With fire she [Jerusalem] was destroyed and with fire she will be rebuilt. The very fire that consumes our bodies will one day rebuild the Jewish People.”

After some urging, Rab Elchonon acquiesced, and the chilling shiur was delivered. It is possible that during this shiur he uttered the famous words [above] attributed to his final moments.”

This was a very stirring article about the discovery of a letter (Vilniaus Nelaras) from 77 years ago (December 1940), containing a picture of Rav Elchonon with the issue of a temporary passport issued in Vilna for Rav Elchonon Wasserman Hy”d. The fact that he was so aware of exactly what was transpiring and knew the fate of the Jews at that time, but would not abandon his students. 

And on the same afternoon, I read the following, with certain parts standing out.

And also this: "these brave young men and their families are the Maccabim of today” could also be Meir Ettinger and the young hilltop men and their families.

Therefore, before the war or after the war or together with the war, I am not sure when, we are going to have a heavenly visitor in the shape of a mini solar system that Hashem is sending to destroy the evil. Tzipi Hotovely, We Love You, Israel Loves You

The Letters Section of the Jerusalem Post edition today, 11.27.2017 is flooded with support for you, Tipi Hotovely, because they know you have a heart of gold, the Gold of Yerushalyim and Eretz Yisrael. These Letter Writers also see falicious fabrications, lies, innuendo, misrepresentation, and slander, when they see it. They are truthful just as you are insightful.

The first act by the Prime Minister is to protect his ministers acting for the honor of Israel. But this Prime Minister doesn’t know where to put his allegiance. This Prime Minister is swayed (bribed) by the funds (payoff) that are supposedly coming from the open Jewish Federations and other Agencies (of Reformers) who as the Chief Rabbi of Israel has noted:


In an interview with Arutz Sheva, Rabbi David Lau said that, in 1945, American Jewry numbered six million Jews: "There was no Holocaust there, thank God, there were no terrible wars that took many Jewish lives, and there was not substantial immigration to Israel. Today, American Jewry numbers less: Five million Jews, including 700,000 Israelis.”

"This means," explained the Chief Rabbi, "that American Jewry, instead of naturally increasing, is diminishing."

According to the Pew Institute, about 50 percent of American Jews are secular - "not Reform, not Conservative, and not Orthodox, but secular. So to automatically generalize and say that 90 percent of them are Reform is simply untrue,” he said.

He suggested "looking the facts in the eye - to see the growth of the Orthodox community which, by the way, I would be happy to see grow up here in Israel and not there. You have to look at the data and open your eyes.”

Anatomy of a Smear

It would be edifying if Israelis truly understood what is happening in American Jewish life and paid less attention to the instigators of insincere indignation, such as those who smeared Hotovely. Netanyahu should have supported her.

As if on order, no sooner had I written “Life with a Smear” when we were presented with a real life example of a smear – a deliberate and conscious attempt to manipulate and distort the words of a public figure in order to shame her, force an apology, get her fired and ruin her life and career – all for the purpose of gaining some petty, partisan, political advantage.

The other day, Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely purported to “disrespect” and “outrage” “all of American Jewry” (these are actual quotes from her critics) by articulating basic truths of which all American Jews are aware. Asked why there is a disconnect these days between much of American Jewry and Israel on diplomatic issues, and how such matters as the “Kotel” controversy have angered such a large part of American Jewry, she answered that Israel is the homeland of all Jews, “of all streams,” and every Jew should come live here and thereby influence Israeli society. 

But, she added, most American Jews are “not understanding the complexities of the region,” as they are –and here are the phrases that allegedly ticked off the self-appointed leaders of branches of American Jewry that are in such a steep decline – “people that never send their children to fight for their country, most of the Jews don’t have children serving as soldiers, going to the Marines, going to Afghanistan, going to Iraq. Most of them have quite comfortable lives. They don’t know how it feels to be attacked by rockets.”

If we parse her words fairly and objectively, it is clear that her sentiments are true and indisputable. Most American Jews do not have children serving as soldiers, Marines, in Afghanistan or Iraq. That is obvious, and I would speculate that most American Jews don’t even know someone who serves in the American military or served in Iraq or Afghanistan. (I do – a young former congregant was a Marine who fought during some of the harshest combat in Fallujah, Iraq, and I was proud to officiate at his wedding at which he wore his full dress uniform, replete with sword, and of course a good number of chaplains.) But most don’t, and that is true today of most Americans.

This is not because American Jews are selfish, uncaring, unpatriotic or disloyal. In truth, we are underrepresented in the American military according to our percentage of the population, but that has to do mostly with the underrepresentation of particular socio-economic brackets in the American military and the underrepresentation in the military of sections of the country where most Jews live. The higher socio-economic bracket to which one belongs and the more liberal the area of the country in which one lives, we find the lower the rate of participation in the military. This is true for Jews and non-Jews. We can quibble whether this should be so but not whether it is so. It is, and so it has been since the United States abolished the draft 45 years ago. (Parenthetically, only 25 % of the current members of Congress have served in the military, compared to close to 80% of the congressmen in the 1970’s.)

What Tzipi Hotovely said is absolutely true.

But this is how a smear works: Rick Jacobs, the leader of Reform Judaism who has become an open foe of a strong, proud, traditional Israel, castigated her for being “ignorant and ill-informed,” because, as he said, “my father served with distinction” in the American army. Indeed – we honor his father’s service! – but she did not say that Jews have never served in the American military (“never send” is not the same as “never sent,” and even that phrase was clarified), but rather that most Jews “don’t” serve in the American military. Note the verbal legerdemain – pretending her remarks were a blanket statement about the past rather than a comment on the present. That is rank dishonesty, and he should be ashamed of himself for engaging in it.

The point is not whether his father served or even whether he served (I assume he didn’t; he and I both came of age after the United States switched to an all-voluntary military). When there was a draft, Jews were drafted and served like any other citizen; American Jews fought in World War II in a greater proportion than our share of the population. I’ve walked the grounds of the American military cemetery at Normandy. The Stars of David that mark the graves of the dead American-Jewish soldiers stand out, if only because the thousands of crosses are arranged so neatly. But they are there, in almost every row. She was speaking about current events, how most American Jews today are detached from a military life, and how that surely taints their views on Israel where fighting in the military in an existential conflict that will not end is part of life and the expectation of almost every teenager. And she is correct – so correct that I would be curious to learn how many of her critics, or her critics’ children, have fought in the American military.

Here’s another shameful smear: the accusation that she was disrespecting all those young American Jews who go to Israel and enlist in the IDF. Again – smear. Distortion. Misrepresentation. Lie. And this is how it works – did she mention lone soldiers? Did she mention the IDF? Of course not. Look at both her words and the context. In our community, many dozens of youngsters over the years have enlisted in the IDF, and we are proud of all them. But have any of them fought in Afghanistan or Iraq? Not to my knowledge… So this is a blatant effort to willfully distort her words. She made no reference to the IDF – so how can she be accused of disrespecting those who fight in the IDF? But this is how the smear game works – more verbal sleight-of-hand – denouncing someone for what was said and is true by attributing to them things that were not said and are false.

The officialdom of the heterodox movements is uncomfortable, even resentful, of a successful woman who is proudly Jewish, proudly religious, proudly traditional, proudly Israeli and proudly right-wing.

There are two real problems at play here, and Minister Hotovely is responsible for neither of them. The officialdom of the heterodox movements is uncomfortable, even resentful, of a successful woman who is proudly Jewish, proudly religious, proudly traditional, proudly Israeli and proudly right-wing. She undermines several of their persistent narratives about Orthodoxy and traditional life in Israel. Seeing the Deputy Foreign Minister of Israel wearing a shaitel must gall them. Too bad – for them.

And the bigger problem is this: with the heterodox movements in a free fall, both in terms of raw numbers as well as influence in American politics because of the persistent liberal bias. They need to periodically – these days, it’s every few weeks – find a scapegoat, an accusation, an insult or a cause to get their people riled up. It can be the Haredim to whom they attribute all sorts of mischief and ill-will. It can be the Kotel, where suddenly – literally, suddenly, after many decades – the status quo of exclusively traditional prayer bothers them. It is as if they woke up one day and realized – or contrived – that the status quo must bother them. It can be the non-acceptance of their conversions, their rabbis, or their modes of worship in one form or another. It can be the growth of the settlements or a forceful response to Arab terror or Gazan rockets. But it is always something.

That is why even an apology from Tzipi Hotovely, which she proffered because that is the way the smear game is played (and shame on the Prime Minister for not standing behind her), will not suffice for the complainants. They want her and her kind out! It is not her but what she stands for that irritates them. She is a constant reminder of what they too could have – with their children and grandchildren – if only they would return to the honest study of Torah and the true observance of mitzvot. That is why they seem to be perpetually aggrieved and always cross about something going on in Israel.

When many Israelis speak of “American Jewry,” they conjure to themselves a benign image of Jews who proudly love and support Israel, feel a deep emotional bond, and constitute a solid bloc of the type of encouragement and cooperation that one can expect from family. Would that it were so – but those days are long gone, sadly. Most American Jews today are unaffiliated – they do not identify as Orthodox, Reform or Conservative. They don’t feel that bond with Israel that their parents and certainly their grandparents did, most by far have never even visited Israel, and the ranks of American Jewry (including the heterodox movements) have been decimated by intermarriage that has obviously sapped their identification with Jews and the Jewish State. And the heterodox movements are permeated with Western ideas and values that occasionally conflate with Jewish ideas and values, but not always, and they can by and large no longer tell the difference.

The cause of Israel struggles today on college campuses because too many young Jews are cut off from their Jewish identity. The more the Jew is disengaged from Judaism, Torah, mitzvot and Jewish values, the more he or she will be disengaged from Israel. It is a tragic but accurate formula – that is why Minister Hotovely was banned by a “Jewish” group from speaking at Princeton – but there is little that Israel can do to reverse that trend. Identification and support for Israel will result from an enhanced sense of Jewish identity but those young Jews who are estranged from Israel have already embedded another identity and set of values and priorities. That is what has to be reversed and at this the heterodox movements are ill-equipped as they have long fostered an alienation from Torah.

That is why they force themselves to be outraged, manufacture slights and insults, and are avid players of the “Gotcha Game,” in which they monitor every single word of their targets in order to find the one word that they can wrench from context, cast in the most negative light or otherwise twist and falsify – all so that they can show relevance to their dwindling flock and their fellow travelers in the secular media. This is the smear game in action.

It would be edifying if Israelis truly understood what is happening in American Jewish life, paid less attention to the instigators of insincere indignation, and more attention to those Jews whose Jewish children and grandchildren will be building Torah, supporting Israel, making aliya and preserving the future of the Jewish people. And, of course, it would be an absolute delight if all Jews – of every stripe and background – did the same, and in so doing brought the era of redemption closer.

Israeli Blogger Holds Tefillin In Saudi Arabian Mosque

YWN:  Photos taken by Ben Tzion, a 31-year-old Israeli blogger, show him inside the ‘Mosque of the Prophet’ in Medina, Islam’s second holiest site. The images, which the photographer has claimed are peaceful, have created a backlash of angry internet posts throughout the Muslim Middle-East, mainly from Qataris and Palestinians.

Ben Tzion, who was born in Russia, is posing with his Tefillin bag in the mosque, with his name inscribed on the bag in Hebrew lettering. The pictures came from inside the Saudi mosque where the ‘Prophet Mohammed’ is buried.

Tzion posted the images with the caption: “Jewish and Arab people share common history and blood lineage to Abraham/Ibrahim. With love and mutual respect, peace would come to the entire Middle East region.”



Tzion has recently been traveling to visit Muslim holy sites across the world and so far has been to places as far-flung as Tehran, Qom, Beirut and Riyadh. These places are all incredibly difficult for an Israeli to reach, while many are outright illegal. Tzion claims his trip is one of peace and is a private trip, but many have seen it as a sign of warming relations between the Saudis and Israel.

To add more to the oddity of the situation, Tzion told Israeli reporters that he lets people know that he is Israeli and that he has never been approached with any hostility. “They did know I’m an Israeli and that I also have other passports and that Jews are accepted in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

While on the ground things may have been amicable, online it was a different story. The backlash has been vociferous. A Twitter hashtag was created in Arabic which translates to: “A_Zionist_In_the_Prophet’s_Mosque.” It refers to Ben Tzion’s trip and has been used almost 100,000 times with people voicing their outrage.

Parshas Vayeitzei – Real People Cry and Laugh

REAL PEOPLE CRY AND LAUGH

“Then Yaakov … raised his voice and wept.” (Beraishis 29:11)

This is high drama. These are real people! They cry. They laugh. As it says, “Avraham threw himself upon his face and laughed.” (Beraishis 17:17)

In this week’s parsha, Yaakov Avinu travels alone to Haran. He is going to found the Nation of Israel. This is a central event in the history of the world.  On the road, Yaakov “encounters” Hashem in a dream. In Haran, the founders of the tribes of Israel are born. What do we know about this unique family? 

I have often mentioned my late father’s reputation for integrity, unusual in the world of big business. He was raised in a secular home, yet honesty was woven into his being. My mother a”h was the same way. It was impossible for either of them to deviate from the truth. That is rare in this “olam ha sheker.” They inherited this from their Jewish forefathers and mothers. 

“Derech eretz preceded Torah by twenty six generations.” (Vayikra Rabbah 9:3) Before you can fulfill the Torah you have to be a baal derech eretz. You can’t learn the sugya of “v’ahavta l’raiecha k’mocha … you shall love your friend as [you love] yourself” (Vayikra 19:18) and then push someone out of your way. No, we are learning Torah to transform ourselves. 

There must be an innate sense of humility. One has to understand how to subordinate oneself to Hashem. That humility also manifests itself in relations with other people. “Who is destined for a share in the World to Come? One who is modest and humble, who enters bowing and leaves bowing, who learns Torah constantly, but doesn’t take credit for himself.” (Sanhedrin 88b)

Here, at the birth of the Shvatim, we see the difference between baalei derech eretz and those whose character traits make it impossible to keep the Torah. Yaakov is an “ish taam.” (Beraishis 25:27). The distinction between him and Lavan is totally clear. Yaakov is by nature incapable of lying; Lavan is by nature incapable of telling the truth. 

Every day we say, “Baruch sh’amar … Blessed is He Who speaks and does.” Hashem’s actions are always in accord with His words. This is for us to imitate. The honest man does what he says he will do. We begin Rosh Hashanah with “Hataras Nedarim” and Yom Kippur with “Kol Nidre.” Doesn’t this tell you something about matching words with actions? The year cannot begin until we understand that we have to be straight, honest, yashar.

Malachim have a similar quality. We can learn from the angels, who “accept upon themselves the yoke of heavenly sovereignty from one to another and grant permission to one another to sanctify the One Who formed them.” (Shacharis) There is no jealousy among them. 

Our avoda is to refine our nature so that we can become like the angels, the Avos and Imahos. In order to accomplish this, Hashem breathed into us a neshoma which is able to apply Torah concepts to our behavior, so that we can train ourselves to imitate Avraham rather than Lot, Yitzchak rather than Yishmael, Yaakov rather than Esav, Moshe Rabbeinu rather than Korach. 

Last week, I mentioned a news story about the admission of a robot to citizenship in a certain country. I was trying to understand why I felt so strongly that this is a catastrophic sign for our generation, and then it suddenly became clear. A technician is soldering wires together, creating this robot in a laboratory. The robot can do many things I can do and maybe better. It has a face. It can move and talk. Yes, it needs to be recharged periodically, but, then again, so do I! 

What is the problem with this robot? Why is it not human? 

Because a person made it! And Who made us?

“My G-d, the neshoma You placed within me is pure. You created it. You fashioned it. You breathed it into me. You safeguard it within me, and eventually You will take it from me …. Blessed are You, Hashem, Who restores souls to dead bodies.” (Daily Tefillah)

A person can cry. A person can laugh. “Al naharos Bavel … By the rivers of Bavel, there we sat and also wept when we remembered Tzion.” (Tehillim 137) Because we can look at the world with eyes of Torah, we can feel the catastrophe when we are in Golus. We are filled with simcha when we anticipate the Geula Shelemah. A man did not create us; Hashem created us. 

Can you imagine the chutzpa to equate a robot with a human being? The technician thinks he is G-d. Paro also thought he was G-d. The direct result of Paro’s cosmic delusion was the destruction of Mitzraim. That is what happens when a man thinks he is Hashem. “Their idols are silver and gold, the handiwork of man … Those who make them should become like them, whoever trusts in them.” (Tehillim 115) 

The point at which we equate the neshoma with electrical circuits is the point at which our claim to the right to live in this world comes into question. In Gan Eden, Chava made cheshbonos. Maybe she could also “create,” or, at least, change the rules a little. Because of her “slight misunderstanding,” death, disease and tzouris entered the world. Every tzouris we have today is because, at the beginning of history, mankind wanted to compete with Hashem. 

Robots have no heart. “Hakodesh Baruch Hu liba bo’ay … Hashem desires the heart.” (Sanhedrin 106b) We first place the tefillin next to the heart, then the brain, then the hand. The path to proper behavior begins with the heart. “V’ahavta  … You shall love Hashem with all your heart ….” The heart is the fountain of tears and laughter. 

“In the evening one lies down weeping, but with dawn … a cry of joy!” (Tehillim 30)

Reports state that Prime Minister Netanyahu is searching for a legal way to fire Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely.

Hotovely said earlier in an interview that "American Jews live comfortably and don't understand Israeli reality.”

Her words are being interpreted incorrectly; it is based on her experience speaking to the Jewish College Students in her recent visit to America. The Leftists are smearing her unfairly and inaccurately! She was NOT speaking about the ‘organized American community leaders’. She was speaking to the disenfranchised (from their Jewish Judaic Heritage) American Jewish students

Today in the JPost edition the leftists brought out the guns on Hotovely. Because she is religious, not a politician and doesn’t try to play-up-to political entities, she is being thrown to the wolves of Israeli political machinations. What she said was true, the Reform and Conservative on the whole do not make Aliyah and are comfortable in the freedoms of America. The Religious Jews do make Aliyah in record numbers. This whole fiasco against Hotovely is directed by the Reform and Conservative and anti-religious of Israel.

Combine dry ingredients

Cream shortening and sugar in Mixer

add one egg at a time

add remaining liquid ingredients

add dry ingredients and mix till smooth

pour batter into greased donut pan,

למרות המתח והלחץ מכל מיני כיוונים, ליהודים בארץ ישראל אין מה לפחד מאף אחד. מוצאים מנהרה בשטח ישראל - לפוצץ אותה! ולא לחשוב מה יגידו, 'ונשמרתם מאוד לנפשותיכם'. כתוב בתורה 'הבא להרגך השכם להורגו'. מטרת החמאס והפלסטינים, להגיע לבסיס צבאי ולחטוף חס ושלום, חיילי צה״ל.

Anniversary Of A Night Of Infamy

Exactly seventy-nine years ago, on the evening of November 9, 1938, an orgy of hate-fueled violence broke out across what had been a progressive cultured country: Germany. The two-day pogrom was a spree of vandalizing, looting, beating, and killing. It would come to be known as Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.

Kristallnacht was not a random violent event. It was carefully orchestrated by the Nazi regime, whose goal was to humiliate and intimidate the German Jewish population throughout the country. Hundreds of disparate gangs, lead by SA stormtroopers and goaded by Nazi leadership, particularly propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, launched simultaneous attacks all over Germany.

The country had elected Adolf Hitler to power five years earlier. Prior to Hitler’s Nazi Party, the German Weimar Republic was a liberal country, where freethinking, science, music and literature flourished. But an economic downturn opened the door for a megalomaniac to seize control. And the maniac had a sadistic agenda: he blamed Germany’s Jews, a tiny minority, for every trouble, and he was determined to create a culture of hate, and to get rid of them.

When the violence was over, dozens lay dead among the shards. The Night of Broken Glass saw seven thousand Jewish businesses targeted, their broken windows littering the streets, two hundred and fifty synagogues burned, and Jewish hospitals, schools, and homes invaded and looted. The following morning, thirty thousand Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps.

In the ensuing days the Nazi regime swiftly stepped up the persecution. Jews were forbidden from attending school, from owning businesses, and were subject to curfews. The Reich even confiscated the insurance monies owed to Jewish business owners whose stores had been vandalized during the pogrom.

Kristallnacht marked a turning point for the more than half million German Jews. The Nazis had been making life miserable for years, but the Night of Broken Glass was the beginning of real terror.

My grandmother’s family, who lived in the city of Chemnitz in eastern Germany, had fled the Nazi state several years before Kristallnacht. My grandmother was only eleven when her father had a prescient dream that the Nazis were coming for him. He woke up one morning in March 1933, packed a small satchel, and fled the country, leaving his wife, three young children, and a prosperous business behind.

When the SA stormtroopers arrived, which, shockingly, they did, the following day, he was already gone. The rest of the family was placed under house arrest. Even as a Nazi stormtrooper guarded their front door, my great-grandmother shepherded her young children out the back door. They walked to the train station, each child alone, and boarded a train for Holland, escaping Nazi Germany, never to return. A prescient dream and the astonishing courage to leave Germany in a heartbeat saved my family from almost certain death.

After Kristallnacht, the plight of Jewish people went from bad to critical. And my family was not in the clear. They were still in Europe. From Holland they eventually relocated to Belgium, trying to stay one step ahead of disaster. But in May 1940 Hitler occupied Belgium as well, and at that point there was nowhere to go, no country whose borders were open to Jewish refugees.

In my new book, Among the Reeds: The true story of how a family survived the Holocaust, I recount the way my grandparents made it through WWII in Europe, even saving their young children, including my father who was a newborn when the war came to Belgium. If not for my grandparents’ courage, determination, and willingness to make unbelievably difficult decisions, I would not be here to tell the story.

As we mark the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, let us pause and remember what happened when a country known for its culture and freethinking slipped into a period of hate and xenophobia, when it allowed a madman to take the reigns. Let us consider the terrifying parallels of the current American administration. A divided country. A narcissistic leader who encourages more division, who points fingers at certain groups, blaming them for the country’s problems. Let us contemplate the shock of seeing hate groups marching in American streets.

On November 9, the anniversary of an infamous night of terror, let us vow, never again.
