“Michoel: The Vilna Gaon tried to make Aliyah in 1782-1783 because he calculated that the 2nd hour of daylight of the 6th day of Creation when G'd gathered a lump of mud/clay on the Temple Mt to create Adam corresponded with equally divided hours between 1741 (5501) and 2240 (6000). Divide that 500 yr period by 12, and one sees that the 2nd hour began in 1782 or 1783 when the Gaon attempted Aliyah. He turned back at least in part because his beloved wife died as he was journeying toward E. Yisrael through Prussia. He later sent his students to come after his death. This calculation is discussed in detail in Sefer Kol HaTor. He passed away in 1797. So yes, his students did come around 1808. ME: It took time to collect funds and make the plans without that guidance from the Gaon, i.e. that settlement is called Ayelet Hashar. There may be other reasons, but i dont know. However this settlement is beautifully written about in “Her Children Return” (2 vol) by V. littman (with copius sources), beginning on page 45 - 49, explaining the first attempt (of 70 people) took almost a year. Rav Menachem Mendel Shklov was sent ahead to prepare for their arrival. After many difficulties, they reached Tzfas on 8 Elul 5569.
