them from the thought processes of rational people.

But why just these three nations?

I suggest:

They have a common historic experience. At some time in their history, each was an empire with colonial holdings which included Eretz Yisrael; until HaShem’s stopwatch sounded and the Holy Land expelled them. Their insatiable jealousy at losing the site of the fulcrum of human activity leaves them little room for rationality. Their anti-Eretz Yisrael policies will in time be the cause of their destruction as national entities.

The prophets predicted the fall of the great empires of their times: Assyria, Babylon, Egypt and Phoenicia. Were they alive today, the prophets would speak of the downfall of all the nations that are preventing the fulfillment of our God-given obligation to return and rebuild the Biblical lands in our possession.

To return to the question of where HaShem is taking us:

With every passing day, the isolation of Medinat Yisrael from the “family of nations” is becoming a fait accompli. Not only are our enemies becoming more bold in their alienation, but many Jews in the United States – orthodox and otherwise, so fearful of their frail status as accepted equals – compete with the worst of our enemies in mudslinging at our holy Medina.

The prophecy of what our destiny will be in the generation of the Mashiach was delivered by HaShem through the foul mouth of the evil Bil’am, when he said (Bamidbar 23,9):

For from their beginning,
I see them as mountain peaks,
and I behold them as hills; it is a nation
that will dwell alone,
and will not be reckoned among the nations.

Herein lies the master plan of the Creator.

As we in Eretz Yisrael are increasingly excluded from international forums designed to de-legitimize the Jewish state [. . .] we will draw ever closer to the God of Israel.

The evil Bil’am saw the future return of the Jewish nation to HaShem and the Torah. It will be brought about by our non-reliance on foreign “friends”, coupled with Hashem’s miraculous intervention paving the way for unprecedented military victories.

The RaMBaM (hilchot Melachim) states that the Mashiach will lead us in our final wars. From here we understand that the Mashiach will have a military background, which puts an entirely new perspective on who will be HaShem’s messenger to redeem His people.

Part B: The future demography of Eretz Yisrael

[. . .] The wide expanse of the Golan is waiting for millions of Jews to settle there and infuse the area with Torah life. Yehuda, Shomron, the Negev and Galil, as well as the areas of Biblical Eretz Yisrael waiting to be returned to us, will be settled by tens if not hundreds of millions of Jews returning home.

From where will all these Jews come?

For the answer we have to think “outside of the box”.

They will not come from the Jewish community in the United States, which is quickly dwindling through intermarriage, as well as the apathy and antagonism of most orthodox Jews towards God’s greatest miracle of the last 2000 years. And the Jews of Western Europe and South America are following suit.

The 60+ years of opportunity for the Jews in the West is rapidly ending, for the timetable of HaShem waits for no man.

The big numbers will come from the hundreds of millions of Jewish descendants of the Ten Tribes and anusim (Jews who were forced to accept Christianity) who will awaken one day to their Jewish heritage. They are the Jewish nation of the future, as prophesied by Yechezkel (11:17)

  • Therefore say: ‘This is what the LORD says: I will gather you from the nations and bring you back from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you back the land of Israel again.
As MaLBiM (Rav Meir Leibush ben Yehiel Michel, 1809 – 1879) explains this verse:

  • “In the future, HaShem will gather the Ten Tribes from faraway lands, those who did not return at the time of the second Temple, and I will give them the land of Israel”
With this in mind, I would like to suggest an additional understanding of the verses quoted at the beginning of this message:

The first verse deals with lost articles that belong to your fellow Jew.

The second verse deals with your Jewish brother who is lost to his people, as follows.

If your brother Jew is far from you (in the spiritual sense), to the extent that you can no longer recognize any Jewish features in his life, bring him into your home (Eretz Yisrael) until his heart is opened and he begins to seek out his Jewish roots. Then be prepared to return him to those roots.

This is what to expect in the near future. HaShem will awaken millions of our brothers and sisters who are now distant from their roots, and return them miraculously to us in Eretz Yisrael. From these many millions will begin the next stage in the Jewish nation’s march to be reunited with our Father in Heaven. [Me: This is happening now.]

May it happen speedily in our day.

Shabbat Shalom,
Nachman Kahana

Life After Death

LIFE AFTER DEATH

Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi has done a phenomenal favor for all Torah observant Jews and especially those who are wavering in their observance of Shabbos and Halacha (the laws given to us on Mt Sinai by G–d to His People). After viewing these, one cannot say they do not understand what Hashem wants of us, why we are here on earth, et al.

Rav Richter: Have the Jews been Out-trumped by Trump

Welcome back Rav Richter. The Rav discusses recent occurrences in Israel (while he was away) and portions from Parsha KiSeitze.

Can we rely on the following?
And if so, why in fact, publicize it?

A senior government minister told Channel 2 that President Trump's remarks promising that Israel would have to "pay a higher price" due to his embassy move to Jerusalem should be dismissed.

"This is more of a negotiating tactic," the minister said, adding that" Israel and the US are coordinated.”

THEY’RE BEATING UP THE KIDS AGAIN!

They're Beating Up The Kids Again!

The disgusting leftists can demonstrate by the thousands in Tel Aviv against the Torah Laws, but our Brave Youngsters (who live by the Torah) get beat up mercilessly. [Please see the video at Facebook, I cannot get a copy because I am not a member.]

"From Yekutiel Ben-Yaakov (his Facebook page), June 17, 2018:
The cops and troops are beating the youth badly without provocation on the side of the families and the young people that came to protest the violent expulsion. Please forward the link anywhere you can. They closed the area to the media so this is the only outlet to publish the desecration."

This (following) incident was covered by Esser Agaroth (2¢):

"This hilltop was approved almost 20 years ago, during Prime Minister Ehud Baraq's government. The Beth-El Ulpanah neighborhood was destroyed 13 years after it had been constructed, and the first residents had moved in. In other words, the Israeli Government is becoming increasingly bold when it comes to reneging on its commitments to the Jewish People to protect it, to its homes, and to protect its Divinely promised Land. An Arab pops up after 2 years, 13 years, and now 20 years, claiming ownership of almost always goaded into it by self-hating Leftist."

VIDEO AT Facebook

Here is a still from the video. You can see the “officer” on top of the youth. All the boys came running [to intervene].

"From the video, you can see that there are residents and Torah observant supporters who are not willing to take their expulsion and destruction of their neighborhood lying down. There are also still some prominent students of Rav Meir Kahane hy"d residing in Kfar Tapu'ah, including those who were very close with his son Rav Binyamin hy"d. However, they are very much in the minority, and recognize the gravity of the situation. And that situation is not simply that the government will throw Jews out of their homes at the blink of an eye, give up land to Arabs who want to annihilate us, kowtow to the non-Jewish nations instead of listening to their own constituents, let alone to the Holy One, Blessed Be He."

You can read the rest of this disturbing expose, not in the news anywhere else, but at Esser Agaroth (2¢)!

Slowly the Israeli (not Jewish) Government is giving away Jewish Land, that was forbidden by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, and by Hashem in our Holy Torah.

I first became aware of this at TomerDevorah

Generation 49 of Seder Olam

Generation 49 of Seder Olam
Pre-Messianic
Hebrew years 5760-5880 - From 2000 CE

With the 49th Generation, the world has entered the last generation before the ultimate 50th Jubilee of generations that will mark the start of the Messianic era. This ultimate period will open from Hebrew year 5880 (equivalent to 2120 CE). The 49th Generation is thus to be understood as Pre-Messianic era, and world events unfold to confirm it.

This 49th Generation is the 7th set of 7 Generations, and the importance of the number 7 has been explained throughout this site. As a reminder, it has been explained at the time of the Exodus (click here for more information), in the 21st Generation (also a multiple of 7), to show that there is a recurrent pattern of divine intervention towards mankind, and in particular towards the Jewish people, at every return of a Sabbatical "generation" (by Sabbatical "generation", we mean a generation which is a multiple of the number 7). And these Sabbatical generations thus far have been the following ones:
  • - 7th generation: death of Cain, as promised by God, and start of a new era of mankind with the Bronze Age
  • - 14th generation: the Flood, as the eradication of evil on Earth, and re-start of the Creation with new rules
  • - 21st generation: the accomplishment of the divine Covenant with the Exodus of the Hebrews and their establishment in the Promised Land
  • - 28th generation: the redemption of the Israelites after their captivity in Babylon, and the construction of the 2nd Temple
  • - 35th generation: end of the Jewish political nation at the hand of the Romans, and completion of the Talmud; the Israelites become a spiritual nation
  • - 42nd generation: strenghening of the Jewish spiritual nation in the Diaspora (Zohar, Maimonides, Nahmanides), thus preparing for the future redemption
  • - 49th generation: final return to Sion (Zion) and pre-Messianic times
The 49th Generation is thus the last Sabbatical generation before the Jubilee of Mankind (the 50th "Messianic" generation), similarly to the fact that a 49th year is always the Sabbatical year (7 x 7 years) prior to a Jubilee year (the 50th year).

Year 5760 – 2000 CE – The land of milk and honey
Year 5760 – 2000 CE – The Jews in the world
Year 5760 – 2000 CE – The ingathering of the Jewish people
Year 5760 – 2000 CE – Islam and Israel
Year 5760 – 2000 CE – The "Exile of Ishmael”

Year 5762 – 2001 CE – Year of Jubilee
While some of these things were fulfilled at that time and some later, while some are left for the Messiah. We have learnt that God will one day build Jerusalem and display a certain fixed star flashing with seventy streamers and seventy flames in the midst of the firmament, and it will shine and flash for seventy days. It will appear on the sixth day of the week on the 25th [day] of the sixth month, and will disappear on the 7th day after seventy days. On the first day it will be seen in the city of Rome, and on that day three lofty walls of that city shall fall and a mighty palace shall be overthrown, and the ruling of that city shall die. Then that star will be visible throughout the whole world. In that time mighty wars will arise in all quarters of the world, and no faith shall be found among men.
--- Zohar, Balak 212b

Year 5769 – 2009 CE – Birth of the Messiah
For some Jewish scholars, the Messiah came to existence in the decade starting in 5760 (in Hebrew it is year תש''ס where the letter ס means סוף --end), which could be any year up to the end of that decade, in year 5769 AM (or 2009 CE). Of course, the time of his revelation to the world is not set yet and is not known to any human being. Let's recall that Moses was revealed to his people as their leader to redemption from slavery at the age of 80. This belief about the birth of Messiah is corroborated with the fact that, every time in Jewish History, when evil or good is about to happen, the contrary is also born to be a response to it. Here, when the Muslims rose against Edom in 2001, the seed of Messiah has come to life in the same time or decade.

Year 5778 – 2017 CE – USA recognizes Jerusalem as capital of Israel
On the 6th of December 2017 (which was night time in Israel so equivalent to the start of date 19 Kislev 5778), US President Donald Trump, who also started office in this special year of 2017, formally accepted the decision of the US Congress passed 22 years before about recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

Coincidence or not, a memo was written on the same day of 19 Kislev by Ben-Gurion regarding this issue debated at the Knesset a few days earlier. In this memo, he wrote:

  • Israel's position on the question of Jerusalem came to me as clear and final during the Knesset on the 14th of Kislev (5.12.49) by the government and all the factions in the Knesset. Jerusalem is an inseparable part of the State of Israel and its eternal capital. No vote at the UN would change this historical position. Dated: 19 Kislev (10.12.49)

This will be updated in light of events that will unfold in the course of the present 49th generation

This Company Embeds Microchips in its Employees
(how did this come about?)

"McMullan is the president of Three Square Market, a technology company that provides self-service mini-markets to hospitals, hotels, and company break rooms. Last August, he became one of roughly 50 employees at its headquarters in River Falls, Wisconsin, who volunteered to have a chip injected into their hand.

"The idea came about in early 2017, he says, when he was on a business trip to Sweden—a country where some people are getting subcutaneous microchips to do things like enter secure buildings or book train tickets. It’s one of very few places where chip implants, which have been around for quite a while, have taken off in some fashion." To read the entire revolting article, go to technology review.

The [Age of] Technological Revolution

Technological revolution is a relatively short period in history when one technology (or better a set of technologies) is replaced by another technology (or by the set of technologies). It is an era of an accelerated technological progress characterized not only by new innovations, but also their application and diffusion.

A difference between technological revolution and technological change[1] is not clearly defined. The technological change we could see as an introduction of an individual (single) new technology while the technological revolution as a period in which more new technologies are adopted at the almost same time.[citation needed] These new technologies or technological changes are usually interconnected—as the third Kranzberg's law of technology says: "Technology comes in packages, big and small.” Wikipedia

Industrial Revolutions of Our World through Time
  • The First Industrial Revolution: 1760 – 1840 [i.e., First Steam Engine]
  • The Second Industrial Revolution: 1870 – 1914 [i.e., telegraph/Morse, telephone, first air flight and Henry Ford]
  • The Third Industrial Revolution: 1969 – 2000
  • The Fourth Industrial Revolution: the digital revolution occurring since the middle of the last century [we are in this one]
Revolutions are a result of humankind's desire to develop, expand, and grow. This has led to all the significant inventions in our society.

The First and Second Industrial Revolutions interesting engineering

How the First and Second Industrial Revolutions Changed Our World: The Industrial Revolution can be summed up as the revolution that happened to the industrial sector in the past 300 years. But it still can't be explained in just one sentence, as it doesn’t do justice to the greatness of the revolution. It brought about a radical change that was direly needed.

The Digital Revolution (i.e. Third Industrial Revolution)

The Digital Revolution, also known as the Third Industrial Revolution, is the shift from mechanical and analogue electronic technology to digital electronics which began anywhere from the late 1950s to the late 1970s with the adoption and proliferation of digital computers and digital record keeping that continues to the present day.[1] Implicitly, the term also refers to the sweeping changes brought about by digital computing and communication technology during (and after) the latter half of the 20th century. Analogous to the Agricultural Revolution and Industrial Revolution, the Digital Revolution marked the beginning of the Information Age. Wikipedia

Since the beginning of the Great Recession in the summer of 2008, governments, the business community, and civil society have been embroiled in a fierce debate over how to restart the global economy. While austerity measures and fiscal, labor, and market reforms will all be necessary, they are not sufficient to re-grow the economy. Let me explain by way of an anecdote. Just months after arriving in office, the new Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, asked me to come to Berlin to help her administration address the question of how to create new jobs and grow the German economy in the twenty-first century. I began my remarks by asking the chancellor, “How do you grow the German economy, the EU economy, or, for that matter, the global economy, in the last stages of a great energy era and an industrial revolution built on it?” worldfinancialreview

The Fourth Industrial Revolution [think A1, Robotics]

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is the fourth major industrial era since the initial Industrial Revolution of the 18th century. It is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres.[1] It is marked by emerging technology breakthroughs in a number of fields, including robotics, artificial intelligence, blockchain, nanotechnology, quantum computing, biotechnology, The Internet of Things, The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), fifth-generation wireless technologies (5G), additive manufacturing/3D printing and fully autonomous vehicles. Klaus Schwab has associated it with the "second machine age"[2] in terms of the effects of digitization and artificial intelligence (AI) on the economy, but added a broader role for advances in biological technologies.[3][need quotation to verify] It is disrupting almost every industry in every country. And the breadth and depth of these changes herald the transformation of entire systems of production, management, and governance.

Schwab sees as part of this revolution "emerging technology breakthroughs" in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, quantum computing and nanotechnology.[4] The fourth wave of the industrial revolution is expected to see the heavy implementation of several emerging technologies with a high potential of disruptive effects.

ISRAEL IS THE ONLY JEWISH STATE WE HAVE

Israel is the ONLY Jewish state we have
by Rabbi Menachem Margolin

The vast majority of Diaspora Jews know that helping Israel may be the best investment for their own futures

In an article published in The New York Times on the 13th of August, Mr. Ronald Lauder, a great man with many merits and to whom the Jewish people owe a lot for his generous and tireless efforts for them and for the State of Israel, wrote: “The State of Israel distorts Jewish values and harms democracy and equality. This will cause more Jews to distance themselves from the State of Israel. The West is indifferent and even hostile to it.” In addition, Mr. Lauder wrote that the behavior of the State of Israel is “a great threat to the future of the Jewish people.”

Strong words. Coming as they do from Mr. Lauder, one must take notice. But just as one owes generous friends a fair hearing, we also owe it to them to call them out when they are mistaken. This task, on behalf of the European Jewish Association, and on behalf of traditional and authentic Judaism, falls on my shoulders today.

The language and vehemence of the arguments put forward by Mr Lauder are startling, and no doubt were designed to be so. As is the framing of the premise in absolutist and divisive terms, effectively the language of them or us, or our side or their side. This on its own is deeply regrettable. As an American, Mr. Lauder is well aware of President Lincoln’s famous quote that a house divided cannot stand. Looking at the current American political landscape, the foundations do indeed look a bit rocky, and perhaps this helped frame his thinking… But Israel? I profoundly disagree.

Let us be clear, Mr. Lauder’s arguments are nothing new. There have always been differences of opinion among the Jewish people about what will guarantee the future of the nation: assimilation among the nations, or rather separation from them.

Enough years have passed for us to know the truth today. Those who do not like Jews did everything to persecute them. They persecuted the enlightened, they persecuted the modern, and they persecuted the assimilated with as much, if not more, venom and hatred, as the traditional. Looking at Israel’s enemies today, are there any that realistically make any distinction between the branches? No, it’s the tree that they want to uproot.

That Judaism that survived is thanks to those who fought a stubborn struggle to preserve the roots: and those roots, without arrogance or boastfulness are those of authentic Judaism. The reality is that the high percentage of assimilationists among the Jewish people (over 70 percent and including those who left the Jewish people and have no traces left) were from the same group that sought safety in the nothingness.

The Reform movement has been around for well over a couple of hundred years, but anyone who enters a Reform synagogue and asks his or her neighbor whether that person’s grandfather was also a Reform Jew will receive a negative answer in 99% of the cases. Because reality has proven that in most cases, the grandchild of the Reform practitioner is no longer, in being or in practice, Jewish.

In a study published in Los Angeles by Anthony Gordon and Richard Horowitz, they researched how the situation looked with regard to 100 first-generation Jews after four generations, when spread out amongst the various groups. The answers leave no room for doubt: from the secular, four descendants will remain Jewish; from the Reform, 13; from the Conservative, 52; from the Modern Orthodox, 337; and from the ultra-Orthodox Jews, 3,398 Jews. Even with a margin factored in for statistical error, the facts are stark in their clarity.

We must take a look at the long-term — and a sober look at that — at what the future of the Jewish people is, and not be alarmed by background noise and criticism. We certainly should not take on board the criticism of Western leaders, whose very history and approach is often testament to at worst a lost, or at best a very badly broken moral compass.

There is no doubt that Judaism should be pleasant and welcoming to every person and to every Jew, and certainly more can and should be done to be as inclusive and open as possible. But in no case should we be sacrificing the roots of the tree, those of Judaism itself, for the sake of prevailing political circumstances, trend or movement. Judaism teaches us that every person must be a disciple of Aharon HaCohen, who loves peace and pursues peace, loves people and brings them closer to the Torah. But not to bring the Torah closer to them. In other words, it is up to us to embrace the Torah, not the other way around.

The State of Israel is the life insurance of the Jewish people. Every country in the world has known dark periods and the Jewish people have no insurance certificate anywhere else in the world. The vast majority of Diaspora Jews understand that their vital assistance to the State of Israel may someday be the best investment they have made for their own futures. American Jewry, which contributed so much, including driving so much that is positive in Israel, I believe, understands this well. Israel is the only Jewish state we have.

Therefore, every Jew in the world who cares about the continuity of the Jewish people must do everything he can to ensure that the State of Israel will always remain an authentic Jewish state. One that even after four generations will remain Jewish. Therefore, it must be Orthodox Jewish at its core.

It must also be sensitive, humane, behave respectfully to all its citizens and continues to be a beacon of justice and honesty. On evidence, I believe that it continues to be a beacon, and I and the many thousands of Jews that the European Jewish Association represents, continue to see it — and with pride — as such. Of course, and as I have said, more can be done to be more inclusive and to reflect modernity, but first and foremost it must and forever remain — a Jewish state. Because we have no other people and we have no other country.

The Sinkhole That's Swallowing Louisiana

Documentary 2017 | Sinkholes

In a leafy suburb near Tampa, Florida, on February 28, 2013, a giant hole opened up under the bedroom floor of Jeffrey Bush, swallowing him as he slept. His body was never found. Bush was a victim of a #sinkhole—a worldwide hazard that lurks wherever limestone and other water-soluble rocks underpin the soil. When carbon dioxide from the air dissolves in rainwater, it forms a weak acid that attacks soft rocks, riddling them with holes like Swiss cheese. Sinkholes can occur gradually when the surface subsides into bowl shaped depressions or suddenly when the ground gives way. These geological hazards have swallowed highways, apartment buildings, horses, camels, even golfers, with monster-size holes cracking the earth from Siberia to Louisiana.

Windmills are more than just a traditional part of the Dutch landscape; they have played a key role in the war Holland has waged against the sea for centuries. Today the Dutch are using ever-more innovative methods to combat rising sea levels, strategies that may also benefit other nations confronting the effects of climate change. Martha Teichner reports. Mystery Russian Satellite – Trouble in Alaska

Russian Strategic Bombers Deploy near Alaska

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian military says that two nuclear-capable strategic bombers have flown to the easternmost Chukotka Peninsula, near Alaska, as part of an air force exercise.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the Tu-160 bombers flew about 7,000 kilometers (4,350 Miles) from their home base near Saratov in southwestern Russia to Anadyr, on Chukotka, before returning to their home base. The ministry said the mission was the first time the bombers had flown to Chukotka, which faces Alaska across the Bering Strait.

The ministry said the air force exercise also involved the Tu-95 strategic bombers and tanker planes.
The Russian military has increased the intensity and scope of its drills amid strain in relations with the U.S. and its allies. The flight demonstrated that Russian bombers could be deployed close to the U.S. the Intelligencer

THE CONCEPT OF MONARCHY – Parshas Shoftim

THE CONCEPT OF MONARCHY
By Roy S. Neuberger

Recently, my wife and I were privileged to travel to Russia for a brief but fascinating trip under the leadership of Rabbi Aryeh Katzin, a principal force behind Russian kiruv in the U. S. Rabbi Katzin heads RAJE (Russian-American Jewish Experience) and founded Sinai Academy. He grew up under Communism in Russia, learned Torah in Yerushalayim, and was recruited some thirty years ago by American godolim, principal among them Rabbi Elya Svei zt”l

Our trip was fascinating for many reasons, but what came across intensely was the amazing fact that Jews in Russia, for the first time in centuries – perhaps since the Churban! – are unafraid. This impression comes not from propaganda, but from personal conversations with many people.

Despite intense controversy over Vladimir Putin in the Western World, there is no doubt that he is beloved by observant Jews in Russia. They walk in the street with yarmulkas and, by their own testimony, there is no evidence of anti-Semitism in Russia today. I am not saying that “esev sonai l’Yaakov …Esav hates Yaakov”has been repealed. What I do say is that government policy, from the top down, is strongly sympathetic to Torah life and Torah institutions.

I first heard the following story several years ago from a distinguished rosh yeshiva at a large yeshiva outside Moscow: Mr. Putin was a mediocre student in high school, but he had a teacher named Mina Yuditskaya Berliner who saw in him tremendous potential. She taught him to identify and strengthen his koach, and from this moment began his spectacular rise.

This teacher was a Jewish lady.

To Mr. Putin’s everlasting credit, he never forgot what he owed to her.

Because of this and other childhood experiences with kindly Jewish neighbors, Mr. Putin’s attitude toward Jews in general became extremely benevolent. When he achieved power, he remembered his beloved teacher, to the extent that he bought her an apartment in Israel and visited her there on official state trips as president. One Jewish lady changed the world!

Can you imagine: because of her, millions of Russian Jews benefited! Jewish communities in Russia have no problems with the government. Many large buildings and facilities housing Jewish institutions have been given to them gratis by the government. Amazingly, Mr. Putin himself contributed one month of his salary toward building the enormous and sophisticated Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center in Moscow!

No matter what the Western media say, Vladimir Putin’s record toward Russian Jews and Jewish institutions cannot be equaled by most statesman around the world. From whom did I learn this? Among others, a rosh yeshiva; two observant businessmen who emigrated from New York to Moscow; a dayan, a businessman who runs a large Jewish publishing house, a law professor and distinguished rabbonim in St. Petersburg and Moscow. We met with Rabbi Alexander Boroda, president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia. Articulate even in English, Rabbi Boroda operates kiruv centers throughout Russia and is one of Mr. Putin’s close advisors.

At this season of teshuva, it is instructive to contemplate how one person can affect the lives of millions of our brethren. Mrs. Berliner’s innate goodness and desire for tikkun olam was part of her Yiddishe neshoma. She changed the world. We can all change the world by cultivating chessed and acting with dignity, living up to the example inherited from Avraham Avinu, who changed the entire world by demonstrating the nobility of the service of the Ribono shel Olam

In our era, “politics,” which really should be the service of mankind, has become a term signifying corruption and obsession with power. Monarchy is archaic; there are very few, if any, real kings. The celebrated Queen of England, for example, is a powerless figurehead.

This week’s Parsha, lehavdil, reveals the Torah view regarding the head of government, a subject which I think it is vital to contemplate. “When you come to the Land that Hashem, your G-d, gives you, and possess it, and settle in it … you shall surely set over yourself a king whom Hashem, your G-d, shall choose. From among your brethren shall you set a king over yourself; you cannot place over yourself a foreign man, who is not your brother.” (Dvarim 17:14-15)
It is fascinating to examine the view of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch on the role of the Jewish king: “The king, who is at the head of the nation, holds all its powers, and – with none above him but Hashem his G-d – directs his people in the way of G-d’s service.” (Hirsch Chumash Vayikra 4:22) Rabbi Hirsch indicates that the king is the prime teacher of the nation in the ways of serving Hashem, like a powerful mussar rebbe

Rabbi Hirsch continues, quoting Chazal: “Fortunate is the generation whose ruler seeks atonement by making an offering for the wrong he has committed in error. How must the conscience of the ordinary citizen be stirred by the conscientious conduct of the king! And if he is so deeply affected by a transgression he has committed in error, how much more deeply will he be affected if he has been guilty of an intentional sin!” (Horayos 10b)

We live in a cynical world, but the Torah is not cynical; we believe in the perfect goodness of a world governed by Torah and we are awaiting ben Dovid, the Moshiach

“The Chachamim and Noviim did not yearn for the Messianic Era in order to have dominion over the entire world, to rule over the gentiles … or to eat, drink and celebrate, but rather … to be free [to involve themselves] in Torah and wisdom without pressure or disturbance, so that they would merit the World to Come….” (Rambam, Hilchos Melachim)

May we see it soon in our days!

Parshas Shoftim – "Judges You Must Establish . . ."

Parshas Shoftim PERCEPTIONS
by Rabbi Pinchas Winston Shlit”a

This week’s PERCEPTIONS and
CONNECTING THE DOTS
is dedicated in memory of
Sara Chana bat Sarah Imeinu, z”l,
a friend, supporter, and someone who
was clearly devoted to Hashem and His Torah.

Judges and law enforcers you must
establish in all your communities . . .(Devarim 16:18)

EVERY YEAR WHEN I get to Parashas Shoftim, I am reminded of the world in which we live. The truth is, I do not need this week’s parsha to do that. All I have to do is read a newspaper. I mean something else.

The Torah is God’s program for history. It is built upon ideal concepts that are supposed to help a person achieve personal perfection, and the world, ultimate fulfillment. It pre-dated Creation by thousands of years and will outlive history as we know it. It is the word of God, eternal, and FAR above our everyday mundane reality.

So how is it that the Torah talks about such mundane matters as court systems and police forces? These sound like issues for societies that do not have Torah, and which have a difficult time getting their members to rise above crime and strive for loftier goals. It’s as if the Torah is giving up on the Jewish people before they even have a chance to try and set themselves up as a Torah nation. It’s as if the Torah is saying, “You’re going to be just like everyone else.” How disappointing.

We’ve discussed this idea in the past, how the version of Torah we currently learn is not the ideal version we were supposed to have received, prior to the sin of the golden calf. When Moshe Rabbeinu broke the first set of tablets, we lost our opportunity to receive that Messianic level of Torah. That one is based upon the same eternal concepts as our rendition of Torah, but expressed in a far loftier manner.

The sin of the calf greatly lessened our spiritual capacity. After that we were no longer capable or worthy of receiving the Torah of the Messianic Era. The Torah we have now is meant to try and lead us in that direction, and to allow us to rectify the world to whatever level we can. How’s it working out so far?

In the incredible work, “Yesod v’Shoresh HaAvodah,” by Rav Alexander Ziskind, in the section about the “Ten Days of Repentance,” he mentions the real damage of a sin. By doing a sin, the person has lowered himself spiritually and become worthy of punishment in the process. But the ultimate damage is the profanation of God’s Name that the sin caused.

Any time a person sins, less Divine light enters the world. The sin blocks the spiritual pipe, and prevents God’s light from positively impacting Creation. Just as a child who misbehaves denies his parents’ the pleasure of giving him nice things, likewise a sinning person denies the Divine Presence an opportunity to do what it likes most: bless mankind.
The prophet Yechezkel says that this situation will be so bad at the End-of-Days that God will be forced to bring the Final Redemption just to end the “Chillul Hashem,” the profanation of God’s Name constantly committed amongst the nations of the world. The amount of light entering the world will be so minimal that if God doesn’t change the situation Himself, the world will fall apart on its own.

A person might ask, “What difference can it possibly make to Creation if I personally improve myself and work on sanctifying the Name of God? I’m only ONE person against millions of others who are profaning His Name!”

As the Nefesh HaChaim points out, a person never knows how much their effort is worth in the eyes of God. It can be capable of a far greater impact than they might have otherwise thought. And does it matter anyhow? The main thing is that a person does whatever they personally can to make the world better, and it starts by being more concerned about God’s Name than their own.

DEDICATION OPPORTUNITIES

Reincarnation is a hot topic, as I have written about already. This has caught the attention of my distributor of Sha’ar HaGilgulim (Hardcopy), who would like me to package up “Reincarnation Clarified” and “What Goes Around,” into a single hardcopy book for worldwide distribution. To cover the cost of the printing, I need to raise the money through dedications. If you are interested in dedicating the entire sefer, or contributing to its publication, please let me know at pinchasw@thirtysix.org at your earliest convenience.

Also, attached is a sample of my latest book, “See Ya: Regarding the Downfall of American Society.” This is a book in need of dedication as well. If anyone is interested, please let me know. The paperback is now available through Amazon. Click here.

CONNECTING THE DOTS
AUGUST 12-18, 2018, ISSUE #1

I stopped writing CTD for two reasons. The last American election brought out the worst in the media and, between the new levels of deceit and childishness, I had a difficult time stomaching it. I began to greatly limit my exposure. The second reason I stopped CTD is that Amazon made it much easier for me to constantly publish new books. The books themselves are where I do most of my “dot” connecting.

Though I am REALLY enjoying the book writing, b”H, and do a fair bit of dot-connecting in Perceptions, I felt that some element of what I do best was still missing. This has been confirmed to me on several occasions by readers who have urged me to return to at least a bi-weekly CTD. This week’s mailing represents a compromise: a tag along CTD at the end of the parsha sheet, with a twist.

I’m asking YOU, the READER, to supply me with an issue to be addressed. I would like to receive questions from YOU for me to deal with. This will save me the time of scanning the news, which I have little patience for these days, and allow me to focus on what people are thinking about. No names need to be attached to the question.
I was actually asked this last week:

I am aware that there are many who condemn the recent passage of the Basic Law declaring Israel as the Nation State of the Jewish people. I'm not interested in the political implications of the law and all the people who think it means the end of a democratic Israel. I'm intrigued by the fact that it happened at all—that the government of Medinat Yisrael openly declared that Israel is a Jewish state just eight months after the US recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. These are Biblical realities that secular governments are openly validating . . . I’m looking for your thoughts about how these two validations happening less than a year apart, are connected to geulah.

Redemption, explained the Vilna Gaon, is kind of two-steps forward, one-step back process. But, even the step backwards, he added, is really a step forwards as well, when everything is taken into account. It just looks to US as if it is backwards. What this means is that history can be difficult to read, from a redemption point of view. It can be hard, even impossible to properly interpret everyday events, and what they ultimately mean to the redemption process.

Therefore, it cannot be downplayed when at such a late stage of history, and especially while Liberalism is so strong around the world, that America has acknowledged Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, or that a secular Israeli government is bold enough to declare Israel first and foremost a Jewish state. It is easy to let these happenings to get buried among the many issues impacting world history today. But the person with an eye to redemption knows that they are signs of the geulah times, not just something else randomly catching the attention of the public.

Parshat Shoftim – Meshuach Milchama & Today's IDF

BS”D
Parashat Shoftim 5778
Rabbi Nachman Kahana

The Parsha and Current Events: Meshuach Milchama and Today’s IDF

The mitzva of Meshuach Milchama (the kohen anointed for war) relives the long history of warfare that was our lot since the earliest dawn of our nation.
Avraham formed an army of 318 soldiers when he attacked the four kings to save his nephew Lot.
Yaakov was prepared to fight, if need be, the 400 soldiers of his brother Aisav.
In our desert experience Moshe established an army under the command of Yehoshua who fought Amalek and others.
The 400-year Shoftim period saw many wars when the nation fought with armies on the tribal level.
Beginning with King Shaul, and during the following 400 plus years, the Jewish nation had a standing army when the Babylonians destroyed the first Temple and exiled our nation at the time of King Tzidkiyahu.
When Ezra and Nechemia established the Second Jewish Commonwealth 70 years later, it is recorded that as the workers labored to rebuild the walls of Yerushalayim and the Bet Hamikdash, they were protected by the naissant Jewish army.
The army functioned for the next 420 years when the Romans destroyed our second Temple and exiled our people at the time of King Agrippa II.
Countries the world over have armies. However, in Israel the army has a country, because every important decision takes into account its security implications.
We love our soldiers. The young people begin their private physical training while still in high school in preparation for army service. How great the disappointment when a youngster does not make the highly dangerous special units of Tzahal.  Even more astounding, adults willingly report for reserve duty in great loyalty.
Notwithstanding the special place Israel’s army holds among its citizens, things could be better. Today our military is composed of an army of Jews, but it cannot be said that it is a Jewish army. Although among the basic bylaws of Tzahal, training is suspended on Shabbat and holidays, and a command to violate them is legally binding only under life-threatening conditions. In addition, kashrut is compulsory at all military installations, Yet, despite the army’s efforts to adhere to religious practices, there are halachic-based factors that warrant the statement that it is not yet a “Jewish” army.
The following is a depiction of how a Jewish army would look today.
1. In all Jewish wars, the Meshuach Milchamah dresses in the 8 garments of a Kohen Gadol and goes to the front lines to address the troops.
Among other statements he declares: “Listen Israel, today you are about to wage war against your enemies. Do not be faint-hearted. Do not be afraid. Do not panic and do not break ranks before them. HaShem is the One accompanying you to do battle against your enemies to deliver you” (Devarim 20,3-4).
By his very appearance, the Meshuah Milchamah is sending a powerful message to the troops. Other armies fight for home and nation, but the Jewish army fights for the sanctification of the Holy Name. Despite their rhetoric, our enemies will  continue to come against us because of our spiritual connection to the Creator. In their minds, vanquishing the Jewish army would prove that there is no Jewish god.
So, in a Jewish army every soldier would be aware that he represents all Jewish history and the Creator himself. The order of the day when going into battle is total victory with no mercy for the enemies of HaShem and his chosen people.
As Rashi states in our parasha (20,1) “Have no mercy on them for they would not have mercy on you”.
Let a thousand mothers of our enemies weep for their dead sons, but no one Jewish mother even have to worry over her son.

2. The army is no place for women, period.  The army is a killing machine, whereas women are associated with the giving of life.
Not only is there no place for women in frontline units like Caracal or the newly established tank crews, but not even in benign office work as a soldier.
With that said, it is known that functions requiring multitasking and lengthy concentration are much more suitable for women. Women soldiers serve as the eyes and ears of the Medina as they use high-tech methods to search the land, sea and air for enemy infiltration. So how do we incorporate the unique skills of our women soldiers with the halacha?
Indeed, not one need be sent home. They can fulfill these exact functions, not as soldiers but as civilians on a contractual basis. They would dress in civilian clothing and not undergo basic weapons training.
3. Kashrut would be under the supervision of the army rabbinate and overseen by civilians or military supervisors. The standard would be high-end Mehadrin so that everyone could eat without question.
Any breach of conformity with the halacha would be severely punished.
4. The army rabbinate would be upgraded to include an ordained rabbi in every fighting unit – serving as one of the fighting troops and utilizing his rabbinic specialty only at times of need.
5. The army would consist of only observant men – the more erudite the better. The Gemara (Kedushim 76b) relates that the fighting troops of King David were the nation’s most outstanding young men – without physical or spiritual blemish, because victory is dependent on the spiritual merits of the fighters.
Of course, there are many more areas which would testify to the Torah’s presence in our army.
When the Mashiach reveals himself, the present yeshiva students will don the uniforms of our special forces and their seats in the bet midrash will be occupied by those who are presently uninformed of Torah and Halacha.

Shabbat Shalom,
Nachman Kahana
