BEWARE: CHINA’s ECONOMIC WAR, TECHNOLOGY, and INTERFERENCE WITH CREATION

*Beware of China’s Technological Interference with Creation of the World and the Future of the World

BeiDou Navigation Satellite System

China is taking its rivalry with the U.S. to the heavens, spending at least $9 billion to build a celestial navigation system and cut its dependence on the American-owned GPS amid heightening tensions between the two countries. bloombergquint

Beidou is one element of China’s ambitious campaign to displace Western dominance in aerospace. A state-owned company is developing planes to replace those from Airbus SE and Boeing Co., and domestic startups are building rockets to challenge the commercial-launch businesses of Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin.

China started developing Beidou in the 1990s and will spend an estimated $8.98 billion to $10.6 billion on it by 2020, according to a 2017 analysis by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. The system eventually will provide positioning accuracies of 1 meter (3 feet) or less with use of a ground support system. wikipedia

China’s Artificial Moon
Chinese city 'plans to launch artificial moon to replace streetlights’ The south-western Chinese city plans to launch an illumination satellite in 2020. According to an account in the People’s Daily, the artificial moon is “designed to complement the moon at night”, though it would be eight times as bright. the guardian

China Creates Genetically Edited Babies, scientists condemn 'monstrous’ experiment. iol.co.za Dr He Jiankui said he made twins incapable of being infected by HIV by disabling the CCR5 gene that allows the deadly virus to get into human cells. "Dr He said 16 out of 22 embryos were edited, and 11 were used in six IVF attempts before a woman became pregnant with her twins"

He claims to have done this in two girls, named Nana and Lulu, who were born in China a few weeks ago, although the research has not been published or independently verified. Doing this in living babies is illegal in many countries, including the UK, where scientists and ethicists accused the researcher of "highly irresponsible, unethical and dangerous" science, akin to "genetic Russian roulette”. People without the CCR5 gene may be protected from HIV but are at greater risk from other viruses, including hepatitis B and West Nile virus, as well as dying of flu.

Why Geneticists say it’s Wrong to Edit the DNA of Embryos to Protect them Against HIV
latimes (as read at JPost Sunday edition). Read full article to understand in depth:

News of He’s experiment set geneticists abuzz at a time of vigorous debate over when, where and for what gene-editing should be used in humans.

Last year, scientists at Oregon Health and Science University reported the use of gene-editing techniques to rid embryos of familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart disorder that can cause premature death. Critics grumbled that editing embryonic DNA was overkill when safer means of preventing the hereditary disorder already exist. In any event, the gene-edited embryos were never implanted in a woman’s uterus.

Soon after, a panel of the American Society of Human Genetics and members of 10 organizations from across the globe recommended against genome editing that culminates in human pregnancy until such techniques were studied and debated further. [. . .]

What could come next for the field if these twins have actually been born?

If they’re normal and everything’s fine, it’s all good, I guess. In-vitro fertilization was certainly very controversial decades ago and now is used routinely. For these kids’ sake, we all hope there won’t be any issues, of course. But if there are off-target effects because something else was altered in their DNA, it will actually backfire and cause quite a bit of harm to the field.

There’s no question that these gene-editing techniques will be used in the future, but it just wasn’t necessary to try them now, in embryos.
